black saint and the sinner lady by mingus is actually a pretty cool album

gaslight 01-22-2010 09:59 AM

Mingus had so much awesome stuff. A really interesting dude. So sad the way he died.

If you haven't read his open letter/essay thing "What Is A Jazz Composer" you should have a read of it, it's very worthwhile :).

BassVirtuoso 01-22-2010 09:59 AM

gaslight didnt we both used to be mods =(

BassVirtuoso 01-22-2010 10:00 AM

i have the same creativity complex as mingus where sometimes i'm really creative and musical and can do nothing but write music, and other times i have no sense of harmony or pitch. im not nearly as good as mingus at anything though

gaslight 01-22-2010 10:12 AM

Nah man I was never a mod, that stuff isn't my bag.

It's pretty terrifying just the extent and depth of the music that was lurking in that man's mind. Soft beautiful tunes and the full on punch in the face efforts (sometimes literal).

Anytime I want to be inspired or to feel put in my place enough to knuckle down and practise I just open my Mingus fake book and think damn, this is what I should spend my time on, not bloody videogames and television and internet and whatnot.
im not nearly as good as mingus at anything though
That should be your life motto. It's full of epiphany & fail.

BassVirtuoso 01-22-2010 10:18 AM

well i am alive, so i do have him on that one. **** you charlie.

gaslight 01-22-2010 10:20 AM

Must we forever **** on the deceased?

I mean, really :p.

Guys like Mingus reaffirm for me that the only thing I really want to do in life is write music.

That and own a house one day but they're probably mutually exclusive.

BassVirtuoso 01-22-2010 10:23 AM

well i mean the only true way to cherish our short and relatively inconsequential existence is to recognize the fact that we are alive at any moment possible, and of course what is living if we don't have the dead in perspective.

gaslight 01-22-2010 10:27 AM

I don't know if "in perspective" and "**** the dead" are inseperable .

BassVirtuoso 01-22-2010 10:28 AM

same difference. not like it matters since nothings going to make them deader than they already are...the rest is just semantics =p

gaslight 01-22-2010 10:31 AM

Fair enough BV, blessed art thou

BassVirtuoso 01-22-2010 10:33 AM

i wish i could make a living off of smoking and contemplating existence

gaslight 01-22-2010 10:37 AM

Philosophy degree -> teaching other people who want a philosophy degree = that

Philosophy professorship + tenure = double that

BassVirtuoso 01-22-2010 10:38 AM

thats definitely plan b

gaslight 01-22-2010 10:46 AM

Well yeah man it's just sensible to have a Plan B like that, you know, just in case getting stoned for a living doesn't pan out .

FunkMetalBass 01-22-2010 10:48 AM
i wish i could make a living off of smoking
It would be badass.

I realized long ago that my math & physics abilities suffered when I did, so I gave up on it.

However, I've reached the point in my math career where things are all logic-based and arithmetic operations are replaced by proofs. Since it's slightly less rigid and much more theoretical in nature, smoking might be the answer. :)

I still have random drug tests at work though, so I'll need to wait for something that resembles legality of the substance before I even travel that road.

gaslight 01-22-2010 10:55 AM
I've backed away from working on things that I found too difficult, and I think it's a soft thing to do every time I do it. If I just stuck with it, I'd have made a lot more progress each time. That's my point, that people cheat themselves out of progress by making those excuses.
I don't typically practice difficult music. I practice playing simple music perfectly.

I had my time with the technical stuff. In the end I amassed a bunch of skills that turned out to be pretty useless.
Practise isn't supposed to be fun, no-one has ever said it should be fun. Playing is fun, practise is hard, that's why it's practise. I don't know why people have trouble seperating these concepts in their head.
There are ways to make practice fun.

Like frequent masturbation breaks?

I concur.

gaslight 01-22-2010 11:14 AM

Those are called solos.

FunkMetalBass 01-22-2010 12:20 PM

I built the bulk of my pedal board last night, and it's pretty sweet. I built it a bit tall, so that will have to be adjusted in later builds, but other than that, it's pretty slick. :)

I think I'll use a band saw for the majority of the work next time, as well as building it out of something other than 5-ply plywood. The table saw is fairly inaccurate and the wood warped a little bit due to the extreme climate change we had recently (pretty big storm over the past few days), so maybe MDF would be a better material.

I'm going to add one more brace to the design for stability and then cover it in carpet, install the latches & rubber feet, and throw the pedals on. I want to take it for a test run at practice next week.

This was a simple and fun build for sure. After some minor design adjustments, I'll gladly draw it all out in some CAD program and post the design for you guys if interested.

FunkMetalBass 01-22-2010 12:35 PM

Chris, why'd you stop responding to emails? And where's my money, biatch?

funkyhoney 01-22-2010 12:35 PM

Phew. I am tired. Went to see my mates band and a few others tonight. Had a chat with a booking agent chick outside about us playing at the venue -which was awesome, btw- and we shared a joint. Awesome times.

fatbandit 01-22-2010 12:42 PM

Yeah, I've not been online much last couple of days, epic power cuts here - left a post a few pages back, but you didn't see it I guess, so yeah... reckon $100 will cover it for you dude? If not, let me know what will. Once we've sorted that, I'll paypal you and give the guy my address, and all should be well in the world!

Spaceman Spiff 01-22-2010 01:31 PM

Not to endlessly talk about it, but my guitars are so pwn. Last thing I need is to upgrade the amp and I'm done.

$97.95 is what the total comes to if my calculations are correct. No need to send any more than you have to.

I didn't see the post from earlier in the Casual...my bad.

I'm headed to the bank now to get the money order (my bill pay was having issues).
