Thor 04-03-2006 06:56 PM

Oh, Opeth is already sitting strong at #4 on my favorite bands list...and that's quite a feat.

Toaster 04-03-2006 06:57 PM

They're still my #1 favourite band.

Shadows 04-03-2006 06:58 PM
Ben, what are the other 4 ?
Children of Bodom, Arsis, Cradle of Filth, and Shadows Fall.

Thor 04-03-2006 07:00 PM

All of those are excellent picks, especially Bodom and Arsis. Cradle of Filth is still in my top 20 probably, but they sit on the lower part.

...but what about Dissection? :thumb:

Stormrider 04-03-2006 07:03 PM
Children of Bodom, Arsis, Cradle of Filth, and Shadows Fall.
Oh ok. The only band in those 4 I've heard stuff from is Bodom and a song I dont remember from Shadows Fall.

Opeth are in my top 5.

Thor 04-03-2006 07:04 PM

Just because Shadows Fall has been mentioned, I have to say this: their cover of "Welcome to the Machine" owns.

Shadows 04-03-2006 07:07 PM

Dissection is up there too, probably my favorite black metal band along with Emperor. Unfortunately, their discography isn't as extensive as most bands that have been around that long, so they don't give much to work on.

Plus Maha Kali really blows.

That's pretty true, their first two albums are the only ones that are really worth checking out. But when they hit, they hit really really really damn hard. I mean...Storm of the Light's Bane just happens to be the best black metal album ever.

TojesDolan 04-03-2006 07:47 PM

Dissection is where it's at. I like the instrumentals... very.. hobbitish.

Anyhow, Opeth is in my top favorite bands, why not. I don't have a top 5 though.

God Emperor slays. I love that band so much. I've also seen a bit of trend with them, where they're reguarded as crap by the "elitists".

Opeth are number two for me, behind Tool and infront of Nevermore. Anything after that changes monthly.

Killtacular 04-03-2006 10:07 PM
AJFA is where its at. :D
No.

Kelvin 04-03-2006 11:38 PM

What do you guys think that best mellow song opeth made? Mine is probably closure. I just love that song. And when they played it live...wow that was amazing.

Shadows 04-03-2006 11:38 PM

Definitely Hope Leaves.

Kaiwaz 04-03-2006 11:49 PM
Opeth is basically the best band to emerge since Metallica.:
That statement is self-biased. Metallica emerged in the mainstream way more then Opeth did, but I see your point...
What do you guys think that best mellow song opeth made? Mine is probably closure. I just love that song. And when they played it live...wow that was amazing.
Yeah, Closure is great. I love playing that third riff.
My favs, for the moment, would be Epilogue or Patterns In The Ivy II.

If you like Emperor, you should try Peccatum. Formed from one of the former members of Emperor and his wife. It's really dark, dark music. It's in a sort of avant garde, prog metal style. Really good stuff.

As for my favourite bands, they vary between Opeth, Tool, Pain Of Salvation and The Mars Volta frequently.

And Hope Leaves is my favourite mellow Opeth song. My god I love it.

Shadius 04-04-2006 04:49 AM

To bid You farewell, Benighted, Face of Melinda, Windowpane, In my time of need, Hope Leaves, To Rid the Disease, Isolation Years... No, I just can't decide which is their best mellow song.

Opeth are in my top 5 favourite bands ever, and I can't see them being budged for a long time. They're up there with Tool, Radiohead and Muse. Maybe with In Flames, TMV and APC worming their way near the top 5.

Tyr 04-04-2006 12:16 PM

Face of Melinda is my favourite mellow song, with Closure or Windowpane second.

Opeth are absolutely in my top 5 list, together with /in no particular order) Tool, Queensr˙che, Nile and Gamma Ray.

TojesDolan 04-04-2006 12:37 PM

It's all in isolation years. That's the most brilliant mellow song.

JamJar 04-04-2006 12:58 PM
It's all in isolation years. That's the most brilliant mellow song.
That song is pretty amazing. They're too good at writing mellow and heavy.

MidnightRider 04-04-2006 01:04 PM

My favorite mellow song would be Windowpane or To Bid You Farewell.

Opeth are definitely in my top 5 favorite bands. The others are Porcupine Tree, Pink Floyd, Tool, and Radiohead.

Killtacular 04-04-2006 01:05 PM

Top V favourite bands:

Pink Floyd
Tool
The Beatles
Godspeed You Black Emperor!
Opeth.

I really love Harvest. It's just so awesomely awesome.

MidnightRider 04-04-2006 01:07 PM

Scruples, you have good taste in music. ;)

That's probably the best way to describe that song. :thumb:

I love your top 5 as well, but I haven't heard Godspeed before. I should probably check them out because of all the hype they get.

It killed my internets. Torrents are bad for my internets. :(

Thor 04-04-2006 03:14 PM

That's a bummer. I've been using it for a few months now and it's been great. It's miles above LimeWire.

JamJar 04-04-2006 03:16 PM

I've been stealing things from Soul Seek recently. But I only use that if I can't find what I'm looking for on www.allofmp3.com.

Opeth - Still Life (4 weeks)
Soilwork - A Predator's Portrait (4 weeks)
A Wilhelm Scream - Ruiner (4 weeks, growing)
Against Me! - Searching For A former Clarity (4 weeks)
Agalloch - The Mantle (3 weeks)
Lykathea Aflame - Elvenfris (3)
Behemoth - Demigod (3)
Alice In Chains - Dirt (3)

I logged it, downloaded a file, then returned and my internet wasn't responding. Then, my iPod died and I was like

damn you torrents!

probably not related at all, but I'm not using them anyway.

Haha, probably not. Lists are fun though and it gives us a structured way to talk about things.

Crysiss 04-04-2006 05:23 PM

Ok ok

Whats the funniest thing Mikael said at a concert?

I thought it was pretty funny when Mikael was making fun of Mendez' horizontal headbanging

Thor 04-04-2006 05:26 PM

This is going to go on for a long time. Mikael says tons of funny things at shows.

Crysiss 04-04-2006 05:32 PM
