ATC is so good. I haven't read any of his stuff since I was Fast Fingers and that is my whole story.
Good one, eh?

Cybergasm 10-20-2005 09:36 PM

So Im criticing a work now, and I started thinking. How much help is it to actually rewrite the verses with what I think should be changed? I then answered: not very. Alot of people, unless really serious (which many here are not), will even bother looking at what was changed to learn from it. So Im offering an alternative to you guys who seem to do alot of what I do (revising): why not highlight what you want changed?

Have a color mean a certain thing, such as akwardness. Then "grade" it like a paper. I would say to change the punctuation and offer variations to flow or even how to re-define there flow. All this as well as if you have an idea for some good imagery to use. Overall I think this method would be more beneficial to the artist. Especially if they re-write, they will have to engage themselves more.

EDIT:

HOLY CRAP. I Just wrote a critic that was actually more then the character limit allowed...

Hello S&L, just checking in.

EmergencyRoom 10-21-2005 05:25 AM

Sup all?

How's things? Has the writing been good in here lately?

ITRIEDVOODOOONCE 10-21-2005 01:02 PM

go look for yourself.
but seriously, the vets are getting better and the noobs are at least showing some imagery, even though they write cliche/corny shit.

ITRIEDVOODOOONCE 10-21-2005 01:03 PM

I had to put some time into this years issue of my schools literary magazine. As well as tournament season and school stuff. I started criticing again, I did two or three in the past day. As well as adding some stuff to the tutorial by ATC. As for the maggotfelon; I was a little broken by the stupidty of people, but that isn't why I left.

Good to see you're back.

Yeah I imagined so. Thankfully The people I critique are all very nice and take criticism rather well, so I'm thankful of that.

But yeah, it's nice to have you back as well. Write something and post it. I'll be more than glad to check it out. :D

ATC 10-21-2005 07:22 PM

Oh, and Cybergasm, your addition to the guide is much appreciated. Thank you for your time and effort.

CSD & the Soul Machines 10-24-2005 11:51 PM

Hey guys. My band (Good People for Alibis) is really starting to come together. We just played at a bar the other night, and were asked to come back and play more. We play like a folk-rock acoustic kinda thing. My hopes are expanding even more and adding a wide selection of instruments like mandolin, banjo, fiddle, and other stuff. It's looking pretty good right now, and I'm super excited.

A_Perfect_Sonnet 10-25-2005 08:19 AM

The Wallflowers.

theredwonder 10-25-2005 09:44 AM

MMPR - Your band sounds awesome, do you have any links to tracks or anything?

On a different note, i recently bought a £3 PC mic and have started to record acoustic tracks with Audacity. For a cheap mic and a free recording program it's not too shabby.

I don't have any on my school computer. When I do, I'll be sure to post a few.

That's cool about the recording gear. I'd like to hear some of your things as well.

Yeah my singer likes them a lot. I thought the name was pretty cool.

So last night I started writing again. But it was bitter and angsty and terrible, so I decided not to post it. I hope I can write something worth reading soon though and put it up here. I know you all miss my writing ;)

The most recent decent piece of writing I've posted here.

TojesDolan 10-25-2005 05:42 PM

Holy drugadict walrus!

How did you manage to get so many good crits back there! And in just three days! I battle and struggle big time to get like, 8 critiques in a period of one week...

By the way, good songwriting over there. :thumb: I'd make soemthing more elaborate... but it's too old. I'll give you something thorough when you post a new one, ok? :D

Because it was six months ago when S&L was better :-\

Thanks, I wasn't expecting a crit haha. If I get something new up though I'll look forward to hearing your thoughts.

I don't think it was much better...

morrissey 10-25-2005 10:36 PM

6 months ago S&L was in the middle of a seemingly irreversible downward spiral. It's actually improved from that point, but it isn't even as good as it was a year ago now, and things were pretty desperate then. :\

You'd think writing would improve over time.

edit: haha, having Dan post in here was good times though. Even if it was only in one thread.

CSD & the Soul Machines 10-25-2005 10:42 PM

Yeah, ever since I've been here, S&L was never very strong. This seems like the best of times actually. Some of the new posters are making some good stuff.

I should be putting something on Purevolume in the near future, just got to stop sucking at singing first.

I just pop in and out of S&L now, so i can't really comment. I have noticed a lot of good writers that are new to the forum and i've recieved some decent crits.

S&L hasn't been strong since I started posting here.

LC has always been king, however.

theredwonder 10-26-2005 09:46 AM

However, compared to the other forums this topic is something that a lot of people will find to be more personal and less willing to post on the internet. It's a lot easier to talk about what music you like than show your own work to other people, imo.

SubtleDagger 10-26-2005 09:47 AM

I think the big problem is that no one likes critting. Hell, I admit that I don't really like critting (mainly because I don't like just about any of the songs I see here). So we get a bunch of noobs posting one song and no one doing anything productive.

CSD & the Soul Machines 10-26-2005 10:18 AM

It helps that we're beginning to get a core group here that can at least crit each other, and grow as a group. I'm going to try and get better about critting more people and give more suggestions.

Nightvision 10-26-2005 10:49 AM

it's frustrating as well, when you give a well-meaning, although not overly positive critique, there are users out there that go nuts and try to flame you all night. Whilst it's good fun to break out the flaming dictionary every once in a while, it quickly gets tiring.

I keep meaning to critique, but I end up forgetting, and can only just manage to return the ones I get, which is shocking really.

TojesDolan 10-26-2005 02:59 PM

I critique everyone, except lately the obviously car-crashing mentally disabled songs, that I have no clue where to start...

And the ones that are too long. And the ones that are too deep. And the ones that are too shallow and the ones that make me think.

slack 10-26-2005 09:26 PM

It's quickly becoming apparent that I put far too much effort into my critiques. I'll have to fix this right away. :D

Permanent Solution 10-26-2005 11:45 PM
It's quickly becoming apparent that I put far too much effort into my critiques. I'll have to fix this right away. :D
There is no such thing as too much effort into crits. Just make sure you're giving them to the sort of people who will repay you in kind and you won't be wasting your time.

Plus, a great way to improve your writing is by breaking down other people's. You'll be able to point out your own flaws better.

i am the robots 10-27-2005 07:22 AM

I agree that there is no 'too much effort to critiqueing' point, but with me, critiqueing others works is hard because I feel like I'll be too nitpicky if I actually put effort in, probably the main reason I'm never here anymore.

A_Perfect_Sonnet 10-27-2005 12:23 PM

My new mouse is a lot more useful than any critique I've ever received.
I can squeeze the sides and open iTunes.

TojesDolan 10-27-2005 04:42 PM

I make critiques.

And I make circuits.

I can squeeze my girlfriend and she opens something way better than iTunes. :naughty:

A_Perfect_Sonnet 10-27-2005 05:49 PM

Oh, you want to play the girlfriend game. Matt, why do you need to be that guy? I have a girlfriend, but you just have to be that guy don't you? Matt, don't be that guy.
