argh, this terrible older "Trick Daddy" song is on tv right now. its the one where he stole the tune from "Boogie Shoes". Its so bad and none of the lyrics flow nicely with the song for the most part.
Ah I remember that song. I agree, pretty lame.
Anyone dig Gang Starr's Daily Operation?
Yep: http://www.sputnikmusic.com/album.php?reviewid=5488

Definitely a favorite.

antiant 08-04-2006 01:20 AM

anyone heard of or like The Procussions? if you're into "live band hip hop" a la the roots, colossus, crown city rockers etc then you may like them as well...here's a link to check them out http://www.theprocussions.com/audio.html just bought their most recent album "5 sparrows for 2 cents"

ATM 08-04-2006 11:18 AM

That sounds cool. Have you guys heard Gym Class Heros? They are "live band hip hop" as well.

gaslight 08-06-2006 09:13 AM

The Roots are pretty outstanding, I'm really liking an instrumental album of theirs I happened across.

Kyle 08-06-2006 11:32 AM

That sounds pretty cool, I only have Phrenology right now. I do like the album, but it's not as great as I thought it would be before I bought it.

ATM 08-06-2006 09:05 PM

Try and hear some live Roots stuff.

Dice 08-07-2006 12:52 AM

Hell yeah- I enjoy listening to The Roots. How long have they actually been around?

Kyle 08-07-2006 09:12 AM
Try and hear some live Roots stuff.
I've seen a few clips on mtv2's festival highlights a few years back. That was the reason I bought Phrenology, because they were so great live. That and because The Seed is like the best song ever.

Liquid Force 08-07-2006 12:19 PM

I'm not sure If any one has mentioned him yet, but does any one listen to Immortal Technique?

Liquid Force 08-07-2006 12:20 PM
Hell yeah- I enjoy listening to The Roots. How long have they actually been around?
If I'm not mistaking I think it might be the late 80's/early 90's. I not its not recent at least.

EDIT-sorry about double post

Kyle 08-07-2006 01:53 PM

Formed in 1987.

Quirky Turkey 08-07-2006 02:31 PM

I'm a newbie to hip hop music but I'm lovin De la Soul's Three Feet High And Rising at the moment.

Is there any other similar albums that I should be checking out?

Kyle 08-07-2006 02:39 PM

that De La Soul album is great. I'm nt Hip hop expert, but it sounds like you would like the same kinda upbeat Hip Hop that I like. start off with accessible artists/groups like;

Jurrassic 5
The Roots
Outkast
Dilated Peoples
Dangerdoom / MF Doom

You've probably heard all these guys before, but they're a few of my favorites. Then if you like all that, try out some of the underground artists that i'm sure the other guys can suggest.

Cool. Will definitely check out a few of those artists this week

De La Soul were part of some movement in hiphop in the early 90s that was called Native Tongues. This movement was comprised of some 4 or 5 groups:

De La Soul
A Tribe Called Quest
Jungle Brothers
Black Sheep
3rd Bass

These are all pretty similar in style to early De La Soul, at least their early work, stay away from new work by the Jungle Brothers. You can't go wrong with their first 3 or 4 albums though. :)
Not a huge fan of Jay-Z, although I heard some of his songs he goes into the studio and basically freestyles.
That's basically all his songs. Well, he claims he never wrote anything down, so he may have planned out some of his raps in his head, but still that would be ridiculous to do for an entire song, let alone every song.

On another note, I was at Lollapalooza this weekend and I saw Lyrics Born (who was allright, but most of his set consisted of "say yeahhhhh! Say ohhhh!"), Blackalicious, Common, and Kanye. It was sweeeeeeeeeeeeeet.

Kyle 08-08-2006 12:41 PM

How were blackalicious and Kanye? I saw Common on the live stream, he ruled. Plus his DJ was amazing!
How were blackalicious and Kanye? I saw Common on the live stream, he ruled. Plus his DJ was amazing!
I was almost front row for Blackalicious, they were real sweet. They had two singers/dancers with them, and then a skinny white guy in a tie on the keys. He was ridiculously out of place, but they were awesome. Gab freestyled for like 3 minutes, and it was basically ridiculous.

Kanye was good, but he had sound problems at first and we could abrely hear his voice. After awhile he just went "We have a successful tour and then we come back to MY city and y'all fuck up the sound?!? Whoever is doing sound tonight will NOT be doing it again, I promise you that" and it was better afterwards. He brought out Twista, Lupe Fiasco, and the frontman of some up-and-coming rap group I didn't catch the name of.

I was mad at Kanye for getting my hope up though. After one of the songs, all the lights went out and everyone was cheering for like 30 seconds, then strobes started flashing and stuff and Kanye's dj started playing the sample that goes "Allow my to reintroduce myself, my name is HOV, H to the OV, I used to move snowflakes..." And I completely lost it. I was fully expecting Jay to come out right then, but no such luck.

As for Common, he was one of my favorite performances of the weekend, and I almost missed him for the Flaming Lips. Common and Broken Social Scene were probably my top 2.

You missed the Flaming Lips? Everyone I know who has seen them think they are the best band they've ever seen live! common was excellent though, and sounds like you had a great time.

I really wanted to go to Lollpalooza, but I kinda live in England. I'm goin to Reading Festival in a few weeks, and I should get to see Broken Social Scene there.

Well, I couldn't decide between seeing the Flaming Lips or Common, but Common and Kanye were on the same stage an hour apart, and I realized that if I saw the Flaming Lips I'd be like 30 miles away from Kanye.

I haven't seen the line-up for Reading, but it sounds sweet if Broken Social Scene is gonna be there. I'm still gonna try and catch them on their final tour this fall.

Kyle 08-08-2006 02:52 PM

Yeah, I'd be torn between the two aswell I think.

the Reading line-up is nothing on the line up for Lollapalooza, but it's local so it's always good fun to go to. Looking forward to seeing Muse, Pearl Jam and Mastodon especially. As far as Hip Hop goes, Dizzee Rascal is playing, apparantly he puts on a good live show. Also Plan B too, he might be entertaining.

Cygnus Inter Anates 08-08-2006 03:16 PM

Adman should've done Lollapalooza.

sexymuffin 08-08-2006 09:14 PM

so everyone listens to all this non mainstream rap and stuff but whatever ludacris pwns.

badtaste 08-09-2006 06:41 AM

Could someone suggest a group, similar to Jurassic 5, but slightly more raw and hard in nature? I'm currently listening to 'Quality Control' and it's not working for me. It's good chill out music, but I want something that I can ultimately bop around to.

ATM 08-09-2006 08:14 AM

Give A Tribe Called Quest a try. Q Tip provides the smoother rhymes while Phife Dawg has a bit more of an edge to him. It makes for a good combination.

Cygnus Inter Anates 08-09-2006 09:04 AM

I liked The Low End Theory for about a week, and then I got really bored with it.

The Jungler 08-09-2006 11:49 AM

You should check out The Midnight Marauders it's alot better than anything I've heard off Low End.

form 08-09-2006 03:27 PM

gice what are some, more ''harder'' rap in general, like angry

i need more of that in my rap

idk, i cant really explain it, maybe like ghost by 2pac, or something

Spoonful 08-09-2006 04:10 PM

N.W.A.

Hey, so apparently Andre from Outkast plays guitar now and is incorporating guitar into the music? This is pretty cool.
