Well i'm happy for you that you like those bands, and because just about everything you say if it has your opinion in it there's a problem. I could say Metalica, not sure if there's one or two Ls, is power metal and someone would come back with a negative response so i'm just not going to.
... What? I didn't understand one bit of that rant.

IheartSP 07-14-2005 11:43 PM

lol no Metallica is not powermetal, I'd explain it but I think Steerpike could do a better job cause I'm not in the mood.

Steerpike 07-14-2005 11:45 PM
Hmm after looking at the archive for wuthering heights they look quite appealing, any songs i should check out?
Depends. The latest album has a different vocalist, though most of the mp3s I've *ahem* acquired are off of the new album with Nils Andersson on vocals. Nils is like a folk-y, Celtic/Danish version of Dio.

IheartSP 07-14-2005 11:46 PM

Hmm how would you describe their folk elements. I'm a huge Wintersun fan and they have folk and power metal elements, I'm wondering if this is anything like that but with clean vocals.

Steerpike 07-14-2005 11:47 PM

Their folk elements are more Celtic than Scandinavian. They have a very bardic sound like Blind Guardian.

IheartSP 07-14-2005 11:49 PM

Hmm I enjoy Blind Guardian's bardic sound, so I think I'll give Wuthering Heights a listen tomorrow

Steerpike 07-14-2005 11:49 PM

I can upload one of my favorite tracks for you.

IheartSP 07-14-2005 11:50 PM

Go for it but I don't think I'll listen tonight cause I'm pretty tired

Thanks a lot, I'll get back to you on how it is

Steerpike 07-15-2005 12:01 AM

I've finally decoded your rant, and here's my rebuttal.
Well i'm happy for you that you like those bands, and because just about everything you say if it has your opinion in it there's a problem.
I think you're being a little too defensive. Are you honestly that afraid of people disagreeing with you?
I could say Metalica, not sure if there's one or two Ls, is power metal and someone would come back with a negative response so i'm just not going to.
Well, duh there'd be a negative response. Metallica is not, nor have they ever been power metal. So naturally is you named them as a power metal band, fans of the genre would be displeased.

Power metal is defined by bombast and melodrama. It requires a high degree of musicianship because of the various songwriting styles it can encompass. The melody section is always prominent and tight, and the rhythm section is driving and loud, often with a lot of double-bass drumming. Vocalists tend ot have classical and threatrical training to develop belting tones and vibrato.

Within power metal, there are a lot of different bands and styles. Blind Guardian and Savatage are radically different, for example. And Gamma Ray is worlds apart from Wuthering Heights.

they sound great, I'll DL that song tonight

This is a7x123, replying to steerpike. Because since everyone has argued against my views in all of my threads I got banned and I think it's b/s. Last thread I put out was for my friend about the band name and I got in trouble for it but there are like 3 or 4 others that have been on for awhile and they're not banned. I guess I got chosen cause everyone else has a problem with my opinion. I didn't try to argue either all I asked is if Insignia is a good name and everyone had to be stupid about it. Well I'm banned now so it doesn't matter anymore. Maybe everyone should just listen to others opinions instead of getting pissed about it. That's all. :)

IheartSP 07-15-2005 01:34 PM

Wow Steerpike this Wuthering Heights is great! I love the folk melodies mixed with the distortion guitar. The singing is good too. It's my kinda powermetal, I'm not into stuff thats really cheesy, I can't stand Dragonforce and I like Stratovarius but only the non-cheesy stuff, this isn't like that at all though.

Stoic 07-15-2005 02:24 PM

I downloaded this track too. It's indeed bardic in the Blind Guardian way and I love it. I was kind of discouraged about this band due to some reviews on metal-archives and some song I had heard a while ago and dint like (again I picked the wrong song I suppose, dont ask I dont remember!). But this is brilliant, it has converted me :)

I'm not big of fan of cheesy power either. Have you checked Tad Morose, Persuader, Slough Feg and Sabaton yet? If not I think you'll like them.

Get over yourself. You didn't listen to the rules, so you got banned. That's all there is to it. It has absolutely nothing to do with your opinions.

Anyway, I had a feeling you guys would like this. Wuthering Heights is also in the running for next week's spotlight, so if you want to hear more of them, you know who to vote for.

exup 07-15-2005 05:02 PM

dragonforce is cool
i like iron maiden too

CaptainWaits 07-15-2005 06:52 PM

Also, today I just found out Luca Turilla has his own band other than Rhapsody. I listened to the album of his I saw, and it was great, just my money was being spent on something else (Hatebreeder).

I haven't heard much of Luca's band, so what could anybody tell me?? Does he compare to Rhapsody??

RiceMonster 07-15-2005 06:54 PM

Yeah I was wondering the same thing. From what I've read on metal-archives, Rhapsody is better, but hey you never know.

black\m/metal 07-15-2005 06:57 PM

That Wuthering Heights song is cool, not quite my form of powermetal, but i still thought it was cool and respect the music.

Tillius 07-16-2005 12:44 AM

I listened just fine to the rules I didn't post stuff against it. What I got kicked out for is supposedly starting flairs/arguments. I didn't start any arguments everyone else did to everything I said. It's not worth being in these forums anyways, If you can get kicked out for asking what a good band name is then that's just stupid. I really don't see what the big deal is about it. If you can answer that then do so please cause I would really like to know why that starts so many arguments.

Tillius 07-16-2005 12:46 AM

By the way it wasn't about my opinions it was about everyone getting pissed about what I had to say.

Hells Bells 07-16-2005 01:26 AM
Nice, another power metal thread. :thumb:
So any of you guys going to PowerProg V later this year?
Where is it gonna be? Cause I'm stuck in Canada...

Hells Bells 07-16-2005 01:34 AM

Thanks Steerpike for interoducing us to yet antother great band :thumb:

Definitely a folk element, not only the lyrics, but also the instrumental and vocal styles. I woulddn't be able to say about celtic music cause I don't know too much about it. blah I"ll comment oin this when I'm more sober.

CaptainWaits 07-16-2005 02:26 AM

You'll never get a serious answer to a thread like that. You're better off asking people whose opinions you know can trust. The only reason I occassionally ask for opinions of my writing and things like that in the community thread is because I've been here so long and am on friendly terms with the regulars. Several of them, I respect and value their opinions. You're a newbie. You need more time to build up a proper reputation.

Furthermore, this is the internet. People are going to be jokesters, opinionated, elitist, rude, stuck-up, or any combination there-of, just like real life. Either learn to deal with that, or leave the internet entirely.

Sorry, but I can't be any more blunt with you, because that's the short and long of it. If you're not mature enough to handle the idea that not everyone around here is as saintly Mother Teresa, you're too naive to be using the internet.

Stick around if you think you can deal with the occassional argument. This place is a great resource for exposing yourself to new music. But if you can't cope, leave and save yourself the headache.

Anyway, your ban should be lifted soon. It was probably only 24 hours and 3 days tops. The mods are getting very strict around here lately because of how many people have been getting out of control this summer. They need to tighten things up to restore order.

I'd like to take credit for this, but Frailandbedazzled deserves the credit. He mentioned Wuthering Heights to us back in the fall, and I've been trying desperately to find some of their work ever since. It finally paid off.

Stoic 07-16-2005 08:42 AM

Hey Steerpike, I'm listening to this Tree song by Wuthering Heights again. I get the same feeling Nightfall by Blind Guardian gives me and I love it! Any other song suggestions (I dont want to pick the wrong song again)? How about their albums, what's their best one?

Steerpike 07-16-2005 09:10 AM

Of the stuff I've heard, I really think Far Beyond the Madding Crowd is their best album to date. Try to track down the Longing for the Woods trilogy off that album. Pure quality.

Their earlier albums are more proggy, but FBTMC is where the power/folk elements really stand out.

Lord Abortion 07-16-2005 09:24 AM

I really like that wuthering heights song and can see the BG comparison fitting well

looking forward to them surely being in the spotlight next month...

NewSyn 07-16-2005 09:56 AM

I'm here to say sorry if I seemed to defensive I just didn't want to answer most of the questions cause if I did there was someone to talk crap to back it up, and that had already happened to me alot before, I guess cause i'm a newbie and I didn't want to get banned. So sorry, and thanks for letting me know steerpike that the ban could be lifted, still isn't but atleast I know. Well hopefully it will It's been about two days.

NewSyn 07-16-2005 09:57 AM

I'm just going to keep using this screen name anyways, I like it better. This is a7x123.

It's water under the bridge now, but you have to remember not to be so defensive. You have to be ready to admit you're wrong when proven so and realize that there are going to be arguments here.

Few people will debate that Avenged Sevenfold's new album made a distinct shift toward power metal, but you really need to pay attention to the others here to fully understand the genre. Trust me, it really pays to listen around here and not act defensive when someone contradicts a statement you made.

NewSyn 07-16-2005 10:03 AM

Okay cool. :thumb: Now what is the folk metal mix stuff you have been talking about. Not sure of it never heard of a mix like that.

This dowload should still be good. Give it a listen and tell us what you think. It's a mixture of power metal, some prog, and Celtic folk music.

NewSyn 07-16-2005 10:06 AM

Steerpike, howcome you avatar is bigger than everyone else's. I want to put a custom one in but if I make it too small it looks like crap.

Steerpike 07-16-2005 10:07 AM

Technically it isn't. I cropped the edges off in Photoshop to make it fit the absolute maximum size permitted.

NewSyn 07-16-2005 10:09 AM

have to wait for the download

Steerpike 07-16-2005 10:10 AM

Yeah, YSI has been kind of slow lately. Take your time.

You could also win the drum off in the Drum section of the site. The winner gets a big avatar.
