Hey Prince, I'll try to help you out. I'll edit it into this post, we need to do an analysis by that song anyway, and it's one of my favorite songs ever.

Rounder 02-24-2006 09:08 PM
hey thanks, that was good. But I really actually need Welcome to The Machine...oh well.
I always thought that song and even that album was one of the most easy to understand/interpret of all the floyd albums. what is it you need to analyze? the machine is pretty self-explanatory isn't it? the versus are as well. Maybe Im missing something.

MidnightRider 02-25-2006 02:24 PM
I want to meet Nick Mason more than any of them. I have a feeling he'd be much nicer to his fans, all things considered, he'd probably be cooler about giving autographs and taking pictures and stuff.
If I could meet one of them, it would be Dave. I would kill to have like an hour long jam session with him. Roger would be cool to meet too, but from all the interviews I've seen with him, he's sort of an arrogant prick.

Noyana 02-25-2006 05:31 PM

I'd take Gilmour over Waters any day of the week

Both were vital to floyd, but as brilliant as waters was, i simply don't have the respect for him the way i do for gilmour

Led-ZeppelinIV 02-25-2006 05:49 PM

Barrett :)

Atomic Rain 02-25-2006 06:30 PM
Why would Rick Wright, someone who wasn't even an official bandmember in the Wall tour because Waters kicked him out, tour with Waters again but not Gilmour?
Because Waters was justified in kicking him out.

waters was working 12h a day in the studio in order to get an album finished in order to get a bonus form the label and get some much needed money, but Rick had a holiday booked. Both were fairly relieved to part ways, i think.

Led-ZeppelinIV 02-25-2006 07:18 PM

I'm listening to Animals for the first time now. I'm on Dogs.

Yea I think Waters made the right decision

Haha, sort of...

Yeah, he is. I read an article in Rolling Stone I believe, inteviewing him. He's an artsy, snobby prick almost on the level of post-Beatles Lennon. He used to be so cool, that's the weird thing. He really was just one of the band on Live At Pompeii, but I really think during and after DSotM he got progressively worse. He just has a big inferiority complex I think, and Gilmour's immense talent and amiable personality making him so likeable by fans, it really got to Waters. And I think that Wright shouldn't have gone on vacation during a "crunch" recording session, but that doesn't excuse Water's general asinine behavior. A lot of people on the inside say that Nick was next in line to be cut because Waters would rather pay a session musician some small royalties than let his long-time friend and fellow band member get a cut of his album. Of course, Nick doesn't hold a grudge. He's too cool for that :) But yeah, Gilmour is second in my "want-to-meet" list. Then Wright. Then Waters. If only to spit in his face.

Rounder 02-25-2006 09:28 PM
Barrett :)
It would last less than a minute. . I would much rather talk to someone I could communicate wuth. Gilmour, Wright or Mason.

He's not like totally crazy anymore. He's just reclusive. It would awesome to be able to have a conversation with him, especially since nobody else outside of his family really knows what he thinks/what he's like.

Apparently he hasn't listened to any music but light jazz for 30 years, and he never leaves his house if he can avoid it, which he does, as his sister takes care of him. The epitome of a fallen star. I would love to meet him as well, just to have a conversation of any type.

Careful, if you do that you'll have to make a big album about your spiralling path into madness.

I'm glad someone got it :) Thank you Riva, for making me have faith in the human race again.

LF96 02-26-2006 02:32 PM

Darn it, Waters doesn't come near me either, the closest he plays is Berlin and if I want to go to that concert I'll have to take a drive of at least 5 hours or something (rough draft). It would be cool to go though, he plays there on my birthday.

I think everyone got it. It wasn't a very hard-to-comprehend reference.

MidnightRider 02-26-2006 08:12 PM

Yeah, it was sort of obvious.

Random story: I was at a party Friday and a bunch of people were sitting around when my friend's little brother brought his acoustic guitar in. We were all taking turns playing songs, and when it got to me, I played WYWH. I was amazed, almost everyone there knew the words.

You'd be surprised how many people don't know the story behind The Wall.

I love the Wot's Uh The Deal riff... god I love it. I was in GuitarCenter for 5 hours yesterday and couldn't stop playing it.

Store Attendant: Sir, you've been here playing the same riff for nearly 5 hours. I'm not sure if... hey, is that Pink Floyd?

Led-ZeppelinIV 02-26-2006 10:43 PM
Have you seen the movie?
No. All I know is that every song is a different element adding to the main character's madness.

Riva 02-26-2006 10:52 PM

Well, sort of.

Basically, the main character Pink is an almagamation of maybe 10% Syd Barrett, and 90% Roger Waters. His father is killed in WWII when he is just a baby, and as such his mother simultaneously coddles him far too much, and ignores him emotionally.

Things don't improve much for young Pink, who is terrorised by a sadistic education system, and as such, it is a troubled young man who eventually lands a record contract, and becomes a super star. His wife, disgusted with his hot/cold attitude (he is indifferent to her at times, and then far too clingy at others), cheats on him, which effectively nails his coffin closed.

He finally has an epiphany and gives up trying to protect his sanity from those who control him. As such, his mind turns him into a cruel dictator, a facist who lacks empathy for his fellow man. It is the only thing that can preserve him in this harsh world he has been thrust into.

As a side note, it is ironic that Roger felt like a facist, when he spent so long hating them for killing his father.

Anyways, Pink, disgusted by himself finally, puts himself on trial, and inflicts a punishment on himself... tearing down the wall that he erected between the outside world and himself.

Ironically, the one thing that can save him is what he views as a punishment.

So, the Wall is brought down, and we feel relief for Pink, a relief that is overshadowed by the ominous feeling that all this is just a cycle which will recur again.

Britton 02-26-2006 10:52 PM

If I got to meet one of the floyd members it would be Gilmour.

I would ask him for a guitar lesson on soloing

Glitterati 02-26-2006 11:03 PM

There's a lot of obvious Nazi imagery in the film.

Another thing Tommy and The Wall have in common is they both start out with a character losing a father in WWII.

I always liked that part in the movie right after One Of My Turns, after he destroys the apartment. It's when he's lying in the pool, and the blood is slowly dripping through the pool. He's just floating there pondering life.

And if I could choose, I'd meet Dave. Seems like a cool guy.

123. He seems like a guy I would like to visit, you know one of those cool neighboors you go over to just chill with. :chug:

magicbus 02-27-2006 09:53 AM

If I were to hang out with Gilmour, I'd talk about his career and jam with him. I wouldn't really ask for a lesson, cause I basically have his playing style down, but it'd still be fun to jam.

Doctor Night 02-27-2006 01:00 PM

He's Playing a show in Manchester on March 24th, I wanna go so bad. But the Thing is, Clapton is playing Manchester too on the same night.

Captain Walker would've been killed closer to WWI if he was in a war at all. Hence the song 1921.

Prince of Darkness 02-27-2006 01:27 PM

I would like to meet Rick Wright. I mean, he's a genius behind that keyboard.

But if he's too busy...Gilmour.

I would like to meet Waters, but he's a bit too pricky for my taste. He's a genius songwriter, but a prick

GuitarCenter is so gifuckenormous they wouldn't even have noticed. I actually spent a lot of time playing teh drumses. I thought I did pretty good considering I'd never played before. I think I'm gonna get a set for my birthday (April 15th)

God, I'm still so freaking addicted to new Floyd stuff now (Obscured By Clouds, Atom Heart Mother) It feels like back when I was a music n00by and first got into Floyd. But that's a story no one wants to hear again :p
