Brilliant, I thoroughly enjoyed that. I'm saving it.

Question: Does writing an essay on a piece of self-reflective fiction make it even less ficitonal?
The Crying of Lot 49?

Not anymore. I sold it back to the university bookstore because I needed the money for this years books.
Damn, I can only find unbelievably expensive copies.

So I was just looking at this essay that I have to write and it is stupidily simple. I have to discuss (aka tear apart) three arguments by climate change skeptics. The arguments are: the present climate change is part of a natural variation and is not caused by human actions, climate warming will be beneficial to human societies and the economic cost of stopping climate change would be too great so we should just going "business as usual". That is so easy considering that my TA gave me two great sites to use and I have enough information in one paragraph to dispel all of those arguments. Better get working on ti though.

I read it last year for the first time and LOVED it. Anyone ever heard of Robertson Davies? Well if you haven't go pick up his trilogy "the deptford trilogy", he truly is one of the great story tellers of the 20th century.

Thanks. :) I impressed my prof with it (a huge post-modernism literature freak), so I figured I was on to something with it.

As for your question... I don't have the mental capacity to really think about that right now.

About Pynchon... sorry. If I still had my copy, I'd send it to you. There should be a pretty cheap paperback out there, though. That's what we used.

I have this great recording of him reading a story overtop of wierd, feedback based guitar. I think Kurt Cobain was the guitarist actually. Very impressive piece of work, the writing and the guitar playing.

Efrim 11-13-2006 10:30 PM

That's a good price! Thanks Ben.

BenJammin 11-13-2006 10:42 PM

"As Birds Bring Forth The Sun" by Allistair McLeod is another very good read.

Never actually read any of his stuff. I just really got back into reading last year so I haven't read a lot of stuff. I am way too busy with all of my school stuff right now to read anything for my enjoyment, even though I am slowly working through some of CS Lewis' stuff.

If you're into philosophy, you might appreciate this. I just bought a book entitled "Voltaire's Bastards" So far, it appears to be a Neo-Romanticist book. Heard of it?
sounds interesting. im reading a book called "the god delusion" by Kepler right now. its amazing. ill look into that one though, i haven't read very much romantic text.

Already read it.

Spaceman Spiff 11-13-2006 10:47 PM

Ben, did you listen to that Decemberists show? Or any of it?

I ask because there's one part that makes me laugh everytime.

During 16 Military Wives, the crowd is doing the "la di da di da" part, but not too loudly, so Colin says, "That wasn't very loud. Montreal was way louder," so the crowd is then about 10 times louder than the previous time, he says, "Whoa! Them's fightin' words!"

Makes me laugh... maybe because I'm Torontonian...

I saw it, but I found out that shipping will more than double the costs, so I'm just getting the two.

BenJammin 11-13-2006 10:57 PM

Ah, well. That sucks.
