Idk, Symphony X have a couple of songs that I really like, but I can't get through an entire album. Too much proggy stuff for my taste.

BludgeonySteve 09-05-2010 02:53 PM

For me there is no such thing as too much proggy neoclassical wankery and a thick, powerful vocals. I can't wait for their new album, as their last one way my favorite. Although I would prefer more of a New Mythology Suite style and they will likely just do Paradise Lost except even more proggy. Either way I can't see it being bad.

BludgeonySteve 09-05-2010 05:27 PM

Actually I take that back, I prefer The Odyssey and Paradise Lost. NMS was just hte first one I ever listened to so I'm partial towards it. Goddamnit everything they do is so awesome.

Shadows Within 09-05-2010 08:42 PM

haha yeah I never considered their stuff to be proggy enough that it's unlistenable, thats what i like about them, it's a good balance.

although I tend to skip over the really long song's since that seems to be where most of it is anyway lol

Morumbar 09-06-2010 03:09 AM

Well, I mean it's mostly the Dream Theater-like licks and stuff that bug me.

Shadows Within 09-06-2010 11:20 AM

is anyone excited for Star One's new album? it looks to be epic so far, a bit heavier than most of Arjen's stuff.

Savage Circus huh , that would be woth a check since I liked the first one.

Yay for Firewind and Demons & Wizards upcoming release.

Stormrider 09-12-2010 11:32 AM

I've actually never checked out Savage Circus..

Blind Guardian in Montreal November 23rd. Shall be the best 2 or so hours of my life :p

In the last month and a half, BG and Demons and Wizards have been pretty much 90% of what I've been listening to. The self-titled album is fucking excellent. Second one not so much, but it has a couple really good songs. (The Gunslinger is one of their best songs imo)

Deth 09-12-2010 11:37 AM

Touched by the Crimson King is a really good song too imo, but yeah it's not nearly as good or consistent as the first. Excited for new material.

Stormrider 09-12-2010 11:44 AM

Yeah, same.

Also, I think this might interest some of you...

"Blistering.com: You’re at the 15-year mark for Imaginations and the trend now is for band’s to play their seminal albums in full. Any temptation there?

Kursch: Yeah. We have discussed doing Nightfall In Middle Earth many, many times because that’s our best album. It has such a nice concept and you can bring actors onstage and extend the whole thing even more, but we have always given up the idea because I still believe that all of the albums do have a certain right to be featured.......We’ve always given up that idea, but once we get closer to the release of the orchestral project, anything is possible. We have to promote that album in the live situation, which will give me some headaches [laughs]. With that, we could have the orchestral stuff on one end, and Nightfall on the other. I don’t think anyone would be disappointed about it. "

Deth 09-12-2010 11:48 AM

pretty cool stuff

find it interesting he considers Nightfall their best album

jrowa001 09-12-2010 06:53 PM

i havent listened to Deomns & Wizards in a long time. i think Crimson King i heard before i heard of Blind Guardian lol.

also cant wait for new Firewind and Symhpony X.

anyone heard the new Pertness album? From the Beginning to the End is the name of it. it is really good. better than their debut which was great to begin with

Morumbar 09-13-2010 02:49 AM

Don't hate on me for saying this, but At The Edge Of Time is probably my favourite BG album.

ArcLite 09-13-2010 06:45 PM

No hate from me. It's pulling at the top slot for me too. I absolutely love the album front to back.

Man I haven't posted on here forever. Love the PM thread though :)

publicastration 09-13-2010 06:47 PM

i forgot this thread existed tbh

no one talks about pm here anymore

Morumbar 09-14-2010 10:41 AM

It's recently been reanimated

...

FROM THE DEAD

Listening to Manowar right now. Eric Adams is pretty Satan-tier.

But seriously, I like long tracks, but Achilles, Agony And Ecstasy In Eight Parts kind of sounds like it's a long track for the sake of being a long track, what with the ridiculously long drum solo.
Cool song, though, don't get me wrong. The bass guitar solo is pretty lame, though.

Morumbar 10-25-2010 07:29 AM

So I finally checked out Fairyland.

It's actually pretty good, but some parts are exactly what you'd expect from a band with such a name.

ArcLite 10-27-2010 06:55 PM

Okay I know the topic of discussion has moved on a bit from new BG, but is the orchestration on ATEOT pretty much the best composition you've heard in any modern music? After listening to the album over and over I still find the orchestral arrangements jaw dropping.

Shattered_Future 10-27-2010 09:31 PM

Not at all. If anything, the orchestral stuff never goes above average. Most of it is really bombastic and over the top and just kinda there as filler.

Tyler 10-27-2010 09:46 PM

I couldn't even get through the new BG. What do people see in this band? Especially the vocalist. The guy is fucking terrible.

Deth 10-27-2010 09:48 PM

that's cool

Tyler 10-27-2010 09:56 PM

Good answer, now I see the appeal.

Deth 10-27-2010 09:58 PM

how would you respond if somebody did that in the PtH thread?

we've all witnessed how effective forum responses are to changing opinions

limonade 10-27-2010 09:59 PM

that's cool
how would you respond if somebody did that in the PtH thread?

I'd at least explain myself.

Deth 10-27-2010 10:06 PM

sorry to disappoint

Tyler 10-27-2010 11:31 PM

I don't mind the guitar work and some of the pacing on the new one, even some of the theatrics, but they need someone who can actually sing as opposed to their current dude who just kind of hums off key and layers it forty five times over.

Deth 10-27-2010 11:32 PM

yeah sucks for you I guess

Sigwulf 10-28-2010 02:09 AM

I just found out about Gamma Ray their album: No World Order is rather awesome. especially the first 2 songs. the iluminati stuff is kinda gay but hey..

Morumbar 10-28-2010 10:34 AM
I couldn't even get through the new BG. What do people see in this band? Especially the vocalist. The guy is fucking terrible.
*Does not compute.*

Yeah, I should probably check them out sometime. Guitars seem to almost have a sort of thrashy feel to them.

So much fucking powermetal I still haven't gotten 'round to check out yet (e.g. new Rhapsody of Fire album).
