Studio isn't the time to be a dick about your tone settings. I always set my amp up a particular way when I'm rehearsing or gigging, and so last time I went into studio to track bass parts for an album, I set my amp up the same way. The studio bloke had me play a bit, then changed the settings completely, set it up in ways I'd never have even considered setting it too, and I could have said "Hey man, I already had my settings done" and been difficult but I just kept my mouth shut and let him do it, because it's his environment and he knows what he's doing. I was still freaked out by the positions of the dials every time I looked at them, but damned if it didn't sound **** hot into the microphones and in the control room. So the moral of the story is, when someone knows what they're doing you let them do it.

I agree. Our second guitarist uses a Fender DeVille and a Fender Strat when he plays. Sounds all fine and dandy, except that he and I are treading on the exact same frequencies, so when you throw the two together with the other guitar and the drummer, he is completely lost in the mix. We are going to adjust his sound and re-record, and then I'll adjust mine accordingly for the recordings. |
lmao
people hate what i say about bass guitar because it invalidates their obsession and the reason i hate said obsession is because it creates fragmented thinking IE people making music entirely from the perspective of one instrument and that problem is AMPLIFIED in this case because the instrument their using isn't a particularly demanding or versatile one (bass guitar) so it makes everything suck also producers need to be able to learn to work with what they have that guy was an idiot and not very creative if he couldn't use your bass tone the way it is i learn to work with what i have and what i have is a crappy OLP guitar and a schecter bass so i make grainy gross distorted beats and then my digitized, fuzzy, 20 dollar guitar tone seems to "work" so saying your tone "doesnt work" uhh its bad production really sorry you had to endure that
Or you could consider that maybe once in a while the stuff you say is stupid? No, it couldn't be that |
oh shut up jcs
you never have a single worthwhile thing to say ever the ONLY thing you do, in true parasite fashion, is condescend and the hilarity is you have nothing to be condescending about lmao no achievements nothing to show you make nothing you edit nothing you really play nothing in anyway that means anything but still you just think your opinion matters lmao it doesnt mine probably doesnt either but the difference that i just illustrated is: i actually do things |

when did you both start typing in the same format
with double spacing and very few punctuation marks or capital letters it's just starting to seem strange actually i think we should all do it now when read in a hurry the entire thread will seem like a poem |
umm no, sir, all i do is not condescend
i make music with people from this forum all the time you dont cuz 1) you dont know how 2) youre a douche |
i don't see a resolution for this on the horizon

i'm no expert but making music is a reasonably important part of being a musician
or maybe you guys aren't even talking about music i don't know |
gaslight is ****ing adorable
|
i have absolutely no idea how to react to that
haha |
Raayl, are different microphones suited for different voices? When we recorded vocals with my Oktava MK-319, Stephanie's vocals came through wonderfully, but mine seemed to be quite lacking in the lower frequencies and didn't sound nearly as full.
|
Not to butt in but yeah, different microphones are suited (in fact, designed) for different kinds of sound sources as you know, and there's enough variation between different human voices that entirely different microphones are considered ideal for different vocal ranges and styles.
I can't actually tell you what mics are good for what though. |
Maybe the key is in the mic preamp. Or maybe the key is to get a new mic for my vocals, like this one: http://www.zzounds.com/item--MSEMXLV67G

A good engineer should have several mics at hand and know which one works best for which situation.
|
i really dont know enough about it
but it probably has way less to do with the mic and way more to do with the way youre recording, singing, and your technique |
I love the Internet. You can find everything.

i found jesus on the internet. i was like yo dude i got all this water YA KNOW WHAT IM SAYIN, and shabamallama, hella wine. he hooked it up.

It's just a friend of ours that happened to graduate from an audio engineering trade school in state. He's slowly building his collection of equipment, but for $100 to record and mix, we can make do with the less-than-profession studio set up we have going on.
i really dont know enough about it but it probably has way less to do with the mic and way more to do with the way youre recording, singing, and your technique
We're recording in a 4x4 booth that we made of mattresses. I know that inhibits the low end from coming through quite as well, but it still seems excessive. I'll have to play around with it more. yeah dudes, singing is all about the feeling. if your not feeling it, its gonna sound like doodoo.
http://www.smbc-comics.com
those are pretty good man |
Can't wait for Dinosaur Jr tomorrow night. It's going to be an awesome show.

I'm trying to decide if I want to shell out $26 to see Owen Pallett in a couple of weeks.
i really dont know enough about it
but it probably has way less to do with the mic and way more to do with the way youre recording, singing, and your technique
It has EVERYTHING to do with the mic. Do some research on polar patterns, this makes a huge difference in low end response. I suggest your singer gets to know microphones like the back of her hand so she can develop good microphone technique and adapt to the microphone available. For example if you're using a large diaphragm condenser mic with a carioid or wide cardiod polar pattern, she can increase her low frequency response by simly getting close to the mic. The Oktava looks like it should record vocals fine. Also, even though that 4x4 room is designed to absorb low frequencies. It won't make one iota of difference on vocals. Unless idk, she's singing at the wall with a mic behind her  Also #2: It's more to do with the mic pre's that the microphone is connected to rather than the pre amp in the mic (it matters too, but not as much). Like, a Class A mic pre, like in many of the presonus interfaces, will eat the **** out of your typical interfaces pre amps. What's your friend using as an audio interface? |
