^^^ Its only really the tonally elitist people that notice the difference..

my tone isnt that important really. I dont aim for the perfect lows and perfect mids and perfect highs, and all that tonal mumbo-jumbo. As long as the bass doesnt sound crappy, im happy :)

I just think theres more important things than a "perfect tone"

Radiobass81 05-15-2005 10:57 AM

Only the tonally elitist people notice different in tone? Jamie, I expected better from you :(.

Maple is brighter in sound than rosewood. It seems apparent on most basses I've played.

Radiobass81 05-15-2005 10:59 AM
Nope. But the combination of me not wanting a Fender (which I have played), and Fender 5s being notoriously bad compared to something that would suit me better (Warwick, Ibanez etc) seals the deal. If it was free, I'd take it, sure, but I can think of things I'd rather buy.

Actually, I want a Winters Custom, but can't afford it. I can't afford anything, so its all a bit of a moot point.
If you never have played a Fender 5, how do you know it's B is "notorious"? It is no worse then most Ibanez basses, and if you can't afford a Winters custom, you probably can't afford a Warwick, so a pretty tight B is out of the questin anyway.

I love maple for its blues sound ...im a maple kind of guy

I would actually find rosewood more appropiate for blues, as it sounds darker.

Sorry sir! </sarcasm> :D

But i just dont notice much of a difference tonally between maple and fretboard. You have to listen really closely. Its like people that think different wood tops change the tone, yeah, probably. By a tiny bit! Thats basically what i was getting at :)

irishslappop 05-15-2005 11:08 AM

oh oh were talkin about fretboards....................idk ive only really played on rosewood

alienking84 05-15-2005 11:09 AM

Rosewood and Maple I think both sound good with blues. Maple on a guitar for sure.

why? is someone in your band lagging or not pulling their weight?

Radiobass81 05-15-2005 11:44 AM

Supposedly (as I have not played a bass $3,000 or over), Wal is one of the few manufacturers who put quality over price.

Not like Alembics, which sell their pickups for $700...

Foxfire 05-15-2005 11:44 AM
I'm seriously considering a Conklin GT4 as my next bass.
I wouldn't mind a matching GT-4 for my GT-7. Or a GT-5. *shrug*
