Yeah, Gothenburg metal hit and used the harmony riff thing to death. They weren't progressive, but bands like Dark Tranquillity were writing similar riffs so Mikeal took the band in a different direction.

Ironic that DT are opening for Opeth now.
Just goes to show that if you do something different, and do it well, you'll succeed above your peers.

Opeth are friends with some of the Gothenburg bands anyway, In Flames, as well, for example. I'd imagine they still listen to some of that sort of stuff but just didn't want to take their music in that direction anymore.

I don't really see too much similarity at all between old school Opeth and old school In Flames, but I'm not much of metal conneisseur (spelled wrong) anyway.

I didn't say there was a huge simularity. There is quite some simularity mind you, they both played melodic, classical sounding metal with harmonised guitars, death vocals and acoustics thrown in, both even experimented with string-like sounds in their music. I said they were peers, meaning they were "extreme" metal bands from around the same time and a similar area.

The last track on Orchid there is a song, can't remember what it is called but It almost sounds live... It's so unclear on what the song is. Can someone help me on this?

The last track on Orchid is Apostle in Triumph, unless you're talking about the bonus track on the reissues which is Into the Frost of Winter.

The Apostle In Triumph?

I'm Charming 01-27-2006 04:23 PM

I dl and watched Lametations DVD last night.

Wow.

It's simpily amazing.

It's the best live show I've seen live or on DVD.

bball_1523 01-27-2006 05:39 PM

this is amazing! Opeth is going to have an "evening with" show at the Los Angeles show I'm going to. And not only is it "evening with," they are going to play songs from orchid and morningrise!!!!!!!!!!!!! They said rare tracks they've never played. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kaiwaz 01-27-2006 06:14 PM

That would be so awesome to go to, I envy you. I'd love to see them play Black Rose Immortal live, or any song from either album live for that matter.

Tyr 01-27-2006 06:46 PM

I just hope that they will do an 'evening with' here in Stockholm, too. I mean, since they're natives and all. That would be really awesome.

I would be really surprised if they didn't.

Neurotripsicks 01-27-2006 08:55 PM
I usually give every Opeth album a break cause i really don't wanna play any of them out. I can't really pick a favorite but i can pick about 3. My Arms Your Hears, Still Life, then Morningrise. I can't really order them either. Why did they have to make them so damn good?
I absolutely love Still Life. What an amazing album! I think that was their peak album, good luck ever seeing that style again.

Tyr 01-28-2006 08:49 AM
I would be really surprised if they didn't.
Me too, but you never know. I won't celebrate until I'm at the show, otherwise it'll break my heart if they don't do an 'evening with'. Okay, maybe not break my heart, but make me a little sad.

Have I mentioned how ****ing lucky you are for living in Stockholm? :upset:

Do you ever run into any awesome bands?

Toaster 01-28-2006 10:16 AM
One Mikael thing that I want to hear is Crimson by Edge of Sanity: as Dan Swano actually had a large hand in writing the clean vocal melodies on Morningrise (Black Rose Immortal features a lot of Swano-penned melodies and To Bid You Farewell has guest vocals by him during the heavy section I believe), and Mikael apparently does some awesome death screams on that album (which is supposed to be like the greatest death concept album ever anyway), I'd be interested in picking it up.
Swano also worked on Bloodbath's Resurrection Through Carnage (with Akerfeldt on vocals) and Nightmares Made Flesh.

Do you know of anything else worth picking up by Edge of Sanity? I'm interested.

Stoo 01-28-2006 11:19 AM
I second that. Although it's totally a matter of preference.

Yeah so I'm ordering Lamentations from Amazon today \m/
I ordered D & D from amazon yesterday. \m/

Amazon rules for cheap prices on CDs. I got Still Life for 11 bucks including shipping.

OK so what does everyon think of those copies of the original Morningrise? I would like to have a copy of it without the crappy bonus track, but a) I don't know if I want to pay 30 bucks for it and b) you think these are legit? I can't tell myself but I would want to be sure.

Det_Nosnip 01-28-2006 12:57 PM

Is it really that hard to just hit "stop" on your CD player? :p

bucket 01-28-2006 01:03 PM

Jude, I'd like to have the original just as much as you. It is a travesty to mankind to have that bonus track at the end of such a great album. My suggestion is to forget buying it, but instead, burn your reissue onto another CD without including track 6.

Oh, and I'm rather sure the original copy didn't have Opeth's current logo on it. I don't think it even it had their inverted cross logo.

Yes, To Bid You Farewell is a perfect ending to such an epic album, especially how it leaves you on that last final though. ''When every tear I shed, Is for you...'' God I love that, it always gets me misty.

Ventriloquist 01-28-2006 01:23 PM

"Tell me how your heart's in need
As I drown you in the sea"

love this part from deliverence.... i LOVE that song..

Kaiwaz 01-28-2006 01:30 PM

My favorite line from that song is ''Face down beneath the waterline gazing into the deep!'' All this Deliverance talk, I might as well put it in. :)

i think that was one of the first opeth songs i ever heard (downloaded it)

theres no doubt that its a great song, it might be my favourite on morningrise now that i listened to the first 4 songs way too much

Darkness 01-28-2006 01:38 PM

Don't forget on Orchid. After "through the eternal flame..." that horrendous Into The Frost Of Winter breaks out...

Ventriloquist 01-28-2006 01:38 PM

From love to death
In a time span of seconds
Oblivious to regret
Pushed in to belief....

man you pulled my trigger.... writing these lines while listening to it :)

The beggining of the song "Ghost of Perdition" is pretty good imo. when I first bought the album first I though it was an acoustic song. Then Mikael's voice changed my mind: GHOST OF MOTHER LINGERING DEATH!! :)

Pale-Folklore 01-28-2006 01:41 PM
Don't forget on Orchid. After "through the eternal flame..." that horrendous Into The Frost Of Winter breaks out...
I could send whatever you haven't heard, if you wish. But only because you're a fellow Canadain. :)

I would also like some, but I'm not Canadian. :(

Det_Nosnip 01-28-2006 02:40 PM

Well, your country founded his, so I think you're entitled to a song or two. ;)

TojesDolan 01-28-2006 02:47 PM

First Opeth I listened:

Benighted.

Then I knew of "Black Rose Immortal", then I knew of Karma, to Bid you farewell... and something else, I can't remember. It's been downhill from there, honestly.
