I've personally been listening to Ghost Reveries a lot recently. I think it's great. It has a very dark atmosphere and the production is just great. I just don't understand the general bad feelings for the album.

I like Ghost Reveries too... but I just don't feel it's as good as their old stuff.

Otherside 01-26-2006 03:25 PM

I still think Morningrise is my favorite, not sure which ones holds second place...

I used to be really into Morningrise too, then I overlistened it.

I'm always afraid that will happen to albums. It's happened to me with albums like Led Zeppelin IV, etc. :(

Darkness 01-26-2006 04:14 PM

I think I may have done that with Blackwater Park, so now I rarely play it. But when I do, I can get into it, which is good.

Yes!!
I'm seeing Opeth live in NYC on February 23rd, at Town Hall. Fuck yeah!!

Here's the really interesting thing. The NYC show is one of three concerts in the U.S. that are listed as "An Evening With Opeth". There's no opening band, and the setlist is extended to chronologically cover songs from Orchid to Ghost Reveries.

Here's what the Opeth site says about it:
"Chronology MCMXCIV - MMV A live observation by Opeth"
Yes folks, that is the "title" for three exclusive gigs scheduled for NYC's Town hall centre (23/2), Chicago's House of blues (2/3) and LA's Wiltern theatre (14/3). These special seated events will consist of a chronologically played setlist, starting with music from the very first record "Orchid" and ending with vibes from the latest opus "Ghost reveries". These extended sets are exclusive to the three dates and there won't be any support bands on these nights. A good advice is to get your tickets quick as these are bound to sell out fast! Opeth and crew will also bring in extra production and screens in order to try and make this the ultimate Opeth live experience! The band promise a very varied setlist and songs never ever played before live! The setlist boasts no less than 4 songs that never before have been played on American soil and several others that haven't been played for years!
You lucky cocksucker  I really hope they tape those shows for a DVD...or at least someone makes a good bootleg.

Yeah, those sound incredible.

So Flynn, what are hoping to see from Orchid and Morningrise?

Anything from either album would be great. Black Rose Immortal for sure, In Mist She Was Standing, Advent, Under The Weeping Moon, I'd love to see them play Requiem live, one of my favorite intrumentals. Oh yeah, Definately To Bid You Farewell. That would be one emotional live act. :chug:

Ah, I hate that; happens to me ALL THE TIME. I always just put the album away for a while and put it in again after a while. May even sound new! (Well, probably not).

Cain 01-26-2006 08:27 PM

The New York show is already sold out, and it's the one with the extended setlist. :( :( :(

I am BUMMED. I just saw them a few months ago, but come on. That would be just so great.

Were you planning on going?

Not until I noticed that they were doing that today, so I went to the tixxartistarena thingy, just like last time, and discover that the New York show special presale is SOLD OUT. It's like the only one too.

I'm debating sneaking off to Connecticut to see them at the Webster Theatre that Thursday, even though I have class, but reasons against that are as follows:

1.) I love Connecticut, and it's close by, and it's home, but even so the liklihood of me successfully making it there just for a show would be very slim.

2.) My chances of finding another Opeth fan to go with that I'm friends with, though I know a few at home, are nevertheless quite slim, due to college locations and/or high school school night.

3.) No extended setlist, which means no songs from Morningrise or Orchid. :(

Yeah, I put all mine on a huge rotation, so I never listen to the same album more than once in a week.

That sucks about the show Cain, but I thought for some legal reasons they couldn't play anything pre-BWP? How are they doing those extended setlists?

Darkness 01-26-2006 08:41 PM

No no, they just couldn't put them on a DVD.

Oh ok thanks, I was majorly off on that.

Go alone man. I couldn't find anyone to go to Ozzfest 4 with me, so I went alone, met some cool people. I'm glad I went, was one of the best concerts I've ever been to. Why are they only playing that setlist in New York? It must be a DVD recording...which would be awesome when it comes out, if that's true. But it seems odd they'd only play that for one show.

vashts80 01-26-2006 09:14 PM

They're playing two or three shows with the extended setlist (NY, LA and one more I think). We (the people at the official Opeth forums) are hoping that it's recorded for a DVD. The reason why they couldn't release anything pre-BWP on Lamentations was because Music For Nations didn't want to try and get rights to the songs pre-BWP from the various labels that the albums are on, because they felt it was a waste of money or something like that.

Now that Opeth're on Roadrunner, RR is more likely to pick up the rights for the songs that they play if they choose to record one of the "Evening With..." shows for a DVD.

Kaiwaz 01-26-2006 09:16 PM

That would be so awesome, I want more Opeth live in my house. :D

so no dark tranquillity and devildriver? awww

ValeOfShadows 01-27-2006 05:13 AM

What do you guys think is the best Opeth album. I have Ghost Reveries but i want more.

UpperDecker 01-27-2006 06:59 AM

I usually give every Opeth album a break cause i really don't wanna play any of them out. I can't really pick a favorite but i can pick about 3. My Arms Your Hears, Still Life, then Morningrise. I can't really order them either. Why did they have to make them so damn good?

I second that. Although it's totally a matter of preference.

Yeah so I'm ordering Lamentations from Amazon today \m/

Pale-Folklore 01-27-2006 09:50 AM

i was wondering, how do you guys explain the difference between orchid and morningrise, and the later albums?

if this makes any sense, the way i see it is that the first two have more riff/"twin guitar harmony" based songs that don't repeat any riffs, and the rest .. i dont know how to describe the rest, i guess they have more structure.

They realised that tons of bands around their area were making music like what they were doing and decided to change their sound. I mean, they'd been fans of Iron Maiden and such and loved the twin guitar stuff, but apparently Mikael got sick of it after a while. Thus; he let his other influences take over.

He wanted to use the weird chords, the really dissonant, evil sounding stuff because he felt it was more uncharted territory, and not as many other bands dealt with that sort of stuff at the time.

Deth 01-27-2006 10:51 AM

Yeah, Gothenburg metal hit and used the harmony riff thing to death. They weren't progressive, but bands like Dark Tranquillity were writing similar riffs so Mikeal took the band in a different direction.

Ironic that DT are opening for Opeth now.
