BlackDeathMetalJazz or really ANYTHING else please- 10-17-2004 03:32 PM

agreed :)

Badmoon 10-17-2004 03:32 PM

Syd Barrett is without a doubt a worse guitarist than Jerry, and cannot write for ****, and it would be crazy to even compare there writing abilities, being that Jerry's over powers him by so much.

The Grateful Dead aren't Classic Rock? Is that supposed to be an insult?

I can play pwer chords too. Am I the shiznet?

The Grateful Dead is far less diverse than Floyd.
How? You don't back up anything. Pink Floyd play a Psychedelic progressive sound, The Grateful Dead play much more than one genre.

They might be punk, but they are still considered classic rock

jpj 10-17-2004 03:36 PM

No they're not.

What makes you say that?!?

BlackDeathMetalJazz or really ANYTHING else please- 10-17-2004 03:37 PM

Going from One Of These Days to A Pillow Of Winds to San Tropez to Echoes in one album is pretty diverse...

Badmoon 10-17-2004 03:39 PM

The diversity is high, but it doesn't compare. Give me some huge points of diversity.

keep on phishin' 10-17-2004 03:39 PM

Well they seemed to just play one particular style throughout their whole career.

However the dead played many different genres throughtout their career.

BlackDeathMetalJazz or really ANYTHING else please- 10-17-2004 03:41 PM

American Beauty is an ex.

Badmoon 10-17-2004 03:42 PM

What the hell is that supposed to mean?

I'm going to stay out of the arguement, but why don't you ever give any examples to back up what you say. You just acuse other people or not being able to support what they are saying. (I don't doubt that you have the facts, but use them so you don't seem hypocritical.)

BlackDeathMetalJazz or really ANYTHING else please- 10-17-2004 03:42 PM

Early Dead sucked man

Badmoon 10-17-2004 03:43 PM

No, it's just like early Floyd, but more intelligent. They had a great sense of Folk, and used that all over their music.

keep on phishin' 10-17-2004 03:44 PM

Early Floyd wasn't exactly all that special

Yea but what kind of genre is that? Just because the played the "same genre" doesn't mean that the music does not sound different.

By the way, I smell a good ole' fashioned debate in the mix.

Great, I'd hope someone would ask.

- Possibly the second labeled Psychedelic Band

- First band to use 2 drummers

- First to use 3-D recording, which Pink Floyd would use later in their career

- First to play Bluegrass Rock

- Played Country Rock and Folk.

- Used an unbelieveable amount of classic literature reference in their writing, along with many other diverse writing methods.

- Used such instruments as Banjo, Pedal Steel, Mandolin, ect...That were hardly used before in Rock.

See now you make the argument much more intelligent than "Grateful dead sucks." "No way man Pink Floyd sucks."

And you also won the arguement.

lunch998 10-17-2004 03:56 PM
What makes you say that?!?
Because they are punk. If they were classic rock, they wouldn't be punk. Here, they even call it "classic punk", so you can pretend that the Ramones are half as good as most classic rock bands.

Woodstock 10-17-2004 05:21 PM

Uh oh, a fight. Just about all of that arguement was opinion.

We all change in taste of music. Badmoon just likes anything to do with Jerry Garcia because that is his current taste.

Plus, I know Badmoon was a Floyd fan at some point.

DeusExMachina 10-17-2004 05:26 PM
The diversity is high, but it doesn't compare. Give me some huge points of diversity.
You just admit the diversity is there. So The Dead are more diverse. So what? Metallica is pretty diverse.... doesn't stop them from sucking. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to directly compare Metallica to the Dead, or say that the Dead suck, but diversity doesn't make the band. I mean, the Stones aren't all that diverse, but they totally rock. Ultimately, this whole thing is nothing more than an opinion argument, because the factors that make a band "great" are entirely subjective. You say Garcia is a better writer than Barrett, but some people say the guys from Linkin Park blow both of them out of the water.

Also, didn't mean to single Badmoon out with this little rant, it was just kind of a stream of consciousness.

Woodstock 10-17-2004 05:35 PM

^True, nice to see you back in here.

BludgeonySteve 10-17-2004 06:14 PM

Floyd>The Dead.

Which is why i'm voting for them in the poll.
