Me and some guys I go to college with are doing a Rage Against The Machine covers band. As this seems to be the place for Rage fans, would any of you go and see a Rage covers band?Bearing in mind that we dont suck.
That would actually be quite cool to see. I actually would like to play bass in a RATM cover band sometime, just all around good music to play and listen to

DuncMaster 08-06-2005 06:00 AM

Yeah, I'd definately go to see a good RATM cover band.

rata 08-06-2005 07:29 AM

as far as being overrated is concern, i think they are... but im a big fan though...

Darkness 08-06-2005 10:28 AM

I wouldn't say that at all... They definatly deserve praise.

Steerpike 08-08-2005 09:01 PM

Well, I recently gave Rage another chance, and I have to say I'm more impressed than I thought I would be.

Darkness 08-08-2005 09:09 PM

Which album did you listen to?

Steerpike 08-08-2005 09:29 PM

To be honest, I didn't buy an album. I downloaded about a half-dozen tracks.

That's just what I do. I don't have money to make whimsical purchases on movies and music. I have a friend with a ton of movies I can watch to see if I'd like them, but with CDs...

So I download some tracks, and if I like what I hear, I go out and buy the albums and other merchandise.

Some mxer did a cover of Sleep Now in the Fire for the July Metal Competition. I'm downloading it now, but I have been told not to hope to be impressed. Thought I'd post it anyway.

If you're in a jolly mood, there are all of the entries. I strongly suggest checking out thisfilter's entry, and cjborton's entry. They covered a Meshuggah song and a Children of Bodom song, respectively.

What songs did you hear Steerpike? RATM immediately stuck to me.

Dr. Jake Destructo 08-08-2005 09:58 PM

Wow, this cover sounds it was recorded in one take, all with a computer microphone. :upset:

I don't know why but I like Evil Empire the best. It's more hip-hoppish than anything else they've done but I like that aspect about them the best besides the fact that they just can really jam.

Dr. Jake Destructo 08-08-2005 10:10 PM

It also could be the raw insanity radiated from every aspect of the album. Take for instance:

1. Morello really goes expirimental with the effects; More effects than on the S/T, but they're less refined than on Battle, creating tension.
2. Zack, or whoever mixed the album tweaked with the filter on the vocals to create an artificial distortion(very subtle, but noticable) to make the vocals sound dissonant, and in turn, more raw.
3. Timmy C. also used lots of disortion, wah, and occaisionally some whammy.

Evil Empire has grown on me recently, but it's still my least favorite of their albums, not to say it isn't good.

mcs 08-08-2005 10:17 PM

I love Renegades. Maybe mostly because it reminded me of all the oldskool rap songs they covered. Plus it got me listening to some Bob Dylan and stuff. Other than that the music is just amazing, I'd love it the same if it were all originals.

For all those reasons, it makes it my second favorite rage album.

Actually its probably tied with the self - titled... both are masterpeices.

A_Perfect_Tool 08-09-2005 01:33 AM

Rage are a great band, not very versitile though, never the less i got all their albums, but theres this one song that i'd really like to find out where and wot its purpose is. It's called Autologic, it sounds like an earlier recording, i downloaded it awhile back. Been lookin on the net and cant seem to findout wot album/movie it was made for, was it just a song like Revolution that they did with Tool? Any help or info would be good thanks

Darkness 08-09-2005 09:12 AM

It is, in fact, on their demo tape.

Freedom Fighter 08-09-2005 09:23 AM

^ Ya, its just a really old Rage demo

Biohazard\m/ 08-09-2005 10:22 AM

Has anybody heard the Outkast/RATM mix of Bombs over Baghdad? Its pretty cool if you like Outkast.

iBENezrocker 08-09-2005 01:42 PM

Rage cover band would be good, the one I saw the lead singer rapper person couldnt do Zach to save his life. It was them that got me into bass, so I'd love to be in a RATM cover/tribute band playing bass ( as i know how to play quite a few of their songs. First song I ever learnt was bombtrack ) that would kick ***

alytee123 08-09-2005 01:52 PM

One of my fave bands. Tom morellos a big inspiration to me on guitar. Hes got a great uniqute style and his ****s so fun to play.

They pretty much were originals aside from the lyrics and the basic song-structure. Of the originals I have heard none of them sound like the versions that Rage did.

I do it well enough apparently. Im not very good at judging myself! I used to be able to play most Rage songs on the bass, but my mates doing it in this band at the minute. It sounds **** good...the one gig we've done went down really well.

Dr. Jake Destructo 08-09-2005 03:40 PM

So has anyone heard the song Morello did for the soundtrack of Dodgeball: A true Underdog Story?

Shaft! 08-09-2005 03:42 PM

I really wish Morello had chilled with the effects on every album after the self titled. I have an idea of what they are supposed to represent, but it gives me headaches occasionally.
His work on the s/t was excellent, and Evil Empire is an alright C.D., but it's my least favorite. He did establish himself as skilled at the use of effects.
The palm scraping technique and the use of the allen wrench fascinates me the most, and for no other reason than it sounds different.
I dislike it when Tim uses as much distortion and tone as he did on, say, Live at the Grand Olympic. Powerful, yes, but I didn't like it. I'm probably just out of my mind.
Zack's vocals were appealing to me on Evil Empire because they did sound rather raw and it seemed to fit the idea of the album.
There is only one thing that bothers me, and that is that after Evil Empire, Tim's basswork became rather....repetitive in style. I'm not sure if anyone will agree with me, but his basslines just seemed to be repetitive to me.
This goes on with Audioslave, but it hit me first on Renegades and The Battle of Los Angeles.
Maybe I'm out of my mind there too.

chorbalan 08-09-2005 04:11 PM

I think Tims bass playing may have become repetitive at times, but it still has it's moments. I think it is because of the change of style that RATM went through and later Audioslave. I think he changed it so it goes better with the rest of the music. That's just my opinion though, it could be totally wrong.

Endless Obsession 08-09-2005 04:21 PM

Self titled was definitly their best, but theres no need to rip on those other classic albums.

Static 08-09-2005 09:52 PM
So has anyone heard the song Morello did for the soundtrack of Dodgeball: A true Underdog Story?
That song really does rule. Cool effects, but somewhat out of place in the movie. Still great, though.

Dr. Jake Destructo 08-09-2005 10:06 PM

You have it on your computer? YSI?

Biohazard\m/ 08-10-2005 08:20 AM

Inside Out

anyone Heard of Zack's hardcore band from the 90s? Everyone says its Zack's best work... but theres some other band from the later 90s with the same name...Inside Out only had one EP.

I bought their self titled CD today. I didn't think i would really be into them, but i'm falling in love with this album!

Don't forget that Renegades was a cover album so if you disliked the bass line it would have little / nothing to do with Tim. I didn't really notice a decline in his writing, I love his bass playing but it works alot better with RATM than Audioslave.

I guess I'm in a minority with liking Battle For L.A. Some of my favourite songs are on that album, ie. Ashes In The Fall, Calm Like A Bomb, Born Of A Broken Man, and a few others.

The first song I ever learned on drums was "Bulls on Parade" :thumb:

Evil Empire is probably my favorite cd of Rage....
