I have Orchid, but that's the one album I always tend to ignore..

i did a big Opeth feature in my college paper when i reviewed Ghost Reveries (a small history, with mini reviews for all the albums and lamentations. took up two whole pages, it was awesome). I only gave Orchid 3.5 stars out of 5, where everything else was 4 and above, though i mentioned that some Opeth fans love it dearly

what am i missing with Orchid? i used to hate Morningrise and even Still Life... i havent listened to it in months, maybe ill give it a spin later

as for Weakness, that song is great. one of my "perfect" music moments was driving through my neighborhood at 4 a.m. on a chilly winter night, then that song kicked in and i realized how powerful it was after disliking it before

see? that's the kind of epiphany i need with the "Orchid" album

gmoneyguy 05-06-2006 11:51 AM

THat kind of reminds of when I was in New Orleans for an Opeth show. Me, my bro, my friend where walking down the street and some passed by us blaring Ghost of Perdition.

jpshortstuff 05-06-2006 11:55 AM

BWP was my first as well, but when i heard the growling on TLA i thought uh-oh im never going to like this. I was so wrong. Im so glad i got inot Opeth because they were a gateway from my life of listening solely to Dream Theater to my new life of liking a lot more stuff now verging on Death Metal.

 You fool!

Orchid is like a religious experience!

You're really into Orchid, aren't you?

While it's still a solid release, it can't compete with their later material (Still Life, Blackwater Park, and Deliverance).

Heck, it can't even compete with Morningrise. The only album that I think it it's better than is My Arms, Your Hearse.

Darkness 05-06-2006 12:30 PM

I hope Flynn doesn't see that last comment.

csl316 05-06-2006 12:46 PM

k, deleted for Thor
what, you mean like U2 live?? :p
In the name of all things holy, keep U2 out of this thread.

Killtacular 05-06-2006 01:23 PM

Orchid is my least favourite album now, cept for Ghost Reveries of course. But that doesn't count as an album.

what's wrong with GR? i think it tries all sorts of new things, mostly on the successful side. it also features some of their tightests songwriting yet, IMO

I disagree here on so many levels (Two). Morningrise is my least favourite and MAYH has recently surpassed Still Life.

Bleh.

That's why.

And the ways that it barely even sounds like Opeth anymore. The killer riffs of the past are replaced with keyboard masturbation. No me gusta nada. It just doesn't have that special something.

csl316 05-06-2006 02:43 PM

well, to each his own

Thor 05-06-2006 03:06 PM

Morningrise is the best album out of the first three albums. It's consistent all the way through (unlike the other two) and contains what could possibly be Opeth's best song, "To Bid You Farewell".

JamJar 05-06-2006 03:08 PM

TBYF is amazing but the randomness of the songwriting is the main off putting factor for me. I think that MAYH is amazingly consistent, but to each his own I guess.

Thor 05-06-2006 03:10 PM

Well when I meant consistent I wasn't talking about the songwriting (I do admit that it's a bit random at times), I was just talking about the quality of it all. I can listen to Morningrise all the way through and not complain, whereas in Orchid and MAYH I'll skip a song or two.

Crysiss 05-08-2006 11:19 AM

You guys are letting this thread die.

And you call yourselves Opeth fans:p

JamJar 05-08-2006 11:36 AM

We need new music to post about. We keep repeating ourselves over and over :(

Crysiss 05-08-2006 11:39 AM

I dont think that it should be strictly Opeth that we have to talk about.

In what way are Woods Of Ypres like opeth?

JamJar 05-08-2006 11:41 AM

I haven't listened to all that much Woods Of Ypres but there is a similar feel of light and heavy with clean vocals and growls. The heavy parts seem quite similar to Opeth's but Woods have a more summery fell in comparison to Opeth felling quite wintery.

Cardboard Headgear 05-08-2006 11:42 AM

They both rule.

Yea, TBYF is one amazing *** song. I pretty much agree with your whole post. Its the best post i've ever seen in my life. You go!:thumb:

Yea, thats a pretty good comparison. Im waiting for it to be uploaded in the Daily upload.

Well how about anyone who DOESN'T have over 1 000 posts in this thread isn't an Opeth fan. :D

Stormrider 05-08-2006 04:41 PM

Haha, you're the only Opeth fan in that case :p ...DUH !

/states the obvious

Thor 05-08-2006 06:07 PM

I would have talked in this thread more, but I was the one with the last post for a long time. Oh well, at least we're back in action, fellow Opethians.

You know what? If you play bass, Damnation is one really fun album to improvise over. As long as you have a decent ear and can pick out the chord changes and such it's incredibly fun.

NP - Opeth - Windowpane

It's true. My brother has perfect pitch and I'm incredibly jealous of him.

I'm now listening to "In My Time Of Need" DIM, and I know that makes you happy. It's probably my favorite off of the album, especially the chorus.

Yes it is my favorite song. It has so much meaning for me. I first heard it at time that I needed to hear something like that.

EDIT: If I had perfect pitch the world would end. I have stated this many times in theory class.

Is it your favorite Opeth song, or favorite song of all time?

...you take music theory? So do I. I'm in a normal music theory class but I signed up for AP Music Theory next year so I'll actually learn some stuff.

gmoneyguy 05-08-2006 06:31 PM

Fave Opeth... I don't really have a favorite song of all time

I'm a music major.

I'm not exactly sure if I have a single favorite song of all time, but I think I have two, and Opeth claims one of them (The Leper Affinity).

Since I'm still in high school, I've been thinking about what I want to do when I go to college. I'm really into music (duh, I talk on here all the time), and do you like what you're doing? Or is being a music major not all it's cracked up to be?

I love it, Just be prepared to work hard at your studies. The great thing about being a music major is that you form a tight bond with your fellow classmates.

Sounds like a deal.

Well now that Damnation is finishing up, I'm going to get off MX for the night. See you all tomorrow, fellow Opeth soldiers.

Shattered_Future 05-08-2006 07:00 PM

Gnite friend.

I think I'm gonna major in music production/engineering...I since realized I'm probably not going to be a good enough musician to make a full time career out of it.

Plus, this way, if I ever do feel like writing a record, I'll have connections.

Stoo 05-08-2006 07:14 PM

I never done music in school. They made it really crap, and I wasn't really into music in general back then.

Something I always regret is not taking music in school.

Darkness 05-08-2006 07:15 PM

That's exactly like me, I hated music/music class in elementary, but then found my own love for it in later jr high. I wish my high school offered some kind of music program besides choir... :upset:

Shattered_Future 05-08-2006 07:17 PM

I took general music in 6th and 8th grade, and chorus in 7th. Hated all of it.

I got to take Music Theory this year, which I love. Best class.

A good portion of it is a bull**** class though...like today, we learned the fine art of moving risers down to the stage.

Our county has a horrid music program...

Stoo 05-08-2006 07:18 PM

I know, it was bollocks. They sat the class down with a guitar each and all we did for an hour was strum. We weren't even doing chords!

17 isn't really late to start guitar. I'd have just preffered a little earlier.
