No Demon of the Fall?
ITs been out of their set for a while now. They didn't play it when I saw them. |
I think Mikael wanted Ghost Reveries to be a really dark album, and I believe he succeeded to some degree... The problem is though, part of what makes some of the earlier Opeth albums so dark and atmospheric, is the fact that the production is so bad/muddy.. And I think Mikael doesn't want to move away from the crystal clear production they've had since blackwater park
Production has little to do with that. I feel the song writing on Ghost wasn't actually that evil.
It keeps them fresh, but at some points they don't seem like songs. At times it sounds like just a bunch of separate riffs piled together. I still like it though, but the structure a bit slack.
Well last night when they played Under a Weeping Moon, Mik asked the crowd if they liked it, one guy said no he just smiled and said "well you’re just not smart enough for that song." So I saw them last night, my first proper metal gig and it was nothing short of amazing. They were so tight and sounding perfect. I had never being to a proper and every band I ever really saw sounded horrible or not that great, but I was flabbergasted at the exact perfect sounds this band brought and not an ounce of messiness. I was waiting too see if it was true about Mikeal the funny man and yes it was true. At the start of the show, "be ready for a night of sh*t humour." hahah yes it was dry but you couldn't help but laugh. Setlist was: Ghost of Perdition White Cluster The Amen Corner The Baying of the Hounds Closure Under a Weeping Moon The Grand Conjuration The Leper Affinity Encore: Soldier of Fortune (Deep Purple Cover) Deliverance TGC was soooo good live, along with Closure, TLA and to end the concert there was nothing like the repetitive BANG BABAB BANG BANG of Deliverance. That was cool. Mik's jokes Because it was at a theme park Mik said "yaa the carousels outside will suck power from my amp now and again but that’s wonderful." "Mendez is going to get naked and suck his long co*k" (Mendez gives cheeky grin" PS: He looks so cool live. "I f-ing love your country, actually I have being f-ing in you country, I had my honeymoon in this country, I have had blow jobs in the country". And many many more, actually sometimes you were common get on with it. The gig was the most people who had ever came and saw them. WHich I found amazing consirdering it was in Australia. Someone call out Black Rose Immortal and Mik said "You only like that friggin song because its 20 mins long. You wanna see us suffer. I played a riff of that song the other day and no one knew it" Play a little bit of Black Rose. The opening act the eternal was pretty cool, so I brought their CD. Great great time. |

Great great time.
Last night was one of the best nights of my life.Easily the best show ive been to.I was very happy with the setlist, mainly cos they played The Lepper Affinity which i was praying they play.I recorded the whole concert on a tape voice recorder. The quality is fairly **** in the distorted sections, but sounds reasonable in the soft parts and while mike is talking between songs. It will just good to go back and listen to it. More funny stuff: Mike to the crowd after the first song "Shh,Shh....Shut up" "I love this country,i had my honeymoon here.Ive been ****ing in this country......and even got blow jobs too". "People has this big perception that everyone in Sweeden just **** all the time and all the chicks have blonde hair and big tits.......Its true!" Theres more i will put up later. I waited around after and the band pulled out of the car park thing in front of us, i was hoping they would stop to sing **** but the just waved and kept going. So that was a little annoying.Overall though,an amazing night.Imo the best song live was White Cluster. It blew me away and will now be one of my favourite songs from them. |
I know i'm going to get flamed to the sh*ts for this, but Mike's clean vocals last night were terrible, i'm not sure if it was a tech issue, but they sounded all nasal and at times, chipmunk-ish, it ruined a lot of clean parts for me. I was really dissapointed in the setlist, as i mentioned above, because they only really displayed one side of their music, and as we all know, Opeth is a 2-sided band. My favourite song of the night was either The amen corner or Under a weeping moon. They also focused a lot more on a psychadelic kind of aspect of their music, using a fair amount of wah and relying on keyboards in some of the older songs, which kinda missed the point for me.
Ehh...I think BWP is better than Hearse in terms of overall quality AND consistency.
I'd give it the quality but not the consistancy. |
My dream setlist would be:
The Moor Deliverance Bleak Demon of the Fall In My Time of Need The Grand Conjuration Black Rose Immortal The Leper Affinity Encore: To Bid You Farewell |
My dream setlist would be:
The Moor Deliverance Bleak Demon of the Fall In My Time of Need The Grand Conjuration Black Rose Immortal The Leper Affinity Encore: To Bid You Farewell
*drool* Mine would be something like... Leper Affinity Bleak Drapery Falls In My Time of Need Ghost of Perdition The Baying of the Hounds When Windowpane The Moor White Cluster Encore: Demon of the Fall To Bid You Farewell |
Pretty similar to mine. I kept mine a bit shorter just because all of the songs I picked were very long (especially Black Rose Immortal). I can hardly complain with your list though. It's good that you picked plenty of BWP, but I don't see anything off of Deliverance:(
|
i remember when they played dallas with the sounds of the uderground. they only gave them time to play 2 songs so lamb of crap can play their full 45 minute set. how on earth do u pick lamb of crap over opeth, i still wonder to this day. i drove 4 hours alone to that show. considering i was alone it seemed wayy longer. but it was still worth it for opeth. in addition gwar was awesome.
|
That's quite a bummer. Wasn't Opeth even headlining? That's such a crime against music, even though I like Lamb of God.

I had Deliverance in there, but I removed it along with some other songs cos my list was so big. :( lol |
i like lamb of god to...well to some extent. their just above ur average crap metal band. i find their songs repetitive. a lot of the people went to see lamb of god more than opeth. it was that whole american metal crap hype. what happened was that a 1 hour rain delay put the show behind. it was right after gwar. but clutch got a fll set then opeth was next. they got screwed and thats when lamb of god came on. it was 12am by then. i don't understand why opeth was headlining. if it was me opeth would headline a tour that included metallica. they are just superior

wasn't** sorry bad habit of not reviewing my messages
Which one's better, My Arms, Your Hearse or Blackwaterpark? I actually sat here for like 5 minutes debating and I can't pick. They both have so much good songs on them.
MAYH, every time. |
Seeing them tomorrow night!
|
^Have fun, champ! :thumb:
I saw them on the 20th, excellent stuff. However, they seem to be playing the exact same setlist throughout Australia. Travel back a couple of pages if you want to see said setlist. MAYH is very swiftly becoming my favourite album, and to those who mentioned before that the Morningrise to My Arms, Your Hearse transition was their most different(and fruitful), I completely agree. It's a very definitive album for them and I think Opeth really discovered the direction and style they wished to take. It goes without saying that I am extremely glad they made such decisions to not clone dual guitar/melody slutting. NP~ When @!@@! |
MAYH is also swiftly becoming my favourite album.
|
I love how Mikael thought MAYH was **** after they recorded it, then he really got into the style.
|
The Funeral Portrait, Moonlapse Vertigo and By The Pain I See In Others ftw for most underrated Opeth songs.
They are amazing!! But, in particular The Funeral Portrait. That has some of the best riffs/solos/vocals I've ever heard. I would cause genocide to see that live. Any thoughts(on most underrated)? |
I definitely agree with your choices.
I would also say the following: Wreath Master's Apprentices The Night and the Silent Water Nectar |
Underrated?
WHITE CLUSTER all the way man. |
I would say Moonlapse Vertigo and White Cluster would be the most.
|
Wheres the love for Morningrise and Orchid:p
EDIT: Didnt read drones post. |
I love how they have one part in In the Pain I See in Others thats sounds kind of like demented circus music.
|
I know man. I was smoking weed one time with my friends, we were all high and my friend is like "Man i hear like....a clown song or something" Its funny you say that. |
I love it, I actually was listening to it on the way home from school.
|
Wheres the love for Morningrise and Orchid:p
EDIT: Didnt read drones post.
Morningrise has plenty of love, I think. Even Mikael said on the documentary that most Opeth fans find it to be their best album. Orchid is still good, but it's just a lesser version of MR. |
"Man i hear like....a clown song or something"
 That part does sound like a circus. It's awesomely creepy though, especially with the lyrics. And that reminds me, BTPISIO is another HIGHLY underrated song. Probably my second favorite off Deliverance after the title track. In fact maybe my first favorite. Morningrise does have lots of love. Even if the songs are just a bunch of parts all thrown together, the parts are too incredible not to love. I think it's the acoustic parts that really make that album, too, especially Black Rose Immortal. That song has a bunch of Opeth's very best acoustic parts ever. |

But still, Morningrise wouldn't be nearly as amazing if it wasn't for "To Bid You Farewell", the best song on the album and Opeth's 2nd best song ever (IMO). You can't beat the very chilled out jamming the band does until the very depressing and beautiful guitars at 7:06. It's pure musical bliss. |
Orchid is still good, but it's just a lesser version of MR.
I'll pretend I didn't hear that. :p Morningrise is great, but it has some severe flaws in my eyes. Black Rose Immortal has to be one of my least favorite Opeth songs, despite some really sweet parts. |

By the way, nice to see you back. Haven't seen you posting in a while. |

i have bought every opeth album from blackwater park onwards, and iv been into them since 2002 (im guessing, i cant really remember when BWP came out) i'v also 'aquired' *wink wink nudge nudge* the rest, i think im also going to buy still life aswell, but iv not really listened to the rest enough to warrent me buying them yet, the slightly poorer production quality compared to the newer stuff really throws me off, but give it time, and i can probably see me buying them all, (and who says internet piracy damages record sales)
my favourite song is probably really predictable, but its bleak. basically i think the whole of blackwater park is amazing |
Normally people buy the albums with out really knowing what it is going to sound like.
|
I never see a problem with poor production, I fall in love with the music:)
|
Opeth's production doesn't really bother me, except for the bass tone on Morningrise. It sounds really, unbelievably crappy...which is a shame, since the basslines are so damn good.
Some bands just have production that makes their music completely unlistenable though. |

The vocalist sounds identical to Mikael. I have heard the cleans though. EDIT: It cuts off right where he starts to sing the "Soothing Trance" part. |

Something I've noticed with production is that whenever Martin Lopez does straight 16ths or triplets on double bass, it often sounds pretty sloppy. Maybe it's just me.
|
I watched Lamentations again today and I really think they should have played Demon of the Fall instead of A Fair Judgement. The whole croud was screaming for it, it just would have made the ending alot better.
