I listened to the last half of GR yesterday and realized Reverie/Harlequin Forest is actually not bad, not Opeth's best but still has some nice parts. GR is a great album, just not quite up to Opeth standards
|
Good thing to, that poor guy was at risk of hearing an average Opeth song.
pfft, just because you don't like the clean vocals, picky bastard. its a great song. *sticks tongue out at you* |
Ofcourse they have, it's like, their most popular record.
I saw The Grand Conjuration live before GR was even released.
Me too. :chug: I have to say my first impression wasn't too good. It's definitely not as good of a song without all the atmospherics and production add-ons. Recently I've really been into Opeth's earlier stuff. I have newfound love for Orchid.. I absolutely adore it right now. My collection (of purchased albums) is almost complete, I now only need Still Life. |

Awwww I sowwy, :-*, does that help? |
Awwww I sowwy, :-*, does that help?
Nope. In other news, ever since I bought Orchid, I just kinda found a new appreciation for it, and now I really like it. Forest of October is probably my favorite, though they are quite good. |
Same with me. I bought MAYH, Orchid and Morningrise together, and they've been the only cd in my player the past two weeks.
|
Im really into Black Water Park right now.
|

:P Listening to that as i type Opeth are robots, noone human can make music with this much depth and skill, surely... |
BWP = teh ownage.
Does anybody have any info at all for the February 24th gig, in Hartford, CT? As I said before, my grandma lives 15 minutes away from there, and it turns out the gig is right smack dab in the middle of my February break. |
Another reason why it sucks living in the UK :(
|
Doesn't the venue have a web site?
|
They have nothing on the concert, last time I checked (yesterday).
|
i want to hear orchid so badly! i read some of the lyrics and i thought they were awesome.
actually opeth lyrics in genral are awesome. no cliches, and they usually dont depend on rhyming. i love how they describe things, like in the moor about the man coming out of exile. my fave lyrics ever. :) |
Nope.

Forest of October is probably my favorite, though they are quite good.
I generally like to go for their older releases. I think Morningrise is their masterpiece and Orchid was something truly special and far beyond it's time, especially for a new band. My favorite song from that album has got to be "The Twilight is My Robe". Runner-up would be Blackwater Park and Still Life. To me, their last 3 releases are just kinda "meh". |
One of the things that amazes me most about Opeth is how close together the album releases are. For how many riffs and how intricate the guitar and arrangements are on a lot of their songs it's crazy that they put that stuff together in a year or two.
'95 '96 '98 '99 '01 '02 '03 '05 Thats crazy. 8 albums in ten years. Compare that to Tool who, in the same time frame (95 - 05) have released two albums. Most artists might manage 4 or 5, but eight? It's insane. I know they had a lot of stuff already written back when they formed in '90, the stuff they put on Orchid and Morningrise, and maybe to a lesser extent My Arms Your Hearse, though I imagine most or all of that was written afterwards due to the change in sound (more dissonant and everything). Still, it's amazing. |
I still need Still Life and MYAH and Orchid and Deliverance and damnit its aggravating! ah!

Tools my favorite band, with Opeth in second. :p |

Ehhh, Lateralus is good but overrated and Opeth is better than it. Man, I'm really hoping to make it to one of the gigs on this tour. How much do Opeth tickets usually cost? |

/runs
Sad but true... In my opinion, I mean... /flees as well |
Any guesses on whether Dark Tranquillity or Devin Townsend Dand are playing first? I'm hoping it's Townsend so that DT can get a longer set.
|
Devin are opening, and DT are the main support. DT will get the longer set.
|
My favorite Opeth albums are Blackwater Park and Damnation.
I personally don't like GR, there seem to be alot of very lost moments in it. |
That song starts off really weak, although it does get better. It's still probably the second worst on GR, after Hours of Wealth. THAT song starts off kind of nice and then just craps out and goes nowhere for the last 4 minutes.
Woah, our opinions are very different. I love the whole of Beneath The Mire, and the solo at the end of Hours Of Wealth is amazing IMO. Along with the singing before it. |

/runs
I don't judge music by how people rate it so much anyway. Calling things overrated is... well, I don't know. I prefer to enjoy music rather than try and find things I don't like about it. Tool and Opeth are two of the best bands i've heard, and like any music they can get old if you overplay them. I like Tool a little more than Opeth. For me, Tool have two or three high standard (I like most of the songs on them) albums, Opeth have four or five. With the rest of the albums being merely good. Even with Opeth having more albums I enjoy, Tool have done it more for me in the past, and I think that they put more effort into the construction/editing of their songs. I mean, Mikael is a musical genius for me, but he can be almost half assed about putting his segments of songs together sometimes. Luckily for him it sounds good, because he knows what he's doing, but it dosn't always sound amazing like it should from him. Tool, on the other hand, seem to work out their kinks and such in the studio more. The amount of Tool's releases, especially when compared to Opeth's just seems ridiculous though. |
I enjoy Tool occasionally, but I really don't see how their held in such high regard.
|
Metal fans might not. There are far more complex musicans out there, and Tool don't really conform to any particular genre like a lot of metal does, so there's so scene for their music, which could slightly put some people off without really knowing it. Like, if you like a death metal band, you'll probably like a handful of other similar bands, but with Tool, you won't necesserally like any other bands along with them. (I've heard Cog compared to Tool, and I don't really like them)
Why I like Tool? I love the lyrics, and Maynards voice. Danny's drumming is amazing, I like the usually high register, interesting basslines, and Adam has some interesting rhythm guitar. I think when they come together they make an interesting, unique sound. *shrug* |
I enjoy Tool occasionally, but I really don't see how their held in such high regard.
I agree. Really good, just slightly over rated for my liking. But still, they have a very interesting style, which i love in a band. Think thats why i love Opeth so much, because they dare to do things differently. Plenty of people are going to complain about how you cant go from a metal riff to a finger picked acoustic part, but Opeth do that because they want to. And that fking rules! \m/ |
