It maybe true, with maynard you never know!

Doomed To Crumble 06-23-2005 05:02 PM

Has anybody ever gotten into the meaning behind the grudge, it has alot to do with greek mythology.

Mr Herb 06-23-2005 05:03 PM

I think the producer may have asked for a heavier album since nu-metal was still big. So they gave him a song with screaming in it.

Darkness 06-23-2005 05:04 PM

I also think the patient is very sad.

BlindWriting 06-23-2005 05:07 PM

Undertow was definitely the darkest. Opiate had the heaviest material. Aenima was angry, but with a lot of raw emotion as opposed to just senseless blaring.

Mr Herb 06-23-2005 05:16 PM

And tool will do what the producer tells em too? perhaps. Their producer certainly dsnt affect the music as much as other producers do. What kind of influence do you peeps think he has on the band?

The "Saturn Ascends, the one, the ten" is one of the allusions to Roman Mythology in The Grudge. It fits in with the theme because 36 years from the time that you are born, Saturn has does one rotation. This is the time where you are supposed to wipe off any grudges that you have had. "The one, the ten" is a reference to the moons of saturn. The 1st moon, Mimas, represents war, grief and despair. It represents one path that you can take, not giving up your grudges, or you can take the path of Janus, Saturns 10th moon, and also the God/dess of new beginnings. (Hence the name January for the name of the 1st month of a new year)

Dr. Jake Destructo 06-23-2005 06:03 PM

Toolnavy my friend. :p I actually formulated most of that stuff my self, but the basis for my theory was what I heard on tdn.

EDIT: I have that pic too!

Doomed To Crumble 06-23-2005 06:04 PM

yes ive also discused storys on tdn concerning the grudge, it had something to do with the god saturn eating his children(zeus, posiden, haydez) then puking them up or something like that. lol

Dr. Jake Destructo 06-23-2005 06:07 PM

How does that tie in with The Grudge though?

Doomed To Crumble 06-23-2005 06:09 PM

its was i long story and i heard it a while ago, i wish i could explain it but it was to complex for my memory to hold on to. If you were to read it you would understand it much more.

An amazon.com reviewer had something interesting to say about The Grudge's meaning, elaborating on the Saturn thing.
There's not much time or space for me to delve into every single detail, but, hopefully, this will help. Now, I'll discuss the significance of the song "The Grudge" and it's connection with the mythological figure, Saturn. There are references to the number "1" scattered throughout the song. Depending on where you look, number "1" can be a reference to the Sun (the god of life, power and vitality), or to Saturn. But on here, it's obvious that the reference is for Saturn. 1 and 10 represent the same figure: 1, 10, 19, 28 all equal "1" ("10": 1+0=1. "19": 1+9=10=1. "28": 2+8=10=1). In this case, I'm referring to the lyrical references of the song, "The Grudge." Singer Maynard James Keenan says lines like "Saturn ascends/choose 1 or 10"/Saturn ascends/comes around again." In the latter line, Maynard may be referring to an astrological term called "Saturn Return." This is where the planet Saturn takes approximately 29 years to plow through the 12 astrological signs of the zodiacal belt (Note: the planets and astrological signs are supposed to have, more or less, considerable influence on human beings and events on planet earth.) When this happens, everyone supposedly will go through a difficult time in their lives (particularly every 29 years.) And when this happens, we are supposed to learn and grow from this - as Saturn's influence indicates.
Dr. Jake Destructo 06-23-2005 06:41 PM

That's sort of an elaborated version of what I said about Saturn. :p nice work on finding that. :thumb: I don't get the numbers though.

Huber 06-23-2005 07:00 PM

That's cool, the Saturn thing has been bugging me for ages. I like that concept. That whole song is amazing.

Doomed To Crumble 06-23-2005 08:07 PM

ya i like your description better then mine, i no that the one i got was an opinion on tdn but after hearing yours it makes alot more sense.

Dr. Jake Destructo 06-23-2005 08:10 PM

If I'm remembering my Roman Mythology correctly, Saturn wasn't the father of Juptiter. I think it was a dude by the name of Cronos. I'ts been a while since I've had my mythology course, so I'm gonna double check here.

I come to you bearing great news!

I spoke the The JoZ, and I basically confronted him with an ultimatum. Either he got some tracks up, or we find someone else. He said that he could have Stinkfist and Lateralus up tomorrow night. I will YSI the conversation if you guys want, but nothing spectacular happens. :p

Thai Noodles2 06-23-2005 08:29 PM

Anyone else seen the manyard fights fan video on the internet, I cant tell if it's fake or what.

Is it possible to remove and instrument completly out of a song so that you can record to it, like the drums?

I just added you :thumb:

Dr. Jake Destructo 06-23-2005 08:43 PM

There is a very mediocre effect that you can use with Goldwave. It will never completely remove an insturment, but it can work pretty good if you want to remove vox and drums.

http://www.goldwave.com

it's a 5 mb download, so it shouldn't take you too long, even if you're on dialup like myself.

Huber 06-23-2005 08:51 PM

I used to use Goldwave, never noticed this "effect". What was it called?
