Theory and such make the process much easier, because writing things isn't as much of a guess-and-check situation. You [I]know[/I] that this note over this note will not sound good, instead of just thinking "if I hit this fret here over this chord, will it sound good?"

As someone who has written music while taking lessons, it does improve one's ability to convey the musical message that you have in head.
