The thing is, from a normal standpoint it isn't out of place, I agree with everything you said. However, when I'm listening to the album I kind of get the mindset of being in a dark, gloomy swamp-like forest. This is simply because of the albums title. Despite whether or not the name had anything to do with the songs' sounds, all the other ones work with that theme for me except Bleak. It was more of a personal critique rather than a general one, but I figured I'd bring it up just to see if anyone else had that feeling going.

Eh, I disagree even with that. "The Funeral Portrait," for example, calls to mind a snowy landscape with a raging inferno. "Harvest" is a warm song, with more oranges and light browns than greys or blacks.

Also, The Leper Affinity brings up a snow image (lost are days of spring...your gaze covered in virgin snow)

I think Mike is talking about a wide array of emotions and is associating them with seasons. He does this a lot, especially on ****ation with Summer. Like in "In My Time of Need"...Summer is miles miles away and in Death Whispered..."Out on the road, fireflies circing", which is in summer.

I think that's just Mike style...I jumped back in this, so if someone already said this...my bad
is that the one where they start with Godhead's lament?
No, Still Life starts with The Moor. Godhead's Lament is the second song...The Moor = A mind****...

then, comes Benighted...has to be one of the most beautiful songs ever!

ArcLite 02-03-2005 02:03 AM

Like I said fellas, its just what I feel when I listen to it, nothing more. But at least give me that BWP, the song, gives a little dark forest vibe (or maybe not).

More Swampish...because I think it shows someone overcoming and becoming powerful and leaving his problems behind...that's my interepation

opeth_oasis 02-03-2005 02:06 AM

i think it does, but thats only my thought on the song

Yeah in one of my previous posts I had the swamp element there too.
anyone know where i can get an Opeth shirt in Australia, i have one but i want a still life or blackwater park one, anyone know?
I've seen them online at Sanity.com, so they could probably get them in store for you. Although, I wouldn't buy from them, apparently their shirts a dodgy, and I just don't like Sanity.

opeth_oasis 02-03-2005 03:47 AM

ok, im going to buy one from melbourne, blackwater park looks good.

He's talking about on the streamed concert from the link.

When you find some tell me. I got a deliverance shirt from Smoke Dreams, it was the last one, apart from the ones with old style logo, which I don't like that much. I also tried Metal Mayhem but they only had long sleeves (and a lot of them, which pissed me off).

 i love it, shall be done,

and people, is Epilogue a good song to do by yourself to show your music teacher an understanding and a small repertoire of guitar? Most of the stuff i listen to/play is heavier and over 11 min long. So i was thinking epilogue as a nice little thing for music

the lyrics of 'death whispered a lullaby' are by Steven Wilson.

but nonetheless I agree with you that Mikeal's lyrics often talk about seasons to express his feelings and emotions.

he's one of my favorite lyricists together with MJK

musicnerd 02-04-2005 02:25 PM

Yeah, The Leper Affinity does have a "wintery" and cold feeling to it. "We entered Winter once again..." Come to think of it Ivortheenginedriver, Mikael does use seasons alot. Although, I didnt' notice it much, if at all, on Deliverance. Speaking of Deliverance. I know the title track is about a guy who drowns a woman and then realizes he'd lost is salvation, or "deliverance". Does anyone think there is meaning below the surface, like most Opeth songs? peace, Chris

I have been listening to Opeth for about a year now, but I have a bit of a n00bish question. What is "master's apprentice" about?

I know! I like Steven Wilson, though I wish he would stop producing Opeth's albums, he's done his part, now they need to expand and grow without him.
*I love PT, man, glad to see someone else like them as well.

I think we all have associations with weather and seasons. Its a staple of writing, you know, when someone says its raining in a song, usually means something isn't right. I think Mike is just using his prog roots and taking this mantra and running with it.

Personally, I agree, MJK, Mike and Brandon from Incubus are my favorite lyricists (along with Dream Theater and PT)...Mike's lyrics are amazing, especially on The Drapery Falls. God, that song is an orgasm!

it seems to have a bit of a desert theme, but it is not very clear. Masters Apprentices has my favourite ever clean vocal part.

opeth_oasis 02-05-2005 12:15 AM

i remember passing a site that showed the covers to opeth singles, does anyone know the site? cheers

you have some awesome taste for music :thumb:
and I like your approch of looking at lyrics.

have some rep+ man!

grtz from a fellow Opeth, Porcupine tree, Tool and DT fan ;)

ps.
are you going to any of the PT concerts?

Yeah, I love the clean part almost as much as I love how it goes back into the heavy part. That just blew me away.

what I admire so much about Opeth is:

they can blend in so many different parts.
try this:

take along song of them (almost any :p)
which has both clean an growling parts (almost any :p)
and take four short sections of the song.

one clean singing part
one growling part
one accoustic (interlude) part
and 1 heavy riff

keep those sections in your head, and then trry imaging how you could put all of these so different song parts togeher in one song, I fail at that.
and thaen I listen to the song in it's whole, and realize how brilliantly it's done.
transiton's from DT growls to the most beautyfull clean vocal parts in 5 seconds.
Mikael is awesome :thumb:

I will try...I live in Arkansas, its hard to get close to anywhere where PT would play. I think their new album comes out in March? So, I'm hoping Opeth tours with them, like they did for In Absentia.

Also, I heard Mike plays guitar on a track for the new PT album...also, Steve ripped off the Face of Melinda riff in Prodigal...in case anyone hadn't seen that.

Thanks though man! I love seeing people who love PT, DT, Tool and Opeth!...those 4 are probably my favorite bands of all time! :)

You rock, dude :thumb:

that middle part reeks of Steve Wilson and you can hear him harmonizing with Mike on the "Ahhh" part...to me, its one of my favorite

I think my favorite soft part in an Opeth song might be on Still Life with The Moor and Godhead's Lament (Thought I could not leave this place on this immient day...god I love that part)

opeth_oasis 02-05-2005 06:52 PM

yeah steven wilson can sing bloody high, check out how high he sings in the backing vocals in harvest

Seeing as the thread I made on this got ignored, a link to a site with spoilers of the new Porcupine Tree album, which has memebers of the Band OPETH appearing on it.

Opeth rox!

Swiftystrick 02-06-2005 12:09 AM

Say hello to Opeth's newest fan!!
Oh god. I can't believe I have been missing out on this band.
I agree with you Flynn, they CERTAINLY do deserve their own genre IMO as well. :thumb:
I love how several Opeth songs began with hell-raising riffs then tranquilize you with beautiful acoustic then raises your sedated body back with a vengeance(prime example, Masters Apprentice.)
I am in love with this band(is that normal?). I only own Deliverance and Blackwater Park but the entire collection is soon to be in my possession.
phew...I'm hyperventilating.
lol

Oh don't mind this offset post...I had skipped about 30 pages.
