"James Labrie has supplied lyrics to two songs on the album"

That's pretty cool.

I did not know this, which songs were they?
Blind Faith and Disappear. Great tracks.

OK thread recussitation time...

What album would you guys like to see DT cover next?

Personally I think it would be badass if they did 2112 or Moving Pictures.

edit: changed my mind...Rush's self titled album would be better. :thumb:

Maybe "reign in blood" by slayer ... Would be weird... or "aenema" by tool

hyper22 05-12-2005 08:37 PM

Is it just me or did they take down the samples? Oh well, I have them all saved on my computer anyway.

horseypie 05-13-2005 03:44 AM

'lookin out my back door' by clerence clearwater would be the funniest song for DT to cover......definitely

They could probably pull out some great Rush songs. YYZ would sound sick.

6 String Bassist 05-13-2005 03:34 PM

I only question why DT needs to cover any other bands songs. Keep up the mastering of the modes and scales. And write some more of the most advanced music since Rush and Yes. Let that Berkley and Juliard education shine through.

juggalotricksta 05-14-2005 09:59 AM

You have a point...nothing tops DT's original work IMO. Buts its a cool surprise to hear their take on other popular bands' music too. Thats why I don't get people ranking on the second half of A Change Of Seasons...I think its badass to hear DT doing Queen!

just for the record:

DT originals>>>>>>>DT covers

Hey guys
Little DT help. In the Instrumedley they play Paradigm Shift then another LTE (i think) song which is amazing. Im wonderring what that next song is called?

Universal mind is what you're looking for.
By the way I got Live at Budokan today. It rips their Metropolis 2000 dvd in my opinion (even though that was still utterly amazing). I eargasmed like 5 times while watching it :D.

M7S 05-15-2005 03:05 AM

hehe nice dude, I only own the metropolis dvd ( from the dvds )

I think it's neat whenever DT does cover songs. It's just a nice break from playing their usual songs.

I would love to see another ACOS style album (minus the token epic) containing cover songs, and song medleys.

They have done a cover of YYZ.

I think if Portnoy did the Metropolis DVD a little better (left out all those trippy visuals), it'd have been a lot better. I absolutely love that DVD, but the epileptic parts coupled with the amateur effects got old. The Budokan DVD is excellent and professionally done, but I think the set was a little more boring. I'd have to watch it again, though.

3rdplanet 05-15-2005 04:48 PM

The Budokan DVD is really tasteful, I love the shot of the train flying past in the documentary part...I think it's in the documentary part anyway.

Not in the scene, no, it has not been leaked. Here's an example to see how fast the scene is. When With Teeth was leaked, it was released in the scene an hour after it was leaked.

demon_LLAMA 05-16-2005 02:21 AM

I think DT should cover something challenging for a change, something like SymphonyX.

hope_leaves 05-16-2005 10:53 AM

I've always thought DT should cover Rush's 2112...also maybe a Yes album (not very familiar with Yes, so I can't name one in particular, Fragile's the only one I have)...or an entire Zeppelin album would be cool...any one would sound tremendous. Or Deep Purple.

vashts80 05-16-2005 11:51 AM

I love This Dying Soul now. And Metropolis. :D

MAthiAS 05-16-2005 12:07 PM

Agreed...

the2stranger 05-16-2005 02:19 PM

I would like to see DT cover Arcturus, although I don't know if James has the range anymore to keep up with Garm

MAthiAS 05-16-2005 02:33 PM

They should cover some Nevermore. I really only say that because I'm listening to them now.

pwal 05-16-2005 05:57 PM

i think DT should cover Close to the Edge from Yes.. which IMO is one of the craziest psychadelic song ever made... or villa strangiato from rush cuz it has some kinda mexican groove to it and earing DT doing something like that would be realy different

JamieSomething 05-17-2005 12:27 AM

as far as songs DT has done
the MOP bootlegs
*just happens to have a mixed version of Sanitarium* you can hear everything, soooo, much, better

and I believe they did Red Barchetta..atleast..it sounds like Labrie, really does

and they should do the entire version of Bohemian Rhapsody, c'mon, you hafta admit, that'd be hella tight

badtaste 05-17-2005 06:05 AM

I hear 'Panic Attack' and 'These Walls' have received radio play already.

Quite interesting. Personally, I'm waiting it out until the album comes out. Listening to a new song would sorta be like watching the trailer to Attack of the Clones too many times: you're only punishing yourself.

bassist-bmxer 05-17-2005 06:22 AM

I would like to see DT cover Yes-Roundabout, that would be really cool.

The Forgotten Bassist 05-17-2005 06:25 AM
I tend to agree. Portnoy is very technically capable, but there seems to be a bit of stagnation setting in as far as the level of creativity he has when constructing his beats on recent releases, particularly Train of Thought. Personally, I think our Sonor posterboy, Danny Carey, beats the crap out of Portnoy any day of the week, but Portnoy is still very good. He may, however, (dare I say it?) be declining. But hey, if Neil Peart can take drum lessons, so can Mikey.
I wouldn't say he is declining but yeah, recently his drum beats have all been suspiciously similar.

why not do what is right and legal and wait until its released....THEN download it

ArcLite 05-18-2005 04:32 AM

So I just listened to Johnny P's solo album Suspended Animation yesterday...Amazing album. I think it took hold of my number one instumental album slot. Great playing goes without saying, but there were some incredible melodies in there. Thumbs up to Petrucci.

The JoZ 05-18-2005 06:26 AM
wtf :amaze:
The main page had Dream Theater on it the other day.

And I've heard samples of Octavarium, but I don't think they work anymore.

I like what I heard, although it appears this album will be less heavy than Train of Thought. Some are comparing it to SFAM in terms of sound, and I guess that would be accurate...although I personally think it sounds like a little SFAM, a little Awake, a little ToT...but we'll see.

It's really hard to tell, I mean, Octavarium is 24 minutes long...a 30 second clip cannot possibly accurately represent the whole song :p
