I <3 music theory.

I took guitar from 10-12 grade in high school. I loved it. Then the summer before my freshmen year of college I decided to major in music.

eighty d 05-08-2006 07:26 PM
I <3 music theory.
As do I. My favorite class this year, in spite of how horrid I am at sight singing.

It and incredibly imprtant tool. If you can master then you'll be able to audiate a piece of music.

TojesDolan 05-08-2006 07:30 PM

Yeah so I bought Deliverance. Not that I hadn't heard it before, but there was no "My arms your hearse" where my friend bought it for me.

Yeah I talk on topic stuff.
I think I'm gonna major in music production/engineering...I since realized I'm probably not going to be a good enough musician to make a full time career out of it.
I can't decide whether I want to major in that or Education. I have some odd desire to be a teacher, I just think it would be a fun job.

I've been playing guitar for a year now, I started when I was 15. I'd love to make a career out of writing music, but I doubt I'll ever get to that point.

Sorry guys, I'm leaning towards not voting for Lopez in the drummer poll. :(

Deth 05-08-2006 08:07 PM

Same with me, teaching is just appealing for some reason.

I'm not even trying a career in music, I'm too realistic for that.

Crysiss 05-08-2006 08:31 PM

so your going to teach music?

gmoneyguy 05-08-2006 09:15 PM

Whats most appealing about teaching to me, is the fact I'm passing on my passion to kids.

Cardboard Headgear 05-09-2006 12:03 AM

Can't really do much else with a music degree than teach music anyways.

JamJar 05-09-2006 12:39 AM

To all who say that they'd like a career in music: go for it. It you really feel that music is a special thing to you and truthfully you will be dedicated to it and willing to give up your time for it, you should totally go for it.

gmoneyguy 05-09-2006 02:38 AM
Can't really do much else with a music degree than teach music anyways.
Session work, Producer, Sound Engineer, etc

Cardboard Headgear 05-09-2006 02:43 AM

Session work: yes; producer and sound engineer: no. Music theory isn't going to help you work recording equipment :P

gmoneyguy 05-09-2006 02:50 AM
Session work: yes; producer and sound engineer: no. Music theory isn't going to help you work recording equipment :P
Producers need to know how to play every instrument. With the technology used today in recording you need a college degree. (its a music business degree)
I was incorporating all types of music careers.

Cardboard Headgear 05-09-2006 03:19 AM

Ok well generally when someone says 'music degree' they mean they're going to study music itself. I go to school for audio production and recording meself.

Plus, this way, if I ever do feel like writing a record, I'll have connections.
haha good idea
You're lucky that you have some idea of what you want to do, I'm still drifting through school without a major :/
Yeah so I bought Deliverance. Not that I hadn't heard it before, but there was no "My arms your hearse" where my friend bought it for me.

:-|
Well, good for you then :P

That's not a bad trade off though...the Master's Apprentice alone makes it worth it.

Crysiss 05-09-2006 06:54 PM

Deliverance, Wreath and By The Pain I see In others are great songs as well.

Deth 05-09-2006 07:18 PM
so your going to teach music?
Nah, just be a regular teacher. Probably English.

Shattered_Future 05-09-2006 07:48 PM

Teaching gives you the most benefits...my mom used to teach music.

Master's Apprentices and By The Pain I See In Others do the album for me.

Deth 05-09-2006 07:50 PM

Deliverance, Master's Apprentices and A Fair Judgement are among my favorite Opeth songs, but the whole album is strong.

You share my philosophy. MTSU for me, so's I can get me some music production/engineering degree. That 26 on the ACT (do any of you crazy kid's states use that, or are you all about the SAT?) should help me out a bit.

Deth 05-09-2006 08:02 PM

We like the SATs down here. I don't even know the scale for the ACTs.

Killtacular 05-09-2006 08:18 PM

It goes from 0-36. 18 would probably be what the average jock would get (average for my HS). 21 will get you a low paying scholarship paid for by the lottery. 26 and up will get you more money for that scholarship, and possibility for free rides to some skools. 30-36 are fairly rare, and mean you kick more ass than everyone else.

I have no idea how the SAT goes, though.

Ugh, Wreath is a huge snore-fest.:p

That 26 is gonna need to come with some wicked good grades before the free ride offers start coming in.

I have no idea on the SAT either. Especially not since they changed it to a 2400 (?) point scale. I just know I kicked ass on the PSAT.

EDIT: Wreath? Snore-fest? It's such a killer song. I love the production with the atmospheric guitars in the background too.

tr00f. But that goes without saying.

I think you'd need at least a 3.5 for my college of choice. Too bad I have a 3.0.

:upset:

[on topic]I don't really like Wreath too much. It just keeps going and going.[/on topic]

Darkness 05-09-2006 09:38 PM

But the solos... and the brutallity... :upset:

Killtacular 05-09-2006 09:44 PM

Oh, the repetition! Oh, the repetition!!

Darkness 05-09-2006 09:46 PM

Add's to the feeling and power... feeling and power!

Man I have to get use to your new name...

I got a 30. *grins*

gmoneyguy 05-09-2006 11:00 PM

I got a 26 on my ACT and a 1100 on my SAT

What do you guys think of Forest of October

pate 05-09-2006 11:00 PM

I didn't take the SAT.

FoO owns.

TojesDolan 05-10-2006 04:31 AM

[on topic]
I like Deliverance (the album), it's a very solid piece overall and I like all the songs in it (all but key parts, like the beginning to master's apprentices which I find dull, and some parts of A fair judgment and repetitiveness issues with BTPISIO), but it just seems... frigid, compared to say, Still life or my arms, your hearse, in the sense of not being as rich and... colorful, if you'd like to see it that way.

...eh

[school talk]

Stoo 05-10-2006 06:26 AM

I got Damnation!!!!! Finally.

Fuck me, only took since December. After 5 months of waiting for D & D and Amazon claiming not to be able to "source" both these CD's I thought fuck it and bought both of eBay.

Just have to wait for Deliverance now.

7/8!

Np - Windowpane.

Quite frankly it blows. I was thinking, "Who's this n00b copying Scruples' avatar?" ;)

BurningSky 05-10-2006 09:35 AM

I got a 1300 on my SAT on the old scale (650 math, 650 verbal)...

My GPA was 3.1 unweighted (I took all honors and AP classes)...

I got into my first choice college, where I am now completely average compared to everyone else. College is definitely awesome, though. You have to deal with far less stupid people...

Whats the point? It's the older albums that are a bitch to find.

Shattered_Future 05-10-2006 04:27 PM

Moneymaking, my friend. Everybody knows those 3 albums are tons easier to get into. It's all about the moolah.

Darkness 05-10-2006 04:28 PM

I thought Opeth were all about the music... :upset:
