I wonder what I would do if I talked to Tom Gabel right now.
I would sing him my song.

lynch_me 12-21-2005 10:34 PM

So ridiculous.

Anarcho Poser 12-21-2005 10:36 PM

So I was reading their bio on the fat wreck site.
In a world that cares more about how things look and treats the contents of your mind as something to trick or ignore, it’s important to understand that Against Me! stands for something. It’s also important to understand that Against Me! just aren’t toeing anyone elses line. We’re talking something universal and with more staying power, like music that’s rich and full of life: scars, spontaneous clapping, and mystery. Music that supercedes genre.

Against Me! approaches being a band with an honesty and directness that is rarely translated into popular music. It boils down to this: they’re just fully concerned with making the best music they can while staying true to who they are. Searching for a Former Clarity proves it.
Lazybassplr56 12-21-2005 10:37 PM

It could all be a sick joke? Right?.............:(

Brain Toad 12-21-2005 10:41 PM
It could all be a sick joke? Right?.............:(
It actually could. The only place it was posted was their website with the heading "Submitted for your message board disapporval" an obvious jab to their former message board and the ending "for real" just makes it seem even more of a joke. Sire has nothing on their site, nor does WB Records or Fat Wreck, all of which surely would be quick to post about it.

Rise Me Up 12-21-2005 10:41 PM
I just wrote this, I hope some of you will agree with it:

You used to write songs that meant something to me
Made me believe in punk again, gave me some hope
But that all went out the window when you repressed the Crime EP
You've moved away from the you of old and I'll have to cope

Now you're concerned with the grander scheme
You've forgotten what you said, got up and moved on
Away from the idea of a perfect underground scene
Where everybody's happy and everyone belongs

Now your fans will grow in number with every single tour
They'll spend less time on your music and more time on their hair
Will they comprehend what you used to stand for?
Oh Tom Gabel do you even fucking care?

Do you think about your ex-ideals, may I enquire?
Now you've abandoned all your sweet anarchist rants
You blown it all to hell, you've gone and signed with Sire
Now you're labelmates with Spongebob Squarepants

Now everything you say is suspect, every single word
You can no longer make me believe, no longer make me think
All that leaves your lips is now only a turd
Falling from your mouth, straight into my drink

Just another well-oiled cog in the elite system
Any integrity you had is gone, your new message is hollow
Shaking hands with business mean when you used to resist them
Just another strained chorus, another "WHOA-OH-OH"

Singing piles of money make you rich and Baby, I'm a Capitalist
But though you've abandoned it your old message is not dead
You introduced to idea into thought-dreams and there it still exists
The place where everyone's belongs will live on in your fan's heads

Because I'll still get your records and when you play I'll still go see
But I'll remember when you gave me reason to believe
As you ride off into the horizon of money and MTV
And mark you down as one more fallen at the altar of greed

One more band that I loved, that has turned against me
I'm going to post this on another forum, if that's cool with you, and I'll give you full credit. I'll even link to your myspace page.

Could be. I dunno though, record label sites sometimes take a while to post things like that.

I dunno, I feel kinda guilty for being this upset about it, but... man, it feels like my girlfriend cheated on me or something. laff.

That's cool. Link to my last.fm page though.

sketchyjoe 12-21-2005 10:45 PM

It is on http://punknews.org.

Anarcho Poser 12-21-2005 10:45 PM

Maybe they're reading this and laughing at us. Gasp. Those jerks.
That's cool. Link to my last.fm page though.
Okay, can I have the link to it?

Brain Toad 12-21-2005 10:46 PM
It is on http://punknews.org.
Only as comments, I haven't seen an actual news story, and that news is submitted by their users, so its basically a forum.

EDIT: article wasnt in google results.

sketchyjoe 12-21-2005 10:46 PM

And the news post is followed by the exclamation "For Real!" It does seem slightly suspicious.
Okay, can I have the link to it?
Dicks with a great sense of humour.

Kepone-Factory 12-21-2005 11:00 PM

so now that we've got to the bottom of this we can move on..

let see what else is in the news today..

"canada stalls on trade pact"

obese_breasts 12-21-2005 11:18 PM

I hold this in a similar state of apathy as Nick. I see the hypocracy with their previous beliefs but this isn't going to keep me from listening to some great music.

TakeWarning 12-21-2005 11:50 PM

This is bad news.

I just listened to Jamaican Me Crazy. It sounded kinda...hollow.

CameoRole 12-22-2005 01:25 AM

I don't get how you can listen to just the music and ignore the words. Sure, music is often more important than trite teenage poetry, but Against Me! tried to deliver a message with songs that weren't about the average girlfriend breaking up. Pints of Guiness is a GREAT take on what would be a hackneyed subject. But tell me, sans those subject songs, could you listen to Un-Thought of Heroes or Reinventing or Those Anarcho Punks without questioning them for hypocrisy? How could they sing so passionately about the underground and then spit on it multiple times? I mean, FINE, they didn't like people at PIX making fun of the ham boards, but was it necessary to threaten legal action? These were the people they used to support and when they ****ed them over, they expected them to bend over and take it, but alas, Tom underestimated the vehemence of his peers and the fever that their music inspires. I'll still listen and enjoy because yes, they make good music and the lyrics are still great and they're probably one of few bands whom I sing along with, but will it feel hollow sometimes? Of course. Am I gonna feel sick going to the Warped Tour to see them for thirty minutes among NOFX and Anti-Flag fans? Duh. At least they play mostly 'old' stuff, but I got a feeling that'll change soon.

I <3 NOFX. NOFX > AM!

Anti-Flag, I'm not a fan of.

To each his own. Some guys like men and if you like NOFX, I'd assume you're part of that subcategory.

Wow. How intelligent. Go suck off Andy Warhol.

Sid 12-22-2005 02:35 AM

Haha, NOW it's cool to dislike AM!

I stopped liking AM! the moment the music started sucking. Politics doesn't bother me. How many other punk bands have sold punk to the kids before? It's our own fault if we believe them.

Can't be upset at anyone but yourself if you put that much trust in a band's lyrics.

Truth

Sid 12-22-2005 02:58 AM

Yeah. I know the new album has grown on you nick, but it just never did for me.

Don't Lose Touch, anyone?

Brain Toad 12-22-2005 03:08 AM

I like their new stuff, and I'll probably like the new album on Sire (if it exists) if it doesn't suck, but that's just me.

Don't Lose Touch was catchy in a bad way, but I still enjoy listening to it.

Not necassarily Sidney.

PS: Maybe there's something wrong with the audience?

TakeWarning 12-22-2005 07:00 AM

I just sent my friend Joe's song and told him it was by me.
