Yeah naming instruments is definitely only allowed if you're BB King.

Spaceman Spiff 08-31-2010 10:45 AM

Well, I'm not saying it's not allowed... I just don't see the point. If I'm naming my guitar, I might as well name my TV, computer, couch, etc.

I just play it. It needs no name.

Epidemechanical 08-31-2010 10:46 AM

who is that ugly black guy in the pic?

Spaceman Spiff 08-31-2010 10:50 AM

He's the singer of the band. He's doing a pretty good job, too. We need to tell him to stop sounding so feminine when he sings, though.

FunkMetalBass 08-31-2010 11:05 AM

I'm still waiting for both my wine and that cheapie 3-band preamp to arrive. They should both be here, hopefully, by the end of the week.

In the meantime, I'm building my girlfriend a desk. I'll be learning how to weld on Thursday so I should be on to fit & finish by early next week.

The next project on the list, after fixing the finish on that OLP, is to go back to my HXB-406 and possibly continue the conversion process to a fanned-fretless 6 (35" - 32").

FlamingCouch 08-31-2010 11:11 AM

Learning to weld? Oomph, that sounds awesome FMB.

I fully endorse this... sometimes I want to name an instrument and sometimes I do, but also a lot of times I've done that shortly afterwards it's kind of gone to shit. with my Jazzmaster I'll probably just eventually come up with some sort of reference for it... actually, come to think of it the guys and I jokingly call it my pimp cane thanks to the Juggernaut bitch video.

and I half-heartedly call my (seems like it'll never begin) project Jazz Bass Sombrero Dave, being that I bought it from a ebay user named Dave and it's a Mexi Jazz.

but anyways. What kinda welding FMB? Stick, wire-feed?

Spaceman Spiff 08-31-2010 11:20 AM

Calling it DJ Jazzy Jeff is the closest I'll probably ever get to naming an instrument. And, like, my Tele can be Castor Troy from Face-Off.

fatbandit 08-31-2010 12:52 PM

Are you fucking tiny, or is that a fucking massive guitar?

EADGCFBb 08-31-2010 12:58 PM
I've heard of it, but I've never been there. Perhaps I'll check it out at some point.

So, you wanna come to my place and play music sometime or what? Probably not? That's okay. Invitation is there, though.
Do you want to maybe play a show at Rancho sometime?

EADGCFBb 08-31-2010 12:58 PM
like who the fuck just tracks and then is all like "ok well who knows if it sounds good lets come back later" lol
What's it matter

Spaceman Spiff 08-31-2010 02:12 PM
Are you fucking tiny, or is that a fucking massive guitar?
I'm not tiny, but I'm not very big. 5'7, 150 pounds. And the guitar does have a bit of a big body. It's not very heavy and super comfortable to play, though.

Spaceman Spiff 08-31-2010 02:13 PM
Do you want to maybe play a show at Rancho sometime?
Most definitely. I've only been there once, the sound was decent but not great, but I'd still totally play there.

fatbandit 08-31-2010 02:58 PM

Even the neck looks big, not just the body. But if you're 5'7 that would probably explain it a bit.

Been doing a lot of programming in the last couple weeks, and it's made me think I kinda wanna learn to play drums. I love the idea of having a really nice small kit, suited more for kind of drum and bass sounds. Like maybe a 20" bass drum with double pedals, one 14" snare and one piccolo snare, a pair of hats and just one cymbal. Probably a crashable ride, maybe put a small splash/crash on top of it. Just seems really neat, and a bit different from the massive rock kits everyone always wants to play.

Though it would be much cheaper to just get an electric kit and just trigger Steven Slate Drums off it or something :p But tons gayer.
Most definitely. I've only been there once, the sound was decent but not great, but I'd still totally play there.
Cool. I can't guarantee anything at this point, but hook me up with some tracks when they're done and I'll see what I can do.

Do you have some sort of sway there? Or are you just looking to play a show together?

If it can help get us shows, I'll hook a couple of songs before we mix, though I'd prefer not to... Really, I just so badly want to get back into playing live.

I promote there rarely. Usually twice a month.

I would just need the songs to get an idea of your sound.

Oh, cool.

In that case, give me your email and I'll give you something to check. We'd love to get some shows going on, so if you could get something for us I'd be really appreciative.

I saw this band Datura there a few months ago. They were wicked but they've broken up, which is too bad, they were one of the few bands in the city that I really liked.

BenJammin 08-31-2010 10:13 PM

Playing live is the best.
Oh, look. A picture of my ripping on my Jazzmaster. I haven't actually named it or anything because I think that shit's lame, so I jokingly call it DJ Jazzy Jeff.

I asked because a page or two back someone asked who "the ugly black guy" was and now I'm even more lost. Interesting.

and I concur, playing live is indeed the best.

Yeah, that's just Raayl being Raayl. She's neither black nor ugly... also, not a guy.

FlamingCouch 09-01-2010 09:42 AM

Yikes.

I don't know if I ever asked for specs on the rig, Spiff. Whattaya got?

Hey and since I'm bored and can post attachments... stay tuned.

a shot one of the other band's members took of my gear at our show last Friday.

gonna try to find a full band shot.

gaslight 09-01-2010 09:50 AM

What the fuck is that in the middle? It looks like a light switch. Haha.

Spaceman Spiff 09-01-2010 09:50 AM

Guitars:
Fender Custom Shop Telecaster, chambered body
Fender Jazzmaster Lee Ranaldo sig
Ibanez ORM Omar Rodriguez-Lopez sig

Amp:
Vox AD100VT

Pedals:
Boss TU-2 - tuner
Ibanez Tubescreamer TS8 (I think? Maybe TS9?)
EHX Big Muff
Digitech Whammy IV
Boss BF-3 flanger
Danelectro Cool Cat chorus
Danelectro Dan-Echo delay
Line 6 PodXT Live

Let me see if I can get a picture.

FlamingCouch 09-01-2010 09:56 AM
What the fuck is that in the middle? It looks like a light switch. Haha.
foot switch for the Jazz Chorus.

from the left (by the martian) to right:

- Danelectro French Toast octave distortion
- my friend Simon's custom-built 'Chicken' pedal - built with the schematics of a Russian model big muff pedal.
- Boss chromatic tuner
- Jazz Chorus foot switch.
- Boss flanger
- Boss digital delay
- wah wah

The ammo case is for tools, cables, strings. The martian is for support.

gaslight 09-01-2010 09:58 AM

So the signal chain starts with the wah? That is groovy.

FlamingCouch 09-01-2010 10:01 AM
So the signal chain starts with the wah? That is groovy.
I actually plug the guitar into the french toast and the wah trails into the amp... the signal chain was entirely unintentional and was simply the way I arranged the pedals before I fashioned up that miserable, shitty excuse for a pedal board that I absolutely love to pieces.

Unless that's how signal chains actually work; I dunno, I just drive the bus. Simon tried to explain the whole thing to me also but I basically adhere to 'if it's broke don't fix it'. The only pedal that is absolutely always on is the delay anyway and everything else is just flourishes.

gaslight 09-01-2010 10:03 AM

Nah that's cool I was looking at the picture back to the front, going in order from wah back to the other end would be pretty unusual.

FlamingCouch 09-01-2010 10:05 AM

Ah.

I might play around with it sometime, I want to get this phase shifter that's for sale on the cheaps in town so after that I might re-organize that board or just actually build a good one from scratch and then experiment with the pedals. I was pretty happy with the sound I got from the get-go anyways though so there's a good chance I'll just keep it as is.

gaslight 09-01-2010 10:07 AM

It's always worth trying different combinations just in case you come up with something really good and unexpected.

I've finally come into a decent surplus financially so I'm looking at getting my first new pedal in years, a nice compressor for my bass.

FlamingCouch 09-01-2010 10:10 AM

I do agree, that's very true. But I usually just stumble upon one good thing and go with it. One of these days though I'll most likely switch it up for the hell of it.

I actually plugged my Stratocaster in the other day and was amazed with how, once again, it felt like absolute shit. I'll need to swap strings and clean it and probably re-arrange the board to get something good out of it if I ever want to use it live again.

and after farting around with Simon's set-up for the band, I was somewhat spoiled by playing bass through effects. Now I almost want to plug my Jazz in through a bunch of crap too. :|

Spaceman Spiff 09-01-2010 10:12 AM

Okay, the picture is sideways but you can see the pedals. My friend built the pedal board for me. It's a real heavy duty and durable case. It has a top that has latches and the whole thing locks up nice and secure.

I don't know what that is?

My friend got all the materials from Home Depot and built this sweet case. I stuck some velcro down and stuck my pedals to it and bam, pedal board.
Can you see the picture as an attachment?

Yessir. :) as long as it's on a site that isn't restricted (which is almost anything) I'm good to go.

Spaceman Spiff 09-01-2010 10:18 AM

Oh, no. Not that. Planning on adding some padding, though, because that would be sweet.
