It's interesting to hear Won't Get Fooled Again this early on. They hadn't worked it out yet. Sound very tentative playing with the backing track. And the second bridge is interesting, as well. Glad they worked it out. Bargain still being worked out as well, from the sound of it. Great stuff!

Good point, its The Who! Put the smile on an Emotional fan's face, and convert any hardcore metal guy.. YOURS TODAY! And its free! :p

Plus! come on.. what yodeller could possibly live up to Daltrey's voice?? His work on My Generation for Who's Next is inspiring.

Ok, my street hawker impression is done.. The Who are more one of those revolutionary bands that cross and thus nullify boundries of genre.. like The Beatles. Anyone who calls the Beatles pop rock needs to be popped with a rock themselves (ok.. corny), not many bands can change a generation of teenagers with a single line of lyric (thread title).

Ill always be a Zeppelin fan at heart, and I believe they fit into that category as well.. but ANYone can agree that the Who filled gaps that musicians and fans never realized existed until they were paved over by insane live acts, the concept of a 'rock drummer,' and an over the top frontman.

EDIT: Yea.. so basically, I agree.. im gonna learn to cut down on bombastic behavior one of these days, heh.

I can try sending it to you Pink Freud. I received your blues mailing list thing, so we will see what happens with this.

Hopefully something will work for him. The one I sent to his aim address didn't cause a failed delivery in my inbox, so we'll see.

Yeah, I feel the same way. The old stuff still stands up. The Who have always been ahead of there time. I'm convinced to some ears they still are. For instance when the Who did the "Farewell" tour in '82 they brought The Clash with them. Could a band like The Stones or Zep bring a band like The Clash on tour with them at that time? No way. Wouldn't even think to. You can imagine it now, but not then. Pete said it was like passing the torch. He knew what was up. He knew The Who's time was up for the time being and he had always liked punk. He considered what the Sex Pistols were doing equal to what The Who had done at there start. Only for a new generation. And in many ways he was right.

The remarkable thing is the door swung both ways. While the punks respected no one and held disdain for most everything that came before, they didn't mind The Who. Who Are You was written after an incident where two Pistols told a drunken Pete they "loved The Who" and would be saddened if they broke up. Kurt Cobain was a Who fan, I believe. And he was disappointed when Pete bad mouthed his band about one thing or another. I think it was the instrument smashing. And a couple of other things. Nirvana is still the only other band I've seen that could pull that off, btw. Just my opinion.

But yeah, even in '2000 at The Royal Albert Hall gigs. Who showed up to jam with The Who? Classic rockers? Nope. It was Paul Weller from The Jam, Eddie Vedder from Pearl Jam, Noel Galleger from Oasis, and some dude from the Stereophonics. Galleger plays great guitar on Won't Get Fooled Again. Oh, and Bryan Adams was there. That gave me a big WTF? Unless he is popular in England, or somethin'?

But yeah, The Who stand apart somehow. Don't know what that means, but it sounds great.....

PinkFreud 04-14-2006 12:02 AM

I got the links guys. Thanks a lot!

Tusk 04-14-2006 12:12 AM

Mmmm... great point there, and I learned something. Punk bands hated the "dinosaurs of rock," but if one of the original top punk bands actually toured with The Who, then it makes everything said even more valid. That The Who truly transcended all notions of genre.. im amazed at that.. ill bet The Clash learned a few things from the live performances of The Who as well. ;) That merely translated into Who influence on the punk movement, which can be only a good thing.

The Who are one of few true legends of music.. and the most impressive thing is.. they're legends amongst musicians, who count for more than listeners, because musicians make and shape their own music based on the music of bands they admire.

JohnXDoesn't 04-14-2006 12:41 AM

^Yeah, and when I said earlier I didn't like a lot of classic rock, that is true, but it's the term I have an aversion to more then anything. I love rock n roll. Love The Stones, Beatles, Dylan. The Who, of course. Hendrix was wild. Joplin can bring tears to my eyes. Zep were good, and I give them a listen from time to time. In Though The Outdoor, mostly. I love Bruce Springsteen. Hell, I like Fleetwood Mac and The Eagles!

But to me The Who transcend that whole bunch. I think in 100 years when all is said and done and many things are forgotten, kids like I used to be (I'm 25) will still be able to put on Live At Leeds and have someone go "WTF IS THAT AWFUL NOISE!!" And when the person says "oh, that's an old band called The Who" the other will say "The what? THEY SUCK!"

And somewhere in the great beyond Pete and the boys will be laughing there arses off..... :)

The My Generation lyrics (more specifically our thread title now) do more than define a generation of teenagers - they've defined every generation of teenagers since. The song is perfect in a lot of ways, but especially in summing up everything about adolesence. The rebellious attitude, defiance, teenage angst, its all there in My Generation. Actually now that I think about it, it would be hard to find a song that embodies a concept 40 years later just as powerfully as it did when it was first released. To hear a song like that in 1965 must have just been stunning. That's one of those things that changes rock history.

And The Who always earned their respect from other musicians, somehow. Obviously no one looked up to Pete as a guitar virtuoso, but the punks had to respect the attitude of the group. Their performance is just so mind-blowing and everything they did in the mid-60's (windmill, instrument smashing, feedback, and so on) was so ahead of the time. Punk bands adopted that attitude, but to me smashing a guitar never had the same meaning when the Clash or whoever did it.

Edit: I just got the Live and the Young Vic material and just started listening. Pure and Easy was great, and this Young Man Blues is blistering. The drum sound is very clear which I like because I usually listen to Moon anyway.

This looks interesting. For those who like to read outside these little boxes. Took the guy a few years to write and apparently Pete approves, somewhat. The webmaster of Pete's website even put a news item up about it saying it is quite good. It's super cheap if you download it and read it off your computer:

http://www.lulu.com/content/177888

EDIT: Oh, and it is self published, so chances are you won't find it many other places except certain online outlets and the authors website.

So, how 'bout that Young Vic show, guys? Pretty damn awesome, amirite?

Lunch 04-16-2006 01:50 PM

Yea, like you said earlier they obviously had some work to put into those songs, but you can never deny the energy. The playing on the whole was good and the Who live is fantastic anyway.
