Does Billy Cobham still play drums professionally..?

I think he is the only one that can match Lopez's diversity and skill. This is a horrible moment in music history...

Now I think that Nick Barker would be a good candidate for the band's next drummer. While is is way to fast for them, he could easily play slower. He's also extremely creative and comes up with some incredible parts to listen to. I'd love it if he joined up with the band. He potentially could I think, seeing as how he's not in Dimmu Borgir anymore and he's not doing any side projects to my knowledge.

Deth 05-12-2006 08:26 PM

Sean Reinhart would be good, but it would never happen.

They need a jazzy/ethnic drummer.

Insipid2000 05-12-2006 08:28 PM

How come there are so many martins in opeth Martin Lopez, Martin Mendez and Martin Axenrot? must be just a coincedence.

Deth 05-12-2006 08:31 PM

Mikeal has a fetish for Martins.

BurningSky 05-12-2006 08:39 PM

Well, the decision so far is Axe, which is a standard metal drummer...

We can all hope for a jazzy drummer though; it would fit Opeth so much better, especially with this new direction...

Barker would be a horrible fit, I think. He's fast as hell, and has some great drumlines, but his drums and Opeth would have a godawful clash. They're completely different.

On the plus side, Lopez is doing a side project? That should rule.

Kreator2112 05-12-2006 10:20 PM

travis barker would be a much better drummer.

PeEpHoLe_10 05-12-2006 11:47 PM

Im soo ****ing gutted about Lopez.:upset:

Killtacular 05-13-2006 12:15 AM

If he would fit the style, then why are you complaining?

Deliverance. Best mellow drum parts EVAR.

Don't think it counts as a side project if you don't have a main band for it to be on the side of...
:(

TakeWarning 05-13-2006 03:28 AM

Damn that sucks, he was an amazing drummer, especially on Damnation.

JamJar 05-13-2006 03:42 AM

Lopez was a great drummer and was perfect in Opeth. They will never be the same again. :upset:

Prince of Darkness 05-13-2006 03:56 AM

hmm. That's some bad news right there.

Thor 05-13-2006 09:58 AM

Well I remember a few days back we were complaining that we had nothing new to talk about, and unfortunately we do now. :upset:

I don't think the band will ever fully recover from this.

Killtacular 05-13-2006 12:12 PM

Better buy Still Life and love it now, kiddies. They'll never make anything like it ever again.

Hell, same for Damnation. And Deliverance.

JamJar 05-13-2006 12:19 PM

I've never really heard Axenrot play. Is he more of a death metal drummer? If so, we could see another MAYH -esque album.

Thor 05-13-2006 12:26 PM

You can add BWP to that list, also.

I can see them making another album like MAYH, though.

I'm sad about Martin's departure from the band :upset:

I hope "Axe" mantain the same level as Lopez did.

I've never even heard of this Axe guy until this. What has he done, or is he brand new?

Txus 05-13-2006 12:39 PM

I think he's one of the most talented Drummers in the swedish metal scene. He is the drummer from Bloodbath.

Thor 05-13-2006 12:42 PM
I think he's one of the most talented Drummers in the swedish metal scene. He is the drummer from Bloodbath.
Well that would make sense that he's in the band, Akerfeldt's connection with Bloodbath and all.

Well if he's a talented death metal drummer then I don't think I can complain as much as I was. I still don't think he can fill Lopez's spot, but it will be interesting to see where the band goes. I won't write off the band for the sole fact that Lopez is gone, but I'll still be pretty critical. I bet Axe knows that people will be skeptical and will listen to him with critical ears because so many people loved Martin.

I would only write off Opeth if Mikael left, but that would never happen because he writes just about everything for the band. I shudder the thought of him leaving.

Txus 05-13-2006 12:46 PM

If Mikael leaves opeth I would take a plane to sweden and castrate him.....:p

But on a seriouse note, I think Axe will handle all the pressure because in my eyes he is an excellent drummer.

NP: Opeth - Closure

Mikael will never leave Opeth. If he ever did leave the band I'm sure that they wouldn't continue on without him.

If you did that, his growl wouldn't be as deep and therefore he would be a useless human being.

 He could then play some Power Metal......

Pretty true. Mikael's growls are the best that I've ever heard.

Moses 05-13-2006 12:53 PM

Eww just imagine Cedric Bixler singing for Opeth.

Though Theodore would be a good replacement for Martin.

Thor 05-13-2006 12:55 PM

That's wrong, just plain wrong. Even though I'm a fan of The Mars Volta, that just wouldn't fit at all. Opeth cannot have another singer besides Mikael.

Txus 05-13-2006 12:59 PM

Yeah, Mikael is perfect in the band. I think Theodore wouldn't fit in here also even though he is an excellent drummer. Sean Reinert should play with opeth..but that's not likely to happen :(

Thor 05-13-2006 01:01 PM

My dream drummer for Opeth (besides Martin, of course) would be Nicholas Barker, even though I've already said that. He easily has the speed and chops for their death metal songs and has a vast amount of creativity for their slower parts like on the Damnation album.

Txus 05-13-2006 01:05 PM

I think Gene Hoglan would make an excellent Opeth drummer. But that's just a dream.

That's what he would sound like if he was casterated.

Howerever, I stand by my statement that Jon Theodore would be a good drummer for Opeth. Pretty much anyone with a great latin feel would do fine.

He would do a good job with the latin parts easily, but you also need a good drummer who can lay down some fast death metal beats, too. And that's why Martin Lopez was so perfect for Opeth.

Moses 05-13-2006 01:15 PM

The death metal beats weren't even remotely fast. I could hardly imagine Theodore struggling with that at all.

John Freese would be excellent.

Most of them weren't, but sometimes it's a little tough to find a drummer with matching creativity and speed. I was thinking of the song "Wreath" at the time, which does have some pretty speedy stuff in it.

Trivium616 05-13-2006 04:01 PM

Man, I can't believe Lopez left. Opeth just isn't going to be the same anymore. But I guess this Axe guy will do just fine on the next album.

Stoo 05-13-2006 04:15 PM

Hmm.
All axe has been doing is reproducing Lopez' work. You can't really have any idea what the next albums going to be like drum-wise.
