DeusExMachina 12-24-2004 10:34 PM

Yeah, I love the Moody Blues. But they don't do it so well with just instruments, in my opinion. At least, based on what I've heard of them.

Johnny B. Good 12-24-2004 10:36 PM

They have to use an orchestra a lot to help them whereas Floyd did it with their own instruments

DeusExMachina 12-24-2004 10:42 PM

Yeah. Either way, its good stuff. Moody Blues definitely don't get enough respect on these forums.

Anyways, back on topic...
Atom Heart Mother almost never gets mentioned in this thread. What's everyone's opinion of it? I think its really good, great instrumental stuff.

Johnny B. Good 12-24-2004 10:44 PM

It's very good but I here little about Piper at the Gates OF Dawn, or i'm ignorant

I was really close to buying Atom Heart Mother the other day.. but didn't... it'll be my next Floyd CD purchase though.

guitarjunkie1188 12-24-2004 10:53 PM

Riva 12-25-2004 01:28 AM

I watched it last night. :thumb:
Let us know how you like it.

Also relating to Pink Floyd, I got Ummagumma as one of my cds.

magicbus 12-25-2004 10:31 AM

Cd or DVD? And if Dvd, would you recommend it?

Kingofdudes 12-25-2004 10:46 AM
Just the CD version...I don't know about the DVD obviously, but for anyone who doesn't have the CD, and is thinking about buying a Floyd live album, I can definitely recommend this. I wasn't sure if it would really work without Waters, but it really does.
Pulse is great :thumb: The solo in Comfortably numb is orgasm inducing

For Christmas I got:

The Division Bell
Live at Pompeii
WYWH Shirt

I just might pick up the DVD version of Pulse sometime this week :thumb:

Echoes is amazing on Live at Pompeii

Having not bothered to read back further than this page, excuse me if I am repeating.

Considering the topic seems to be favourite tracks/albums, I feel obliged to bring up Wish You Were Here. This is a really incredible album. This album is the perfect follow up to Dark Side Of The Moon, providing the same genius - but in a totally different way. Dark Side dealt with life, death and madness - or at least this is my interpretation. Wish You Were Here deals with much the same issues, but instead of approaching them from an analytical perspective, making a commentary, the Floyd are conveying their actual experiences. The death (and mourning) of Syd Barret is, of course, the theme of the album at first glance, but upon closer inspection the same issues as Dark Side become clear - and the Floyd shows us how it is to actually experience life, in particular death - and the madness in between.

Listening to Wish You Were Here, you are transported into the minds of The Floyd, and it is described, in the most exquisite way, what it is like to live, feel death in your close vicinity, and witness the madness which fills the gap.

TheFinalCut 12-25-2004 11:30 AM
The death (and mourning) of Syd Barret
Umm...Syd Barrett Isn't Dead... And Wish You Were Here was talking about Syd Barrett's condition Mentally. The story goes that when Floyd was recording wish you were here, they saw Syd at the recording studio and he was in shambles, Shine on you Crazy Diamond, yea...

Do you have a link to view the WYWH shirt? I love WYWH... and I NEED to get Live at Pompeii. Now that I've got some christmas money, I'm gonna buy that and a couple of the Floyd albums I still don't have.

Distant Echoes 12-25-2004 11:51 AM

i got Live at pompeii and a HUGE DSOTM poster for the basement wall. It almost takes up the whole thing. I didnt watch the DVD yet, but i will when the company leaves.

magicbus 12-25-2004 12:22 PM

Ok for anybody who got the Pompeii DVD for christmas, please tell me if I should buy it. As I said before, I haven't been able to find the VHS yet, and might end up just buying the DVD. So tell me if its good or not. Thanks.

The DVD has the original version in its special features.

It is interesting to actually see them play "Careful with that axe, Eugene".

Prince of Darkness 12-25-2004 12:55 PM

David Gilmour is a much better singer than Roger Waters

Did Roger Waters sing on P.U.L.S.E.?

Prince of Darkness 12-25-2004 01:05 PM

Waters has an American Voice..........................

Have you heard his interviews? He sounds very british(You can even hear it in his singing)

DeusExMachina 12-25-2004 01:40 PM

Hahaha. That's a rad shirt! Did you take a picture of your reflection?

As for the voice thing, I've noticed that most British singers tend to sound American when singing. Maybe its just me, though. When they talk, you can definitely tell though.

Glitterati 12-25-2004 01:45 PM

I just got The Wall for Christmas, it's amazing.

ThrashHead 12-25-2004 01:59 PM

I heard Gilmour is going to be starting up a tour soon. Does anyone know if it's going to Floyd, or like a solo thing?

ShineOnYouCrazyDiamond 12-25-2004 02:27 PM

I jsut got a copy of one of floyd's early "the man and the journey" concerts today from 9/17/69. It's so incredible. I wonder why they didn't record all those songs in studio form.

Kingofdudes 12-25-2004 02:29 PM

Some songs it is easier to tell then others, like in Comfortably numb.

DeusExMachina 12-25-2004 04:47 PM

True. But in general, I think most British singers sound American.

ThrashHead 12-25-2004 05:47 PM

Alright thanks man.

DeusExMachina 12-25-2004 10:31 PM

Floyd tour = very unlikely.

Dr. Jake Destructo 12-26-2004 12:53 AM

I was wondering to my self today..How much does Gilmour sing? I haven't ever really tried to differentiate Water's and Gilmour's voices, so could someone mention the songs that Gilmour sings on?

 My mom got me that shirt for X-mas. Very retro.

I can't beleive she went into Hot Topic.

Riva 12-26-2004 02:53 AM

Gilmour sings on all of DSOT and PULSE. Roger wasn't with the band at the time.

Gilmour is also the doctor in Comfortably Numb.

And I am hesitant to wear a Floyd shirt, for fear of being labelled a poser. :upset:

I will be buying this shirt soon :thumb:

/sleep

Riva 12-26-2004 03:46 AM

Not if I buy it first, you bastard. :D

So, yeah, out of interest, if you had the money, who would want to visit me in Aus? :p

Tanglewood 12-26-2004 09:13 AM

Words cannot explain how good Pink Floyd are.
I'll rap my reply with 3 words: Freakin' well brilliant!

Dr. Jake Destructo 12-26-2004 10:50 AM

Now THAT is a badass shirt. And, for the record, I would visit you Riva. But then again, I don't have the money, so who cares. Would you visit me in..Mabton, Washington, United States. (Yes, it is the home of the first US mad cow case. :D )

Prince of Darkness 12-26-2004 11:13 AM

Is there a P.U.L.S.E DVD?

DeusExMachina 12-26-2004 11:14 AM

Riva, I thought Waters was the doctor in CN? Isn't Gilmour doing the chorus, "there is no pain you are receding" and all that jazz? Oh, and I would definitely visit you if I had the cash. And I am so going to get that t-shirt. My god. I wants it. It's my precious.

Kombucha Mushroom Mofo, is that at all near Seattle? I used to live in Seattle, just moved out a couple months ago.

Prince of Darkness 12-26-2004 11:20 AM

The Wall is a Great Album, I love it. But If Gilmour was singing on it, it would be ten times better. Agree?

lunch998 12-26-2004 11:24 AM

Disagree, Waters voice better fits the cynical, depressing, dark nature of the album. The combination of their voices is well done, but you need both of them.

Broken Arrow 12-26-2004 11:30 AM
Disagree, Waters voice better fits the cynical, depressing, dark nature of the album. The combination of their voices is well done, but you need both of them.
I agree. Rogers voice is so much better for the mood of the album. The parts where Gilmour sings his voice fits the mood better.
