TLG rocks my socks off.
I ordered 'Taught To Be Proud' by Tea Leaf Green off of Amazon.com, but I'm not going to have it by this weekend and I think I'm going on a long drive to visit some schools. Is there a chance someone could hook a brotha up? It's ridiculously good and I'd love to have it for the drive. Of course, I'll give something back in return. I'm arsonmadeeasy on AIM and piratesatellite on soulseek. |
This is a stupid question, but what exactly is a Jam band? Is it as obvious as...a band that jams?
well damn I could have just looked at the top of this page |
^Not really
The term jam band is commonly used to describe psychedelic rock-influenced bands
I'd say that's wrong. |
Some jam bands occasionally explore psychedelic areas while jamming, but they seem to more commonly draw their influences from roots genres and jazz.
|
I think the great thing about jam bands is how diverse they are. You have psychedelic jam bands, blues jam bands, folk jam bands, bluegrass jam bands, jazz jam bands... and a lot of jam bands take many different styles of music and fuse it together to create a unique sound.
I don't have Taught to Be Proud yet. But you could always just get a bunch of their stuff off of http://www.archive.org which is what I do. But I'm actually about to go to the cd store, and if they have it (probably now), I'll probably get it and then I could hook you up. But yeah, the chances of that happening are pretty slim. I've been listening to so much live TLG stuff. They've dominated my last.fm 3 weeks in a row. |
Badmoon, you're in Chicago right? What's Martyrs like? I'm going to see Raq there in early April, and am curious as to what the venue's like.
|
Man, there are so many freaking concerts here the weekend 4/21-4/23. First of all, 4/20 is a pretty special day in the jam band world, so there a bunch of shows then. Particle is here 4/21, and I already have tickets to TLG for 4/22. And Thursday night is the jammys, which will have a tribute to Frank Zappa plus performances by moe., Little Feat, Bela Fleck, Blues Traveler, Richie Havens, and a bunch of other bands I'm too lazy to list. Now there's no way in hell my parents will let me go to this on a Thursday night, but it would be really freaking sweet if they did.
Plus, all weekend there's the Green Apple Music Festival to celebrate Earth Day but you have to buy tickets separately for each band, not one ticket for the whole thing. I already have tickets to TLG, and I probably won't be able to go to more than one show in one weekend, but maybe I can convince my parents to let me go to Blues Traveler or Particle too. Guys, http://www.jambase.com/headsup.asp?storyID=8179 At the bottom of the article, click the Warmup> Freedom link to see a video of a TLG performance. Freedom owns. |
Some jam bands occasionally explore psychedelic areas while jamming, but they seem to more commonly draw their influences from roots genres and jazz.
tru I think most jam bands are like.. jammy. They play as they go, and they make/change songs as they play with each other and kind of see what fits. |
Anyone in the Chicago area should check out Raq when they play at Martyr's on the 7th and 8th
|
I got Tea Leaf Green's ablum Taught to be Proud and can send it if anyone wants a listen.

tmctague@gmail.com Thanks I've been looking for this one, I'll continue my quest based on this listen. |
Anyone heard any Umphrees Mcgee?
They're fricking amazing |
I like them. They're a really fun band.
|
So moe. is coming to Pittsburgh on June 11th, and they're playing for free :D
|
Psh, all my moe. got deleted for some reason. :(
32 Things was a great song. |
Anyone heard any Umphrees Mcgee?
They're fricking amazing
They're playing here with moe. on May 30th. I will be there. It's going to be hot as hell, as well as an outdoor show. Umphrey's is playin' from 6:30 - 8:30, and I think moe. from 8:30 - 10:30 or something. |
I like Umphrey's way more than I like Moe. Not that it really matters, just thought I'd thow it out there.
I did see Moe open for the Allmans this summer at SPAC, and wasn't overly impressed. |
I like moe. live. I haven't seen many jam bands, though, so I might be the wrong guy to ask.
Tea Leaf Green's studio album didn't move me like their live stuff. A little disappointing. |
In the same vein, North Mississippi Allstars are great live, but I didn't like Electric Blue Watermelon And when I saw them live they played most of the songs on that album. A lot of Jam Band songs just simply don't translate well to the studio.
|
You didn't like ELB? I love it lots.
|
Sorry, the Dead are much more important.
Song: Sugar Magnolia Album: Europe 72 |
You didn't like ELB? I love it lots.
I love most every song on the album... live. I guess the problem was that I had been introduced to all those songs in concert, and they just don't even come close in a studio format. Also, it felt like an extremely short disc (I don't have it in front of me, but I don't think the overall playtime was over 60 minutes). The other part might have been that it was so hyped that my expectations were way to high. [Edit: overall play time on ELB is only 49 minutes, with 11 tracks. Way too short of songs for my liking. I know it's studio, but even still...] "Sorry, the Dead are much more important. Song: Sugar Magnolia Album: Europe 72" We'll discuss the Dead, but you have to give us something to discuss. |
I'm listening to EBW right now. I like the Hill Country Revue live album more, but I'm still a big fan of this. Mean Ol' Wind Died Down is great. I hope I can see them live.
|
I had the chance to see them last year, but I didn't go :-/
And I usually prefer shorter albums because unless the album is really amazingly good, I usually get bored or just stop paying attention on longer albums. |
I see that many of you guys have signed up for the Blues mailing list, and while that covers many similar artists to jambands, I was wondering if we shouldn't also start one. If enough people voice interest I'll take up the initiative.
On a side note, most unfortunately YSI has stopped allowing up to a gig for free, in fact, it's down to 100 mb. So that wonderful system no longer works. I've got a friend who I share music with frequently, does anyone know a similar system that works well? |
You mean a site like YSI? There's megaupload, but downloads are slow, and it has pop-ups. Then there's rapidshare, but you have to wait like 80 minutes between downloads, and there's one more I know of, but I can't think of the name.
|
I'd contribute if we started a mailing list.
|
Anyone here listen to Steely Dan?
|
We could start a mailing list, except most of the jam bands are on Archive.org for bootlegs. :)
|
Yeah I was going to say what Jon said about tons of jam band stuff being on the archive. But I'd definitely sign up for and contribute to a jam band mailing list if anyone starts one.
Steely Dan is great. All I have is Aja but it's really good. For some reason, they're a band I never bothered to check out on my own, but someone sent out Aja and I enjoyed it quite a bit. sendspace is the other filesharing program. TLG tomorrow night. w00t! |
We could start a mailing list, except most of the jam bands are on Archive.org for bootlegs. :)
I'd imagine this mailing list would include stuff that isn't/no longer allowed on archive. eg. Commercial releases [Dick's Picks/Live Phish], Phish shows, GD soundboards, Allman Bros. shows, North Mississippi Allstars shows (I was shocked when I found out they weren't on the archive) |
I'm up for it. I have around 40 Deadlegs by now and about 6 Dick's Picks.
|
I'd definitely be down for it. I've got a ton of live Allman's and what n ot.
|
I could contribute, I have an Allmans Instant Live, some Dick's Picks, some Wartsandalls, and we could do studio albums too.
|
jambandmailinglist-subscribe@yahoogroups.com
you may have to register an account with Yahoo, but that seemed relatively low hassle for the ease. |
What do we need to do?
|
All you have to do is send an email to the one listed above, and it'll put you on the mailing list.
After doing so, it will send you an email back detailing how to send a message to the group. I'm pretty sure that all that's involved in that process is sending your email to the address jambandmailinglist@yahoogroups.com, and then it sends it to all on the mailing list. However, you do have to be subsribed in order to do so. My thoughts are, whenever one of us wants to send an album to the listserve all you have to do is upload it to YSI or rapidshare, and then send the link in an email to the group. |
