Still into Jimmy Herring?
Very much so, especially his stuff on Jazz is Dead. It's hard to believe how terribly underrated Jimmy and all of his bands are. Have you heard Jazz Is Dead - Great Sky River by any chance Badmoon? |
If I could go I would be the happiest person on earth. I might be able to go to a local festivel called the Sierra Music Festival thogh. Gov't Mule, Les Claypool, and Garage Mahal are playing at it to name a few. Should be pretty cool.

Yeah, it's a live album but it plays some of my favorite Grateful Dead songs like China Cat Sunflower, Saint Stephen, and Morning Dew thats probaly why I like it better than the others.

Nice, I could only find Laughing Water, which I have. I'll keep lookin' :).
alright, dont ever mention phish being like the grateful dead because that is not who they are. they are not trying to be like the grateful dead. they have been working hard since the earlier 80's to break out of being called a grateful dead cover band. they created thier own style that is fun and different. they improvised jamming to a higher degree no one had imagined.
oh yeha and what is your hole deal anyway..trying to contrdict what isay?...your saying its wrong to insult people but then you jsut go and do it to me...as trey says in bittersweet motel "kiss my *** you ****ing tool"...i'll be looking foward to your next message ...im sure it will make my day
Firstly, I didn't say they were like the Grateful Dead, I said they were in the same genre, which happens to have a very wide definition. Secondly, who the hell would call them a cover band, I personally have never heard them play a Dead song, and even if they did cover one or two they certainly don't do it enough to be considered a cover band. Thirdly, I never insulted you, you might want to go back and read what I said again. Finally, thank you for essentially admitting that they are in fact a jam band. |
what is the official meaning of being a jam band then?
|

Finally, thank you for essentially admitting that they are in fact a jam band.
are you ****ing kidding me? phish started out covering some grateful dead tunes such as scarlet begonias, eyes of the world, fire on the mountain, bertha etc.. but then they stopped playing those songs so that they wouldnt be compared to the grateful dead like your gay *** is doing. if you knew anything at all you would know that people have been caling phish a second take on the grateful dead for thier whole history jsut becasue i said phish improvised jamming doesnt mean anytihng close to them being a jam band. if a punk gothic band jammed for 15 minutes in one song would they be condsidered a jam band? why do you think phish is a jam band and if it is then why. what your characteristics of jam band? phish plays a wide variety of different music which means you can't put them into one specific genre. |
what is the official meaning of being a jam band then?
there is no offical meaning. it is just a title held by bands given to them by people like KMidura who cant appreciate the vibes given by bands...so wah tim trying to say is that being called a jam band is a loosely given word....oh by the way, KMidura is a tool |

I don't see why you associate the term "jam band" in a negative connotation. |
what is the official meaning of being a jam band then?
A Jam Band (generally) is a band that has influence from the Grateful Dead and/or the Allman Brothers Band. Even though some of their influence is loose on the occasional Jam Band there is some there, for the Grateful Dead and the A.B.B. paved the way for these Jam Bands by doing what they are now known for (Improv, bootlegging, constant tours, influence) but much earlier. For one, Jam Bands perform free form improvisation frequently. However, many bands do that, so why aren't they called Jam Bands? Well, Jam Bands are notoriously known for the amount of influence they bring in; it is usually common to hear a band use a variety of different genres. The genres are usually American Root (Country, Bluegrass, etc) genres and Jazz, however, Rock is usually the base of their music. Aswell as high influence, Jam Bands are known for their constant touring and performances at festivals. It's quite easy to catch a load of Jam Bands coming to your town during the year, because they tour constantly. You can also usually bring a tape recorded and record it. That's just a basic definition (if you ask me). Books and such have released others. |
phish plays a wide variety of different music which means you can't put them into one specific genre.
Jam bands don't have to fit into one specific type of music. Gov't Mule plays for the most part blues-rock, where SCI is more along the lines of jazz and bluegrass. They are both jam bands, are they not? |
i think phish is to magical to be considered just a jamband as so many others are called; and no, phish is not a genre of music, but can you say what genre do they fit in? yes they had a lot of jamming going on in their music and were known for their live performances, however, so many other bands that do not tend to jam out as much are also considered jambands. i see where panicphire is coming from on this one, although he is not making his point as clear, but it is hard to actually determine what makes a band a jamband.you cant describe phish in words, let alone put the guys in one category as being just a jamband when they are so much more than that...

A little harsh, but I agree. |
Jesus christ, how many Phish fanboys have we had in the past two days? And they're all dumb as rocks.
jsut becasue i said phish improvised jamming doesnt mean anytihng close to them being a jam band. if a punk gothic band jammed for 15 minutes in one song would they be condsidered a jam band? why do you think phish is a jam band and if it is then why. what your characteristics of jam band?
phish plays a wide variety of different music which means you can't put them into one specific genre.
if a punk gothic band improvised and jammed for 15 minutes in one song, were known especially for shining specifically in a live environment, and incorporated aspects of other genres and what not into said jam then yes, i would consider them a jam band. and to your second point in my quote, just because they play around with other varieties of music doesnt mean theyre not a jam band. rather, it strengthens my argument. the allman brothers and the grateful dead both incorporated other genres into their music and many people consider them the prototypical jam bands. by the way, your posts are so riddled with typos that theyve gotten hard to read. maybe try cleaning it up? p.s. im not gay and you trying to say that other people are only makes you seem insecure and immature and makes it that much harder to respect what youre trying to say. :thumb: |

Exactly. The Dead went from Psychedelia to Country-Rock like it was nothing, then later incorporated everything from reggae to hints of disco. The Allmans often used jazz improvisation along with blues-rock (Elizabeth Reed). Genre crossing, in the first jam bands. |
all im trying to say is quite dissing
No one ever said Phish was a bad band. They are magnificent band, a magnificent jam band. |

none of us are "dissing" phish. were justifying our labeling of them as a jam band. i really dont see why youre so adverse to calling them that. theres absolutely nothing wrong with it. |

Yes hints, nothing more than hints... *slowly backs away* :p |
This is my first time posting in this thread...and all I can say is I'm very ashamed of how you guys treat people with different opinions than your own.
Since everyone's arguing about what constitutes a jam band, I'd sum in up by simply saying a jam band is a band whose live performances are their strong point, instead of albums or videos. I'd consider Phish a jam band. I recently bought Enlightened Rogues by ABB on vinyl (fifty cents!). I haven't actually gotten a chance to listen to it though yet, since I bought like thirty other albums and I haven't had a whole lot of time to get through them all (yes I realize the Allman Bros should have been higher up on my list). What do you guys think of Enlightened Rogues? I notice most people mainly refer to Eat a Peach and Live at Fillmore, so I don't get a chance to hear about a lot of their other albums. |

Did I ever in my post say Phish was a bad band? No. Phish is an amazing band. I like the way you put words in people's mouth too and the way you can get by the swear filter. |
Guys lets just keep our good vibe we had going. Just ignore list em
