Yeah, I agree they are heavy songs, but in a way, one can still find some other form of emotion through those songs. ex. the demise part in when, the run away part in demon etc.
Wheres in BWP, songs like BWP and The Funeral Portrait only bring forth agression. Even The leper affinity. ps gatta go . flying back to SA now and will only be back tomorrow. cheers good talking. |
MAYH might not be the most easily recongnized Opeth album, but it was an important one in their career. I think MAYH turned and put Opeth on the track of making such great albums like Still Life (my absolute favorite)and Blackwater Park, which makes MAYH such a great album, it's got all the great elements of progression and "Opethiness" in it, and from that album, the band just got better at what they did... I'm not saying MAYH is horrible, quite the contrary. With songs like April Ethereal, When, and Demon of the Fall.... I also really like Madrigal and The Amen Corner, in fact The Amen Corner is probably my favorite song off the album, following with April Ethereal and Demon of the Fall. Another worthy mention is the last song, "Epilogue". Alot and alot of emotion coming from Mikael's guitar in that song. Overall amazing album.... and it needs to be noticed more :thumb:

exactly :thumb: i think they get better with every album with the exception of ****ation, its a awesome album don't get me wrong but i think the production wasn't to good, i hate the way Ending Credits starts out and it just doesn't have the right feeling overall |
Ending Credits kinda starts out weird, and gets very reppetative, but it's freaking awesome..... and I totally agree with teh My Arms Your Herse statement, it is very very good, seriously, when I heard April Earthreal for the first time, I didn't know what to think.
|
I thought Ending Credits was pretty cool, and I loved Damnation, although it was just experimentation, it proves to me that Opeth can experiment very well...
|
ya the song rules but the way it fades in is what i hate, it is a awesome record though

Could anyone tell me the setlist of this? |
I've got 56k, so Godhead's Lament is as far as I get. :upset:
EDIT: I'll download it tonight and have an answer tomorrow, if someone doesnt beat me to it. |
i dont care much for opeth but Damnation is an awesome album. Windowpane is one of my favorite songs. For that album I respect Opeth much.
|
hmm, give Opeth another chance, try the Still Life album, i think it will change you. It does take time to get used to Mikael's growls. If your not a fan of Death metal, Mikael's growls are the only ones you should be able to take, they really do grow on you, just give it a chance :thumb:

i just bought orchid today, how bloody awesome is the intro to The Apostle in Triumph? Its just a fabulous record, its also got a bonus track, Into The Frost of Winter. Very Cool!!! Oh and just a question, how is the violin done in The Apostle in Truimph and Black Rose Immortal?

Yes im not much of a death metal fan, not as much as some other kinds of music but Mikael's growls really dont bother me, i like them alot. The growls have changed alot since Orchid, but are still great. |

Mikael hits that 'sky' note better than Dianno imo.
thats because Mikael is a much better singer than Dianno. I love Iron Maiden, but when Dianno was there instead of the mighty Bruce Dickinson, I lost alot of my love for them. Thats one of the reasons I found Opeth, i was looking for a band to replace Maiden, and that was them. However Dickinson is back now, so i love them again. |

You're confusing Dianno with Bailey. Paul Di'anno was their first singer, he's on the first two albums. Then Dickison came along, and left after Fear of the Dark. Then they got Blaze Bailey, who is actually a good singer but got flack because really, you can't replace Dickinson. And then Dickinson came back for Brave New World.
Oh and just a question, how is the violin done in The Apostle in Truimph and Black Rose Immortal?
It's just a clean guitar with quick little volume swells (so you don't hear the actual picking, but rather just the note) to give it a violin-esque bowed sound. |

You have to find a good streaming video capturer. If you find one, tell me. |
ahh so i am, Dianno was great, but IMO Bailey was where Iron Maiden went to an all time low

wow how clever |
Can any of you guys suggest and good Opeth forums with reliable info? I tried searching for some but to no avail. Anybody know of any?
He mentions Melinda in 3 songs on Still Life...I am curious who she is and what the concept of that LP was to her.
The Moor ..."Melinda is the reason why I've come." Serenity Painted Death ..."Melinda reflected in shafts..." Face of Melinda ...Pretty explanitory lol...
This is a very belated response, but he named his daughter Melinda. Maybe thats the reason? |

Yeah, Ill agree Opeth intimedated me for a while when I was first introduced to them. I never used to listen to Death Metal, why start now I thought. Me and my brother always used to laugh at the Death vocals and growls. But the first word in becoming a fan is persiverance! In fact, you can get into any kind of music if this used properly. Seriously, If you hate Black Metal, and you start listening to it 2 times a day, I can give you save assurance that its going to start to grow on you. Thats why im alwys hesistant to what I listen to. I dont like Punk, I dont listen to it. I dont like Black Metal, I stay away from it. But this is a bit besides the point...SOZ! The point is, if you want to experience something different like Opeth, just listen to it every day. The one thing that ALWAYS pushes people away is the vocals. Unconditioned people just arent used to these types of growls and vox's. To start to like a band you must give it a chance, but also, you must give it time to grow. One day you might pick up on something new in a song. That last bit in Wreath. The Demise part in When. The last part in Funeral Portrait. The ''aah'' middle part in White Cluster. Its these type of things that lure you in, and is exactly what Opeth are acclaimed for. Their ability to step over boundries set by millions of clone metal bands, and not be afraid to show their softer side, in a metal song. |
^^ I'm pretty sure that question was already answered in this thread, but no, that is definately not the reason.
EDIT: to amostbitterseason |
This is a very belated response, but he named his daughter Melinda. Maybe thats the reason?
Still Life is a concept album telling the story of a man who has returned to a town for the woman he loves, who is named Melinda. That explains her name in those songs. |

I see. Thank you for clarifying that. BTW, I asked this before but no one has answered yet. Anyone know of any good Opeth forums? |
