lol black swan was terribad

JoshIsNumber3 02-17-2011 02:20 PM

lmao black swan just showed that movie goers have no sense of subtlety or intelligence

Aes820 02-17-2011 04:51 PM

I heard True Grit is a'ight.
lmao black swan just showed that movie goers have no sense of subtlety or intelligence
That would be a great argument, if it hadn't garnered largely positive reviews from actual film critics. Presumably they have also been bamboozled by the loud noises and bright lights?

By the by, I haven't seen it, but any excuse for an argument.

fingers mccoy 02-17-2011 06:54 PM

black swan i haven't seen but every single facebook post i've seen on the issue has put me off

spirit 02-17-2011 07:33 PM
black swan i haven't seen but every single facebook post i've seen on the issue has put me off
I've only seen one facebook post on the issue, and that was from a guy whose opinion I actually trust on films. It wasn't terribly complimentary, which is a shame. I'd still like to see it.

Actually, I've probably seen half a dozen posts saying "OMG, black swan was AMAZING", but that's not exactly a review, and it was probably from people whose opinions I don't value, seeing as how they posted that as a status.

lol appeal to authority

fingers mccoy 02-17-2011 08:18 PM
lol appeal to authority
critics are ostensibly celebrated for their ability to recognise and promote articles of subtlety and intelligence

The Transporter 02-17-2011 09:27 PM

i enjoy stuff because i like it, not because some dumbass critic tells me to

Zed_Leppelin 02-17-2011 09:30 PM

hey lod. tbh thought this place had closed down. who knew. sup doods?

spirit 02-17-2011 09:47 PM

Not much. Liking the goose.
i enjoy stuff because i like it, not because some dumbass critic tells me to
That's why I'm not arguing with your point - you can't argue with an opinion.

Well, you can try, but there's not much point.

JoshIsNumber3 02-17-2011 10:45 PM
critics are ostensibly celebrated for their ability to recognise and promote articles of subtlety and intelligence
if there's ever an objective set of qualifications that make up the concept of what a critic may or may not be, then that may be a granted point. until then, simply acquiescing someone's superiority because they have the title of critic = appeal to authority

Giga 02-18-2011 12:21 AM

shut up josh, the only reason i go on the internet anymore is so i can bathe in logical fallacies

fingers mccoy 02-18-2011 06:59 AM

but that's not what's happening

the fact that there is widespread critical acclaim for this movie suggests it has some merit

or at least that it is not entirely crude and stupid

The Transporter 02-18-2011 08:22 AM

have you actually seen the movie? if anything its a textbook definition of why critics are dumbasses

fingers mccoy 02-18-2011 08:28 AM

no i haven't

i probably won't like it cause it sounds dumb

Epidemechanical 02-18-2011 09:32 AM

i really dont think you guys understand the fallacy of appeal to illegitimate authority

appealing to an authority is perfectly reasonable assuming you are doing so towards a field of knowledge in which said authority is an expert

IE it is reasonable, in making an argument in neurology, to appeal to the authority of a neurologist.

it is also equally reasonable to appeal to the authority of a veteran movie critic on the subject of film quality. Roger Ebert, for example, has seen literally every single movie ever made, has made his own, has worked in the industry, and has a keen eye for narrative, technical features, acting, etc. Therefore, it is logical to appeal to his authority

if "appeal to legitimate authority" was a fallacy then we'd never fucking learn anything

fingers mccoy 02-18-2011 09:37 AM

i don't think an appeal to authority, legitimate or not, can ever be truly sound, but it's still perfectly rational.

also josh was saying people who likes the movie are dumb. critics are supposed to engage with their subject intelligently, so if they like a movie it's fair to say that liking it probably doesn't make you dumb.

spirit 02-18-2011 09:57 AM

Roger Ebert
Good shout.

3.5 / 5 (or 70%)

Which is slightly lower than the mean score of the "Top Critics" on Rotten Tomatoes.

77%
