Love this.
do you want speakers to be compatible with your computer and a home theatre system??

or did you mean speakers that are generally for music production but are also good "hi-fi" speakers and will sound good with movies?
I can only speak from personal experience but I use my monitors for tv programs and gaming and everything and I'm quite happy with it.

guitarbaz 06-15-2011 03:56 AM

all depends just how cash you have to spend.

i love my hifi (monitor audio and arcam stuff) but to convert it to an A/V system would cost me a fortune to keep the quality.

so, i too use my rockit powered monitors if i want to watch some music dvd's and they sound cool.

that said, wor lass's old man has just spent about 5k on a full surround system with monitor audio speaker and onkyo amp. sounds fucking amazing but quite a price too.

SugarCoatedSour 06-15-2011 08:03 AM

I don't watch cable/sat tv. My pc's permanent monitor is my TV, and my ps3 and all my systems are plugged in as well. So I want a system (surround) to be able to easily switch over for when I'm using pc to when I'm gaming and watching stuff on my ps3. I'd like to use DAWs and recording programs with computer....might get into protools in time.

I think any audio interface with an optical out would get you to the surround system. But unless you get like a Genelec 5.1 system, or like 5 of the Mackie Hr824's and a sub, or 5 of some small decent monitor and a sub it's probably not going to be good for mixing.

Finding a surround receiver that outputs analog at anything more than RCA standard would be hard.

SugarCoatedSour 06-15-2011 12:17 PM

I'll have to read into some of those terms. I'm at a research stage and need to come to know the basic types of configurations. What does a good monitor setup usually consist of?

Kuffuffled 06-15-2011 02:13 PM

2 full range speakers. If you have a sub it needs to be positioned well. Mostly for checking lower frequencies

SugarCoatedSour 06-15-2011 02:16 PM

I could do without surround sound....but having several speakers is nice. However if I need a mainstay then.....2 monitors would work as a good go between? What do I need to look for in the way of receiver or whatever other platform.

Okay so basically, ADAT, or optical out/in is how 5.1 formats are transmitted. Your PS3 should have one at the back. HDMI can also transmit 5.1. But for example with my PS3 I use the HDMI to transmit the video and then the optical to go to my stereo (I ditched the 5.1 because hardly anything I watch is ever in true 5.1 and wires are ugly. And I don't care if it's down mixed.)

TBH I'd keep everything in plain stereo. Almost everything is Stereo usually. And I prefer things coming from in front from behind as well. Kinda distracting to be honest. But that's personal taste.

So your setup would consist of an Audio interface, I recommend the Echo Audiofire8. It's got heaps of connectivity, it's cheap, and for recording it has two 'okay' preamps. The converters are perfectly adequate.

You could do a 5.1 thing out from that Echo Audiofire8, it has 8 analog outs, but then your 5.1 setup would need to be very expensive, most cheaper setups only have RCA inputs/outputs. The Echo also has digital out so you could configure it to go digitally to your 5.1 receiver (I dunno if that's what you call it, but basically the thing you put CD's in etc) and then it would output analog signal to your speakers.

A wireless 5.1 system is the way to go. But to find one that would work for mixing audio and be cheap would be impossible.

Thanks for the infoz and suggests. I shall be doing some reading when I get back from my lesson tonight. Thanks again, be back soon.

ITT Knifeboy contributes nothing and pipes in when the argument is over to try serve a personal vendetta against someone who knows more than him.

Or sorry is that too condescending for you?

personal vendetta against someone i've never communicated with before ok

you do know way more than me about mixing that's for sure. Less about language though apparently

Convectuoso 06-16-2011 03:22 PM

Lol I recall a post sometime where we had beef, meh who cares.

I actually have to agree with you. Since highschool finished I stopped reading for pleasure and ever since I've definitely noticed a decline in my vocabulary, spelling and general knowledge of the English language. :(

That's what I get for only reading Sound on Sound and audio related books...

SugarCoatedSour 06-16-2011 03:31 PM

jeez way to be selfconscious.

And in other news, I just installed Logic Pro on me Mac :)

Just have to get all the loops on the external hard drive now, all 40-odd gig of them....

So, now to learn how use it. Fairly au fait with cubase studio, so how hard can it be eh...
