A role-playing game (RPG) is a game in which players assume the roles of characters in a fictional setting. Players take responsibility for acting out these roles within a narrative, either through literal acting, or through a process of structured decision-making or character development. Actions taken within the game succeed or fail according to a formal system of rules and guidelines.
would collecting items that improve your skills and raising your heart meter be considered character development? I think so even if there is no rigid experience system i'd called Zelda an action/adventure RPG, at the very least. |

Sam, I'm assuming you haven't played Pokemon Black/White yet?

"JRPGs" are *not* RPGs. choosing your own name and gear does not make it a role-playing game. role-playing means playing a role. a GM - or the game itself in the case of a video game - presents a situation, and you are allowed to act according to the role you are playing. this does not happen in "JRPGs". they are story-driven, and completely void of role-playing, much like e.g. Heavy Rain.
if you want role-playing, buy the Pathfinder core rules book and a set of dice, and get a group of friends together. |
