A lot of those prog metal bands with death vocals and acoustic breaks just remind me of bad versions of Opeth though.
123. After hearing Opeth I can't really listen to those other bands, they just sound like bad imitations. |

I try not to draw comparisons with Opeth, and it really helps. I love Agalloch, and November's Doom is a band that I've been gettingin to recently, they're good too. Without sounding too much like an Opeth clone. |
123.
Its rumoured Novembers Doom started out before Opeth so I dont think they can be a clone. :) |
Novembers Doom is great. My favorite song would have to be "Dark Feilds For Brilliance".
And yeah, check out Nevermore forsure. :D |
Novembers Doom released their first album in 92, if I'm not mistaken...
Great band. I have all of their stuff... |
Yes he did.
BlackWater Park Deliverance Damnation. All exellent albums, I prefer Wilon's styyle of production to the guy who did production on Ghost Reveries. Only after hearing that album I realized what a huge influence Wilson had on Opeth's albums
Wilson gave the band the "edge" that they didn't have on earlier albums. While this may aggrivate some older Opeth fans, I really like the direction that he took the band in. |

It's also interesting to note how Wilson's own musical direction was altered a bit after he had worked so much with opeth. If you listen to some of Porcupine Tree's newer tracks, I'd say it's quite easy to hear the influence that Opeth's style has had on them. I like it how it works both ways with Wilson afflicting and helping shape Opeth's sound and vice versa. |
Well they've both matured and become better musicians, so I can't ask for more than that.
It would be nice to hear some more songs from Opeth that would sound like Morningrise, just for old time's sake. |
The thing about Orchid and Morningrise is that, okay, we all know the guitar harmonies were really random and didnt really have structure, (Which I believe is the reason most of the songs on these albums were Opeth's longest) but I think this made the Acoustic parts better, they were long and, I don't know, had a more mystical feel to them.
And more importantly the "Riffs" and Acoustic licks did not repeat themselves excessively. The "Acoustic" parts on the later albums are good, but not in the same league as the Orchid/Morningrise era*. I mean, In the song "Blackwater Park" there is the mellow tune near the start that goes on for about 10years. I like it... but you wouldn't have had that in the first 2 albums. I think, that's something they really miss. I agree with Thor... Some old style Opeth. Not nessesarily a whole album but a mixture. Orchid/Morningrise Style + My Arms, You're Hearse/Still Life/ Blackwater Park Style on one album?? Exquisit. :) *Excluding Damnation. |
I really miss the flamenco playing that they ditched after Still Life... it was sooooo good.

I really hope they don't stick with this style unless they put 100 percent in to each album (Compare Ghost of Perdition to say... Atonement. Its 100percent effort to about 50percent). |
Well after Still Life they began using much more keyboards which is just fine with me.

That's an awesome feature they have on the new stuff, but still... the flamenco was so good! |

Ghost Reveries is good IMO. But yeah, What's the deal with Atonement? I don't dislike it at all... but it's just, if the next album was Orchid/Morningrise style, you would not have a song like that. Ghost Reveries is one of the only Opeth albums that I consider to have Filler. Okay on "My Arms, You're Hearse" there is some dare I say pointless tracks, but even then it has more song in total than GR. And I suppose the songs that I consider "pointless" in MAYH contribute in some way to the concept. Bring back long epic acoustic tracks! 777th POST OMG NOWHERE NEAR THE MOFOING BEAST !!!!!ONE!!!EXCLAMATION1111!! |
Well after Still Life they began using much more keyboards which is just fine with me.
They didn't start really using keyboards until Damnation and Gr. Before that there was just the occasional piano part which has been around since Orchid, plus the mellotron on MAYH. |
I think they should ditch the keyboard. I'm thinking back on it, and I dislike pretty much every keyboard part in Damnation. Some fit on Ghost Reveries, but some parts just seem really forced in (we all know what I'm talking about).
|
I like the keyboards on Damnation more then the ones on GR, to tell the truth. Weakness and TRTD worked well.
|
The mellotron makes Damnation for me.
I think Per will be more integrated with the band on the next album when compared with GR, so it should be better. |
i was thinking of recording me playing some opeth on guitar. I can play all of Black Rose Immortal, April Ethereal, Demon of The Fall and and only some of Blackwater Park, The Moor, Deliverance, Masters Apprentices. If anyone would like me to record any of these let me know.
|
If you learn all of The Moor, I would like to hear that.
|
If you learn all of The Moor, I would like to hear that.
So would I. |
I can play most of it up to the acoustic part and can play only the first couple acoustic sections. I suppose tomorrow i can record it.
|
I don't know if I like this "Per" guy. He tickles ivories. That can't be natural.
|
The mellotron makes Damnation for me.

I just think the sounds Opeth made with simply guitars is way better than using a synthesizer to get any sound you need. NP: The Drapery Falls |
Yeah, the 'boards pretty much replaced guitar leads...
|
That's very sad...
|
For The Moor, I'm at the riff after the verse riff. I havnt practiced the part yet though.

sorry, but I chose that name at the time and then opened my mind to much better music than Nu metal like Opeth. |
I just bought the latest Opeth album today. It's sick.
It really is. Overall great creepy atmosphere, some amazing songs. I'd rate GoP, Baying of the Hounds and Harlequin Forest in with their best, and Isolation Years in with their best clean tracks. Beneath the Mire and Hours Of Wealth just below the rest, with Atonement and The Grand Conjuration among my least favourite of their work, though still half decent tracks. The progressive atmosphere of the whole album I just love though, even though it has two weak tracks. When I compare it to something like Blackwater park which has four of their very best songs, and three of my least favourite. I've given up on trying to rate Opeth albums I think. All I know is Still life, Ghost Reveries, Damnation, Blackwater Park (Plus the bonus tracks) and My Arms, Your Hearse are amazing albums. |
I think Isolation Years should have been a big longer and had a few more parts thrown in. It seems so.......unfinished i guess. But thats just me. I know i said this is my least favorite album by them but Ghost of Perdition is one of the best songs they've ever made along with Baying of The Hounds.
|
To be honest, I think i'd like it if Opeth started making some shorter songs.
I love their work in general, don't get me wrong, I have nothing against long songs at all, but I was thinking, in order for Opeth to do something different... song structure wise, making a fairly short death metal song would be something fresh. Something like Demon of the Fall, maybe shorter. |
