I think I'm going to get to go to Panic on December 31. :thumb:

On a different note: Little Feat rocks so much and doesn't get as much recognition as other 70s bands.

jpj 11-27-2005 07:45 PM

Phil Lesh on Tuesday :D

And yes, Little Feat is awesome.

Kaleidoscope Eyes 12-02-2005 08:24 AM

I freaked out a little when I saw post #1291

I saw someone from Little Feat a few years ago, in someones living room. I forget who, and I was really bored, but maybe somone remembers

Broken Arrow 12-02-2005 08:47 PM

Haha did you think some hacking was going down?

Xen 12-03-2005 02:09 AM

No mention of King Crimson is this thread? They're a great jam band when they play live. They'll improvise in the short breaks between parts like in 21st Century Schitzoid man and they'll play riffs in different and weird time signatures. Awesome live band.

Badmoon 12-03-2005 01:39 PM

King Crimson is not actually a "Jam Band".

Phil Lesh this Tuesday or was that an old post?

I'm seeing Phil Lesh this Tuesday though..pretty pumped.

New Year's

Greyspoke Variety is opening for Dark Star Orchestra at Higher Ground at New Year's.

Should be a sick show

wanton 12-28-2005 02:37 PM

Has anyone listened to My Morning Jacket's album Z?

It's Jambase's top album of 2005 and the reviews make it sound good. I don't even know what type of music MMJ plays.

Broken Arrow 12-28-2005 08:28 PM

I've heard of the band but I haven't heard anything by them.

Why don't you visit CR anymore Wanton?

wanton 12-29-2005 01:38 PM
I've heard of the band but I haven't heard anything by them.

I try to keep up but it moves too fast and I get busy.

I read the last few pages when I get the chance.

KMidura 01-01-2006 02:20 PM

DSO put on another epic New Year's show. With many an epic song. Best performance of shakedown street that I've ever seen.
...and with Greyspoke playing in between sets, we were treated to 6 1/2 hours of music of glorious and mind-bending music.

Pirate Satellite 01-04-2006 05:35 PM

My Morning Jacket is really, really, great. One of the best live bands I've ever seen and incredible studio albums, too.

If anyone wants some of their stuff, IM me at Piratesatellite. If anyone has anything to trade, (especially the new Phish show,) that would be even better, because I'm running low on jam band music. I have four MMJ albums and a live show.

Jam2Me 01-08-2006 08:47 PM

Whot he hell is My Morning Jacket, on jambase they got voted best album of the year by like everyone and they came to a venue near me I had no clue who they were (prior to all the voting etc.)...I didn't think they wear a jam band, the few tracks I downloaded made me think they were like Death Cab For Cutie or something.

jpj 01-09-2006 02:17 PM

I saw one of their videos on digital cable and from what I remember it had like a reggae-ish feel to it.

wanton 01-09-2006 04:39 PM

Trey's Shine didn't even make JamBase's top ten and I know it was better than The White Stripes.

Lately Jambase has been using the term jamband too loosely. I know it's definition is broad, but there are limits.

edit: I can send anyone My Morning Jacket - Z if they want to hear it. Pretty overrated IMO

Jam2Me 01-09-2006 04:52 PM

If you could e-mail it to tmctague@gmail.com I'd greatly appreciate it. :D

jpj 01-09-2006 07:19 PM

I'd like to hear it as well.

wartsandall AT gmail.com

Pirate Satellite 01-10-2006 03:31 PM

Yeah, Z might be a little overrated, but I think At Dawn, The Tennessee Fire and especially It Still Moves are genius albums. It Still Moves is the jammiest they've ever been, and I'd argue it's the best.

KMidura 01-12-2006 07:19 PM

Greyspoke Variety will be playing at Nectar's Friday the 13th, I suggest that anyone who is in the area go and prepare to have their face melted.

cosmic mule 01-16-2006 09:30 PM

I love the spirit of these type of bands, although I think the main factor would be the improvisation among the different musicians of the band. I mean, be bop wouldn't be "jam band" stuff, but "A love supreme" and many jazz aproaches definitely would. I love that spirit in music. We could even say that the so called "world music" (is there any "non world" music?) has the same spirit most of the times.

So, along with Pharoah Sanders, Jimmy Smith, Kroke, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and many others, I would choose these bands as my favs:

Grateful Dead
The Other Ones
Allman Brothers Band
Little Feat
Frogwings
Derek Trucks Band
Zappa
Dirty Dozen Brass Band
Medeski, Martin & Wood
Gov't Mule
Phish

I'm Spanish, so I've hardly had the opportunity of seeing them live, except for Phish and Gov't Mule.

I remember Phish's visit to Barcelona as one of the best experiences I've had.

KMidura 01-19-2006 07:21 PM

The first set to Greyspoke Variety's Live at the Pinnacle is now up on Archive.org. I recognize that I am biased, but I highly recommend giving it a listen, it will take you to a better place.

http://www.archive.org/audio/etree-details-db.php?id=32894

cosmic mule 01-19-2006 07:52 PM

I've just downloaded the first song and while I was listening to the intro I was thinking "mmm... it sounds a lot like Grateful Dead". Then it became pretty obvious since it's a cover. I like the way they sound. Thanks, I'll check them out. At the beginning it also reminded me of Dickie Betts' playing.

Talking about this kind of guitar players, I forgot to name one my favourite artists among the jam band scene: Steve Kimock. Do you know his music, Kmidura?

KMidura 01-20-2006 11:16 AM

Heard a lot about Kimock, heard his music once or twice, but nothing significant, if you could recommend a show that's on the archive that would be excellent.

As far as Greyspoke Variety goes, they play about 75% originals, and their covers range from the music of typical Jambands - Grateful Dead (Eyes of the World, Feel Like a Stranger), Phish (Mike's Song), Allman Brothers (Whipping Post, Elizabeth Reed)- to random **** -Chariots of Fire, Oh Canada (Canadian National Anthem).

The set that you've heard part of, and the second set (listed on the archive as 2005-08-20) is prime Greyspoke, if you want a quick sampler of some of their originals, I'd say listen to Pale (2005-08-20), Eight (2005-08-18), Babushka's Demise (2005-08-18), and March of the Pandas - 20 minute + instrumental (2005-08-18). That being said though, as any good jamband does, a lot of their music feeds off context, they like to tease songs, and go into and out of songs frequently. So, if you like what you hear, do yourself a favor and download both sets, listen to them back to back, and enjoy.

[edit: grammar and spelling]

BludgeonySteve 01-23-2006 06:48 PM

I just got Billy Breathes by Phish. Man i'm glad Badmoon got me into them.

Jam2Me 01-23-2006 07:30 PM

Jazz Is Dead is on tour, coming to Toad's Place...see you there if you're going.

KMidura 01-23-2006 09:33 PM

my bad, I'm retarded... combined Derek Trucks and Jimmy Herring into one person, searched to see if the Allman Brothers were playing that night rather than searching to see if The Dead were playing

KMidura 01-27-2006 11:39 AM

Greyspoke Variety will be playing tonight in Burlington, if you're in the area I highly suggest checking them out. I believe they're in Cook, free community event or some such thing.

6Stringer 01-28-2006 09:27 PM

Go to http://www.nugs.net. The 6 hour Grateful Dead music marathon is on... well, it's been on, I meant to post this earlier, but I haven't been home. Enjoy all my fellow deadheads.

robo2448 01-31-2006 08:43 PM

I'm seeing Medeski, Martin, and Wood in Danbury, CT on February 22nd. Should be an awesome show. I've only heard like 5 songs by them and don't own anything by them, but my friend is a fan and he's buying tickets right now. From what I've heard though, I really like their unique jazz sound. Any other fans?

A couple friends of mine are going to that but I don't think I will.

I've only got a couple of studio albums, "End of the World Party" is a pretty good album in my opinion, I think they're on the archive, you could probably check out some of their live stuff there.

Say hello to your confirmed Bonaroo artists. Really surpised to see Radiohead there.

Broken Arrow 02-01-2006 03:34 PM

I wish I could go. :(

Maybe when I get my lisence.

Jam2Me 02-01-2006 03:53 PM

EDIT: Nevermind it's pretty good, but I don't think I'd have enough interest to go. I've most of the artists I want to see on that list, the others would be filler. I don't recall so much filler in past years.

jpj 02-01-2006 06:30 PM

Well, that's not all of the bands that are going to be there, just the ones that are confirmed thus far.

KMidura 02-01-2006 07:23 PM

The filler band's are all very good, but I agree with Jam2Me in that despite their abilities, their styles and music doesn't necessarily appeal to me. To me, Bonaroo is getting more and more commercial, and the music is becoming more and more mainstream. I mean... Bonnie Rait? She's a great artist, but does she belong at Bonaroo?

anyway, just my opinion.

KMidura 02-03-2006 01:49 PM

New Greyspoke Variety:
Not a great recording, but sick musically
Chariots of Fire -> Duncan's House is a great track

http://www.archive.org/audio/etree-details-db.php?id=33420

also, there should be an insane show up within a week or so
