Lol @ FMyLife.com
Today, due to the cold, windy weather, I decided to wear my brand-new cute (and expensive) jacket that has a faux-fur hood. As I walked down the street, numerous PETA members attacked me with red liquid. I'm a Vegan and an animal-rights activist. FML

Today, I was at my senior dance dancing with this guy I really like. He was telling me how he likes a strong woman who's not afraid to make the first move. Empowered by what he said, I asked him out. He said no because he thinks girls shouldn't ask guys out. FML

Today, I was taking a shower after a run. We were under a tornado watch, and I halfway through the lights dimmed and I heard the tell-tale "train" sound. Panicked, I bolted wet and naked for the basement, crashing into my mom as I flew out the door. The sound was just her new vacuuming. FML

Today, I finally exchanged pictures with the woman I've been seeing online for some time now. She replied, saying "Thats not funny. Some people actually look like that." I sent my real picture, and thought I actually looked pretty good in it. FML

Today, I texted the hottest girl in the school saying, "I really like you, we should date". She responded with a text saying, "Sorry, I'm not into you." I then got a text saying, "Sorry, my brother stole my phone, and answered, but still it's no". I got rejected twice. Once by a man. FML

Today, I went on somewhat of a blind date. The date was ok until he tried to spoon feed me. This didn't go over so well. Later, I noticed a strange looking brief case he was carrying. I asked him what it was and he proceeded to whip out 5 yoyos and do a yoyo show in the middle of the restaurant. FML

Today, I got a email from my boss. He said he was going to have to let me go for missing so much work over the last week. I was laid off two months ago. I don't know what is more depressing, getting fired from a job twice or the fact it took two months for them to notice I wasn't there anymore. FML
Sablate McNuff 04-22-2009 08:14 AM

It probably makes me a horrible person, but I don't feel so bad about my life. Lol.
Today, I went to my new job at a pre-school. I was really excited because everything was going so well, and a little boy even said he was drawing a picture of me. He even gave it to me when he was finished. Well it was me, but I was also on fire and being stabbed and shot multiple times. FML

Today, I was going 73 in a 55 on a country road when an oncoming cop passed me. He pulled a U turn. I turned off the main road and proceeded to take random turns. I got lost, was 30 Min Late to work, oh and the cop still found me and gave me two tickets. I had to ask him for directions. FML

Today, I was working at a local restaurant when another server's table called me over to ask if I've "ever killed anybody". They informed me I looked like a serial killer. I informed them, of course, that I have never killed anybody. Another customer claimed I scared her child. I was fired. FML

Today, I was waitressing when a man sat at my table with soda from somewhere else. Drinks are half the profit for restaurants. There is a strict policy that you have to charge for carry-in drinks. I told him this, he yelled at me so I told him I was doing my job. I got fired, for doing my job. FML

Today, I brought my dog to the vet for a routine surgery. The vets assured me that no dog had ever died during this procedure. Apparently my dog was the first. FML

Today, my mother called me downstairs to give me what I assumed was going to be "The Talk" (About four years too late). So she sits me down, holds my hands, and with the gentlest, most motherly expression on her face tells me, "Honey, if you ever come home pregnant, I'll kill you and the baby." FML

Today, I came home to find my mum on the phone to the doctor. When she hung up I asked what had happened. She said they found a sexually transmitted disease in my bloodtest, and then she began to call me a slut. I'm 14, and am still a virgin. After 5 mins of crying, she tells me she was joking. FML
So, what would this chord be called?

G|-6
D|-6
A|-7
E|-7

Just wondering. I don't really know any chord names.

B7

or something like that

edit: I wanna revise that guess to C#m7

Spaceman Spiff 04-22-2009 03:33 PM

I dunno about that.. it's really not a minor chord.

I was thinking some sort of B/Emaj of sorts. But, as I said, I don't really know anything about chord names.

Well, see, if you took out that low B (the one on the E string) then what you have left is a C#minor triad. B is the minor 7th of C

Hence C#m7

edit: but I'm also using a different root note than you are, so idk

Spaceman Spiff 04-22-2009 03:45 PM

By removing that B, though, what's left is an E with a major third and sixth.

The voicing or whatever is not one that sounds like a C#m.

FunkMetalBass 04-22-2009 03:47 PM

The problem is that you have to take into consideration the tonality and how it sounds comparatively to other chords before and after it.

EDIT: Spiff, your notes (ascending) are B, E, G#, C#. E + G# + C# = C#m triad (inversion).

Best suggestion I can make is to play the chord and listen for the root of the chord as it's likely going to be one of those 4 notes, and then make a judgement from there.

Moon Flavor 04-22-2009 03:48 PM

oh.

yeah idk why i didn't notice that

So we've learned that I don't know about chords either

e: I still like C#m7 better

FunkMetalBass 04-22-2009 03:51 PM

My vote is a E6/B chord.

Spaceman Spiff 04-22-2009 03:51 PM

It's the last chord of the progression, the key is F#m. The chord before is an A with a maj6.

FunkMetalBass 04-22-2009 03:56 PM

Also, as a tip of what I've noticed....

Almost any time you see this pattern:

|-|o|-|-|
|-|-|o|-|
|-|-|o|-|

you can usually assume that's going to be the basic major triad (with the root note in red). The same thing goes for minor triads and this pattern:

|-|o|-|-|
|-|-|-|o|
|-|-|-|o|

:thumb:

Yeah, if you're playing in the key of A and have that A6 before it, it's definitely the E6/B chord.

Spaceman Spiff 04-22-2009 03:58 PM

Now... what exactly is meant by "triad"?

Is a triad a root-3-5 chord?

FunkMetalBass 04-22-2009 04:33 PM

Yay I'm helpful.

A triad is 3 notes that make up a chord, the 1-3-5 in this case.

So, any 3 note chord is called a triad?

FunkMetalBass 04-22-2009 04:46 PM

I do believe so, but I'll check on that for you as I wasn't 100% sure either.

EDIT: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triad_(music)

Okay, apparently it is only a chord consisting of the 1-3-5, 1-3b-5, 1-3b-5b, or 1-3-5#. It's a chord that can be stacked in thirds, which I did not even think about.

Let's look at the intervals between triad notes, it's simply a combination of major/minor 3rd intervals (denoted in parentheses):

Major triad: 1 (major third) 3 (minor third) 5
Minor triad: 1 (minor third) 3b (major third) 5
Diminished: 1 (minor third) 3b (minor third) 5b
Augmented: 1 (major third) 3 (major third) 5#

...the more you know...

EADGCF 04-22-2009 06:47 PM

C#min7/B or E6/B.

In the case of an ambiguous chord I like to play it and sing what I think the root should be. First impression, I heard E6. Having the 7th of C#m7 so low in the chord sounds pretty odd.
So, any 3 note chord is called a triad?
If it's tonal. Exceptions for tone-clusters, and atonal what-have-you.

I said you were right depending on the chord's context within a piece.

EADGCF 04-23-2009 12:06 AM

It doesn't really make a lot of sense to voice a 7th chord with the root on top and the 7th on the bottom, let's be honest here.

I tried having a beard, but I haven't shaved for 2 months and it just looks like I have pubes on my face. I'll be shaving tonight.

FunkMetalBass 04-23-2009 11:36 AM

I think I'm going to sell my uncle's '96 MIM Jazz. I'm looking to buy a Stingray for $500 (black body, black pickguard, maple fretboard), and I think it'll finally be time to get rid of the jazz that sees no play time.

I wrote my first-ever tap piece on it, I recorded numerous times with it, I won a bass competition at SamAsh with it, ripped some funk songs and solos in jazz band with it, and still have a picture of my late uncle holding it (he was the reason I got into music), so I think it's time to let it go and let someone else create new memories with it.

FunkMetalBass 04-23-2009 11:40 AM

By the way, it's a lefty bass. Do you think that re-stringing it for a right hander such as myself would pose a problem? I'm worried the electronics will get in the way.

fatbandit 04-23-2009 11:42 AM

The J or the Ray?

Look for photos of the bass player in Doves.

Sorry, J is righty. Ray is lefty.

lemoley 04-23-2009 11:46 AM

you do know that the bass player out of Doves plays a right handed bass but does not have it strung lefty?

FunkMetalBass 04-23-2009 11:55 AM
you do know that the bass player out of Doves plays a right handed bass but does not have it strung lefty?
No matter, do you think the knob placement will get in the way? It's got the 3-band EQ in it.

fatbandit 04-23-2009 12:13 PM

Yeah, the string placement doesn't matter Mike. The important fact is he has the bass upside down. He seems to manage alright.

I reckon if you took the knobs off so it was just grub screws it would work better too. It just might feel a bit strange in the balance department, and the way it sits on your body. Personally, I'd just get a righty Ray.

Moon Flavor 04-23-2009 12:17 PM

Wait why would you buy a lefty ray if you're right-handed...
