Ashford 07-21-2008 09:00 AM

I've been going back 40+ pages and reading all the tips, doing the vocal warm-ups etc but for some reason I still sound flat when I sing. I can hear the notes fine but when I try to reproduce them, I just sound emotionless :/ My vocals sound pretty weak as well and I was thinking a vibrato would help but I haven't been able to sing with one despite all the warm-ups. Anyone with any ideas on how to work on these issues?

Ok so they is my somewhat poor attempt at singing . I was wondering if anyone could give some tips on how to improve myself ?

Dynomiteguy 07-23-2008 08:48 AM

Hey guys, I got a question.
For a year now I've been doing screaming, like the extreme style. I can do it very well, for example I can successfully emulate bands such as Children of Bodom and Opeth.
However, now what boggles my mind is the vocal technique that for example Phil Anselmo of Pantera and James Hetfield of Metallica use (...And Justice for All period). I'm talking when they hit notes like G above middle C with a raspy tone, I can't do that for ****, it goes into my falsetto scream. Note : I have no control over middle voice whatsoever. Is that the culprit?
Thanks in advance. =]

either this is a joke or you accidentally sped up the recording so you sound like a chipmunk, if its not a joke, you might want to try re-recording this

Harmony...how? What is it? How do I do it. -confused.
Harmony...how? What is it? How do I do it. -confused.
If you mean harmonize with another singer....

then a good way to practice is to play a note on an instrument, then play the 3rd up. Now try singing those two notes one after another so you get used to the interval. Now do it without the instruments help.

Now to bump it up a difficulty play the first note, and then sing the second one. The harmony that is created is...you guessed it, a 3rd! A major 3rd is probably easiest to start with.

Eventually this will get easier to do automatically but thats how I got my start on it.

thursdaythrice 08-12-2008 11:53 PM

I sang a couple parts in this little song that i recorded via garage band. I know the instrumentals are very basic and boring but i just wanted something i could attempt to sing to . i am well aware of the lack luster quality I am not a great singer by any means, as you can tell by the recorded clip,. but what can i do to improve on when i sing? im using the built in mic and i had strep throat while recording that (i know, bad time to record me SINGING haha)

www.purevolume.com/mattkurkjian

note erase "http://www.sputnikmusic.com/forums"
the song is called fork and my song 17, altho my song 17 is just auto tuned to ****

you can listin to my instrumental songs too. if you want ....haha

keyboardxmosh 08-23-2008 02:02 AM

dont sing if you have strep throat dude

that cant be good for you

nicolecox 09-04-2008 12:27 PM

Hey guys!

GOme... Harmony can be a very simple thing to use or difficult depending on what types of harmony and melody you are using. As Kid says, the simplest form of using harmony is to sing a major third up from the original melody..... if u play another instrument and have used that you will understand what I mean, and it's sound.

I would advise you to listen to some Beatles songs, especially the earlier stuff as their use of harmony is a really good example to use when starting out with using harmony.... also, harmonies in Blues songs are very good to learn from too. See if you can find some vocal scores along with listening to the music, they may help you too.

kdash 09-25-2008 02:02 PM

in theory, if your adam's apple is low, and u push ur diaphragm down and keep it from coming up then you practice ur high notes, even if u dun't get it, u eventually will? true?

Screamin_Demon_Auz 09-25-2008 03:09 PM

You can't control your diaphragm so never bother trying. All the old school coaches who preach about singing from your diaphragm and all of this emphasis thats placed on it are basically just repeating **** they've heard time and time again and they don't really even know what they mean. You do push down though like your using the restroom, thats the feeling you want to get. Your larynx will always rise somewhat when you sing high and it doesnt really matter unless its so high that your throat starts to close off. If thats the case then do some low larynx work and check on it every once in a while. You'll never really hit high notes properly if your trying to keep the larynx down so just don't think about it unless again its closing off your throat.

kdash 09-26-2008 01:17 PM

is the throat suppose to really feel nothing during high notes?

kdash 10-05-2008 09:06 PM

When Steven Tyler screams in "I don't wanna miss a thing" is it done in falsetto or true voice?

Screamin_Demon_Auz 10-05-2008 11:16 PM

On high notes, you should feel your soft/and or hard palate buzzing a bit if you have correct placement going.

Tyler is in falsetto there. Some people might say its a mix, but really it doesn't matter. It lacking the resonance a head tone would provide.

r0bert 10-11-2008 07:43 PM

K, just made account so i can't make a new thread so sorry if this doesn't belong here.
But what would you guys recommend for a amp for vocal practice?

i'm aware i'll need a P.A. system if i ever want to do more but i've heard of using key board amps and stuff for vocals. I'm looking at this http://raleigh.craigslist.org/ele/856929751.html
which is in my area and 200w for 110 bucks with built in simple EQ.

thanks

kdash 10-17-2008 06:07 PM

How does he do it? It seems when I use falsetto the tone is too sharp, that it is covering up the rasp

Morumbar 11-03-2008 03:11 PM

Okay, so here's the deal: I want to record some vocals (growly thrashy ****). I'm not much of a singer, but I don't have a band, and it's for my solo project-thingy, so I'm gonna do it myself. Which is not really the problem, because I believe I do posess some basic thrashy growl skills.
The problem is however, that I don't want the neighbours to hear me yelling and screaming like a rabid lunatic. XD I need a way to record this **** without mentally disturbing my neighbours. Any suggestions?

Disregard that. Growling is one thing, articulating words while growling is another. Maybe I should just leave this to someone else. XD

mollyringwald 11-20-2008 10:38 AM

hey children! (and elders)

guess whose been singing solo for a couple of years now? i have, and i'm terrible. for whatever reason, i can never really get myself to be in tune with the songs i write, i think i might simply be singing the dominant but i'm in no way sure.

help?

tobius 11-23-2008 06:02 PM

So i recently recorded a short song and decided for the first time ever i would put vocals on it.

It didn't come out as planned and i'm really not happy with my voice at all but can't for the life of me figure what i'm doing wrong and what i need to do to correct it :(

any pointers?

I seem to have having endurance problems because of work. I can't seem to sing songs with high notes consecutively, sometimes i can't even finish one from start to finish, but individually i can hit the notes. Its like after a while my throat wants to quinch up. And when i sing medium pitch songs after a while my voice doesn't seem as bright. Is there any way to improve my endurance.

hiddengirl 01-16-2009 01:01 PM

Im a vocalist, and Im trying to improve my voice. Anyone know of any sites which may help?

Cheers,

It sounds like you're singing out of your range, sing songs with lower notes for a while and if everything clears itself up

Is there any strain when you hit the high notes one-off? If there is, you're doing it wrong and you've got to stop and get your technique right first.

The larynx is a muscle like any other, and you've got to build up endurance. Warm up and warm down before and after singing, do scales across the entirety of your range.

HOW COOL AM I?!

Primergrey 07-17-2009 03:23 AM

I'm a screaming vocalist. I'd like to say that I'm pretty good, but the problem is I have to warm up quite a bit before I can get the sound I desire out of my voice. What are someways I can learn to either a) skip that step entirely, or b) warm up quickly.

Otter, don't be so hard on yourself. You are doing a lot of things right. Nice selective vibrato, nice control, sounds good. You don't stay perfectly on key throughout the song, but I'm sure you do when accompanied.

To make this better I'd suggest a couple of things:

- Less tension at loud volumes, because sometimes it starts to approach a bit of a shout. When I want volume like that, I think about moving the tension from my throat down into my belly (where it becomes "support" instead of tension). The descriptions like "it feels like when you are going to the bathroom" or sneezing or coughing are right on. Try putting a hand on your belly and a hand on your back and coughing to feel the muscles engage.

- More dynamics (loud vs. soft). This is a touching song! Find places to be gentler, like you do at the end of the word at 0:48.

Are there other specific things you believe need improvement?

Romulus 08-10-2009 10:22 PM

So I'm the vocalist of my band and I feel like if I wanna get to the next level from pretty decent to a good solid vocalist I need to improve my overall tone. My range is my strength, but sometimes I can sound just like I'm talking in different pitches. Is there something I can do to help with this, besides practice and repetition?
