no I really don't like JP that much

I just really can't stand Vai

I was talking about musical enjoyment.
Inkstar 08-15-2006 12:58 AM

Yo ladies make another thread if you're gunna talk about non-DT stuff.
You are in the Dream Theater Thread.

Uhh...what?
sorry I wasn't aware that everyone else in DT quit the band and petrucci was releasing solo albums under the name my bad

Kreator2112 08-15-2006 01:00 AM

Well usually fans of the band are fans of the members in the bands. Usually that's how it works :thumb:

Otherside 08-15-2006 01:02 AM

Well I like Rudess and Myung alot but petrucci isn't really my favorite when it comes to guitars

Kreator2112 08-15-2006 01:02 AM

Who is? Vai?

playguitar 08-15-2006 01:03 AM
Well usually fans of the band are fans of the members in the bands. Usually that's how it works :thumb:
Got me.

Otherside 08-15-2006 01:05 AM

huh? I just said I couldn't stand Vai

Mikael Akerfeldt and Johnny Greenword are pretty high up there if I were to rank

Kreator2112 08-15-2006 01:05 AM

Yeah, I was kidding about Vai.

Akerfeldt kicks arse.

Otherside 08-15-2006 01:07 AM

no doubt

it's refreshing for someone in his genre to not be all about technicality and more about blending with the song and playing with emotion.

Kreator2112 08-15-2006 01:09 AM

He doesn't abuse the guitar too much.

He makes sweet love to it.

Inkstar 08-15-2006 02:24 AM

Sure is. Well, most gigs there are under 18. Got awesome?

eug008 08-15-2006 02:42 AM

You gonna come down to Brissie for this gig Inkstar? I'm gonna have to get a heap of money in a short amount of time (G2 and G3)

Inkstar 08-15-2006 03:33 AM

Yeah definitely man. We'll have to meet up. Doubt G2 will be under 18 though. :(

inassociationwithdeanlearner 08-15-2006 03:36 AM

Speaking of skolnick, does anyone have Transformation? and if so...can i have it?

But yeah to be honest i think JP sounds better inside dream theater than he does on his solo product...the reason i think this is because JP's stuff is a little to reminiscent of satch and by this i mean like constant soloing over a riff or two. The reason i like the majority of vai's stuff better is because it seems like the rest of the instruments are actually there to contribute to the song rather than just provide backing for someone to solo over, if you catch my drift.

I also feel that vai is just more inventive and his works with vocals are great as opposed to petrucci and satch who (as far as i know) havn't used vocals.

Inkstar 08-15-2006 03:43 AM

Yeah JP does sound better in DT than solo, but that's because there's 3 (sometimes 4) other people bouncing ideas off each other. So they might write a riff, then Portnoy might say "oh what if you did it this way..." or whatever. On his solo project JP didn't have that much 'freedom'.

Thats true, although i think the problem may of been that on his solo project he had too much freedom, seen as it was HIS project people probably didn't criticise him that much which then leads to a lack of developement of ideas.

But when you put so many great musicians together eg dream theater...the ideas are bound to progress and become better like what you said.

Lord Abortion 08-15-2006 04:51 AM

I need to get James' solo album:(

eug008 08-15-2006 05:09 AM

I can hook you up with it if you give me your email?

I don't blame you.

mike-o 08-15-2006 11:24 AM

No matter how hard I try, I can't get into this band. It's great to passively listen to, but when I pay attention to the music I get bored
