Hm. Currently listening to "The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner".

Excellent Maiden song, and proof that Iron Maiden can make a truly epic song out of any topic whatsoever! :D
any topic in the world my seldom-posting friend, any in the world

we could open this to debate actually, what is the wierdest song topic maiden have ever done? answers on a postcard to:

Well, they've done Genghis Khan, Alexander The Great, a Coleridge poem (Rime of the Ancient Mariner), Dune (against Frank Herbert's permission), and the British Air Force in WWII even more than Roger Waters-era Pink Floyd..,

And yet I'd still have to say the Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner is the wierdest lyrical topic they've ever made into an epic song.

Lord Abortion 07-16-2005 12:56 PM

The Dune thing was a bastard, Steve rang Herbert's publisher and If memory serves, he said: "sorry, Frank herbert doesn't like Rock bands, especially not bands like Iron Maiden"
apparently they were going to call the song Dune and have a spoken word quote at the start aswell. The book is fantastic though...

Maveryck 07-16-2005 01:01 PM
"No. Because Frank Herbert doesn't like rock bands, particularly heavy rock bands, and especially rock bands like Iron Maiden".
That's probably the most uncharitable statement ever... but it's balanced out by Patrick McGoohan's willingness to co-operate with Iron Maiden regarding the song 'The Prisoner':
The conversation between McGoohan and Smallwood allegedly went:

McGoohan: "What did you say the name of the band was again?"
Smallwood: "Iron Maiden"
McGoohan: "A rock band, you say... do it!"
(quotes from Wikipedia, controversy from Iron Maiden )

Lord Abortion 07-16-2005 01:42 PM

my quote was off the top of my head and stems from Run to the hills- the official biography of Iron Maiden. the quote was a bit off, I couldn't be arsed to hunt it out and check :p
that book is essential for ANY maiden fan
I just realised that the lyrics to devil on a hog are about leaving maiden in 93...

"I used to sit at god's right hand, but I quit that show to do my one night stand"

we all know that 'arry is God, don't we kids?

There's a Book called Loneliness of the Long Distance runner, so I think it's based off that.

the_uber_penguin 07-17-2005 02:51 PM

I think Dream Of Mirrors is their wierdest song lyrically.

Oh, and I don't actually get what anybody does that's evil in "The evil that men do"....as far as I can tell its just about someone sleeping with someone he shouldn't have.

It's got something to do with the Concept of the Album.

I believe it's to do with the Conception of the 7th Son of a 7th Son.

Lord Abortion 07-17-2005 03:02 PM

you'd think there would be 7 songs on 7th son like...

How many songs are on it?

ashman 07-17-2005 03:05 PM

There's 8, but no one can really guess what's it's about. It is their 7th album though

The weirdest Maiden song is Quest for Fire, because it's historically inaccurate. Most of their stuff is fairly authentic, or at least the imagery makes up for it. But having dinosaurs and cavemen living together in a song that's also pretty boring by Maiden standards is just criminal.

ashman 07-17-2005 03:35 PM

Wasn't the inspiration for that from one of those old dinosaur films?

it's amusing though...
It sounds like it was inspired by something like that... there must be a similar book or film...

the_uber_penguin 07-18-2005 04:23 AM

Quest for Fire is a 1981 film.

Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner is one of my favourite songs off of Somewhere in Time, which is incidentally one of my favourite Maiden CDs. Aaaand, my girlfriend bought it for me!

As of right now, I am rocking out to Piece of Mind, which I think is Maiden's best album. Man, Where Eagles Dare is such an awesome track.
