ive got the album, i was just wondering what you guys thought of it, because i havent listened to it all yet. i was uploading it, got through ghost of perdition then went to play guitar for a bit so i didnt hear the others, but ghost of perdition was good :)

Tyr 04-09-2006 12:29 PM

Ghost of Perdition's good, but there's definitely some less good songs on the album as well. Not bad songs all in all, but with Opeth's usual standard... some of the songs aren't up to that standard.

Sixty Ton Angel 04-09-2006 12:38 PM

Hey guys, just picked up Still Life.
Ripping it to my computer and listening to the Moor now.

How do you all compare it with the rest of their albums?
(First Opeth album I've bought)

RustedPieces 04-09-2006 12:39 PM

Reverie/Harlequin Forest is a strange song. It's not bad IMO though.

The bit starting at 2:54 kind of reminds me of the part in Serenity Painted Death that starts at 1:30

Never heard Serenity Painted Death, is it any good?

JamJar 04-09-2006 12:50 PM

Reverie/Harlequin Forest has a good start but goes nowhere and gets boring. In general I like Ghost Reveries apart from Atonement, The Grand Conjurarion and Reverie/Harlequin Forest getting boring.

I think Still Life is their best album, followed by My Arms, Your Hearse with Blackwater Park on third place, but a lot of people rate Blackwater Park as the best. Most people will either say Still Life or Blackwater Park, in my experience.

The Grand Conjuration is a decent song, but it's kind of mainstream death metal if ya know what i mean.

Yup.

TGC is only boring to me on the album because of how repetative the riffs are. Live, the atmosphere it creates is amazing.

Serenity Painted Death is one my favourite songs of all time.

I've never really got TGC. I see what you mean about it being more mainstream death, and in general, I am far from a death metal fan.

Yeah same here, their ballads are what got me into them, mostly Damnation. THen i slowly got into their heavier stuff.

Sixty Ton Angel 04-09-2006 12:58 PM

I've barely got anywhere with Still Life yet still I'm blown away.

Heard a lot of good things about Serenity Painted Death too so I'm looking forward to reaching it :thumb:

Look forward to my favourite Opeth riff ever in that song as Mikael growls, 'White faced haggard grin.' Best use of a pinched harmonic ever. Still Life is so amazing.

Sixty Ton Angel 04-09-2006 01:04 PM

Indeed I shall, maybe my dad will be back in time to hear it too.
I'm sure he'll love it

Zomg, 10 more pages to teh evil number!!!!

Shadius 04-09-2006 02:03 PM

When we get to 666 pages, we all just need to post "DEMON, DEMON OF THE FALL" repeatedly until we hit the next page.

This will show our tr00ness.

It's the best thing they've ever done. Judging by GR, it'll stay that way for a while, too.

I only see 437 pages. You crazy kids.
I only see 437 pages. You crazy kids.
Ah yeah, depends on how many posts per page you have.

The Moor was probably the song that stood out the most first time through.
Shame I can't get it onto my Walkman

Not even close to Still Life though.

Tyr 04-09-2006 05:39 PM

Or MAYH or Blackwater Park.

Crysiss 04-09-2006 06:38 PM

Still,Great album:thumb:

Im listening to alot of Orchid lately.

Det_Nosnip 04-09-2006 09:40 PM
He did, on My Arms, Your Hearse.
And he actually did a surprisingly good job on it. Unfortunately the poor production makes it hard to hear sometimes, but there are some rather ace lines that he threw in on there.

No it's not!!

Sixty Ton Angel -Good choice of first album to get. :thumb:

Still Life has remained my fav for ages now.
The riffage and acoustic picking just peak as the best stuff they've ever written, for me anyway.

Serenity Painted Death is a fvcking good song, as you probably know by now. :)

Is anyone able to play the acoustic picking bit near the end of SPD?
I mean the a-minor part where he keeps hitting the high e in odd timing.
It's got my head fcked. ;/

Are there any other songs like Demon of the Fall on MAYH cause that song kicks ***

penelope weird hands 04-10-2006 02:35 AM

^I suggest getting all the songs.
The entire album is heavy as hell.

My Arms, Your Hearse is in second place now for me, as far as album ratings go.

JamJar 04-10-2006 02:42 AM

^No 3 for me. Still Life > BWP > MAYH. The favourite album list will begin again no doubt.

Is there many other progressive bands like Opeth because I havent heard any the closest prgressive band I have heard to Opeth is maybe Tool

penelope weird hands 04-10-2006 02:59 AM

In my experience, there aren't many similar bands to Opeth.

I've heard Woods of Ypres mentioned before, and Katatonia.. I haven't heard them myself so I don't know if they're a decent comparison.

Ask one of the regulars, probably the threadstarter, Flynn, if there are similar artists.
I don't know when he comes on here, but he'll see your post no doubt.

I'm sure there are others who can help you, just not me. heh.

JamJar 04-10-2006 02:59 AM

I could recommend you some modern prog bands to check out who a lot of Opeth/Tool fans like. Dream Theater, Dredg, Nevermore (Not really prog but a lot of Opeth fans like them), Pain Of Salvation (I've been completely obsessed with these recently. Listen Now!), Porcupine Tree, Riverside, Symphony X (I don't like them but a lot of people do)

New name Spiraldown 04-10-2006 03:04 AM

Ill give Dream Theater a try and also some others that you mentioned

Deth 04-10-2006 10:35 AM

Try some Agalloch. They aren't that musically similar to Opeth, but both are progressive bands with a lot of contrast.

Also, Woods of Ypres latest album reminded me of Opeth.

Crysiss 04-10-2006 12:37 PM

I find it odd his UN is Numetal:( , Even though hes getting into progressive music.

Try out Nevermore man:thumb:

Try some Novembre.

Shadius 04-10-2006 12:57 PM

A lot of those prog metal bands with death vocals and acoustic breaks just remind me of bad versions of Opeth though. Without Mikael's clean vocals and songwriting they don't sound anywhere near as good.

gmoneyguy 04-10-2006 12:58 PM

also...
Lacrimas Profunde
Novembers Doom (I highly recommend them)
Vintersorg
Pain of Salvation

Yeah Porcupine Tree is awesome. Didn't Steven Wilson produce a few Opeth albums?

Yes he did.
BlackWater Park
Deliverance
Damnation.

All exellent albums, I prefer Wilon's styyle of production to the guy who did production on Ghost Reveries.
Only after hearing that album I realized what a huge influence Wilson had on Opeth's albums
