Recommendations thread. :thumb: However, many power metal bands don't have ultra-downtuned riffs and screaming vocals... If you want, try Nile, Six Feet Under or Cryptopsy. All death metal bands...those should fit the bill for what you are looking for. EDIT: Got an interesting question I'm pondering...are power metal bands better with or without keyboardists? |

EDIT: Got an interesting question I'm pondering...are power metal bands better with or without keyboardists?
I don't mind keyboards, but I only like them when they are subtle, I don't usually like too many keyboards in a song and I rather there be more guitar riffs but if they are used less often then that's alright. |
I used to have problem with keyboards too but I soon got over it. Still I much prefer the guitar parts.
|
I used to have a huge problem with the standard double-pedal beats in many Power Metal bands, as well as the vocals. I've gotten over both now, though some vocals and drumming still p*sses me off. Sonata Arctica being one of the vocals I still can't stand
|
Sonata are great, Reckoning night is my favourite out of the two I have heard though(winterheart's guild is the other)
|
I'm pretty new to power metal: can anyone upload a couple of good power-metal songs for me to sample?
|
I'm pretty new to power metal: can anyone upload a couple of good power-metal songs for me to sample?
I'll upload some songs when I get back from work tonight, though a few bands you should look into in the meantime are: Nightwish Blind Guardian Lost Horizon Wuthering Heights Manowar Rhapsody Gamma Ray Running Wild Helloween Savatage Angra Kamelot Iced Earth Dragonforce Firewind Children of Bodom Kalmah Norther Skyfire That should be enough to go on for now. |
Good list there Steer
I'm copying down a few of those I'm not too familiar with either |

Keyboards in almost all cases. They add atmosphere, and are often what gives power metal the sound I love. Especially in the case of Rhapsody. As far as I'm concerned, Rhapsody may not be wortn listening to if they didn't have Alex Staropoli doing his amazing keyboard work. |
Personally, I LOVE keyboards in metal. Especially with the deep "pad" synth sounds, you can add so much color and darkness to a song's chord progression and music.
|
I got Demons and Wizards : Touched By The Crimson king, and it rocks hard. The Immigrant Song cover is awesome.
And Cain : I love keys, especially in bands like Vintersorg and Borknagar, where the keys are just simple root chords, they add so much atmosphere. |
They really do. It works both ways, too: the guitars are playing some badass riff, or are chugging on the low strings, and the keyboards move through the chord progressions with fancy extended shapes. Very emotional and atmospheric. I use synths as much as I can in my heavy songs without getting overbearing.

I'm really looking to get both Demons and Wizards CD's, whether I trade for them or buy them I don't care. I need them either way |

are you a trader, do you trade CDs in forums? |
I can't believe no one has mentioned Queensryche, they're simply amazing. Favourite song has to be "Anybody Listening", I also have Ecliptica from Sonata Arctica that album boots arse :)
|
Queensryche aren't power metal, they're progressive.
|
Steerpike-Thanks for the list. I like Nightwish and am enjoying Dragonforce so cheers for those.
|
I got Rhapsody's Power of the Dragonflame today. \m/
Also, I saw Luca Turilli's King of the Twilight album there, and was considering buying it, but decided to wait. Would you guys say it's worth buying? I love Rhapsody, so I'm thinking I'll enjoy it. |

They're good at what they do. This album in particular is awesome but there's something REALLY irritating: the spoken parts in the songs :( |

Nothing against people with lisps, but that guy annoyed the crap out of me. |

Yeh I trade. Not often, but I'm avialable for trading now |

Cool, I mostly trade on metal-rules. If you have a tradelist at the moment just send me an e-mail :) |

I'll just post it: List: http://www.recordnerd.com/lists/FatDeposit AIM: veedbok |
I dont use AIM :(
if fact I tried to get an account today and download the messenger but my computer hates me and the link wont work  EDIT /sees some pretty valuable stuff in there you dont mean AIM trade, right? EDIT2 Judging from you tradelist I suppose you mean AIM trade while I mean actual CD trading via earth mail, post office included. My fault, I should have been more specific. Pretty good collection though :( |
I think the best power metal band is Avenged Sevenfold, and they are power metal/power rock whatever, not metal core.
|
Hammerfall, Sonata Arctica and Nightwish are my three favs. Dragonforce is pretty good too.
I strongly dislike a7x though. |
I think the best power metal band is Avenged Sevenfold, and they are power metal/power rock whatever, not metal core.
Well, they are now apparently. But you sound like a complete fanboy. How many power metal bands can you name off the top of your head? And how many of those have you actually listened to? |
Is it just me or is there this big wave of n00bs with this guy at the head
|
I think it's just the second wave of summer newbs.
|
No i'm not going to reply cause it'll cause flaming and I don't want problems. Just cause I think a7x is a good band shouldn't be a problem, that's my opinion and i'll stick to it. Who's your favorite power metal band?
|

(slaps forehead) How could it cause flaming to just tell me how much power metal you've actually heard? And to answer your question, my top 5 power metal bands are: 1. Blind Guardian 2. Edguy 3. Nightwish 4. Wuthering Heights 5. Savatage |
how do you pronounce edguy? it just looks like ed-guy to me and that sounds weird
|
how do you pronounce edguy? it just looks like ed-guy to me and that sounds weird
Far as I know, that's how you say it. It's supposed to be some kind of inside joke. |
Well i'm happy for you that you like those bands, and because just about everything you say if it has your opinion in it there's a problem. I could say Metalica, not sure if there's one or two Ls, is power metal and someone would come back with a negative response so i'm just not going to.
|
Hmm after looking at the archive for wuthering heights they look quite appealing, any songs i should check out?
