.... WOAH, WOAH WOAH.
WHAT exactly am I holstering to my penis?
A sturdy K-Bar knife or similar. Just point the sharp end the right way so you don't puncture your scrotum.
Just preparing for my own personal apocalypse, I guess.
Yeah that's more or less what this is preparing for in a kind of roundabout way. |
I have had an amp which isn't always visible to a crowd becase it's so low down. Don't want a single 2x12 again really. It's quite emasculating :(
Haha. 212s are not emasculating . |
I want a 2x12,
:upset: I got the OLP wired up. Everything seems to be working, but I wired the volume control backwards. **smacks foreahead** It sounds great, though, both passive and active. Now I just need to route a batter cavity, tighten up the wiring, and give it a setup. I've only put $65 into it so far (including the cost of the bass), and I probably wont put more than $10 more into it. It's been a fun project thus far. I'm excited to try to fix the paint chips. |
Yes, it has a Gain and a Master. But they kind of work together. They both produce different kinds of drive really. It isn't a clean amp.
I also don't think it's that pointless. When you think about it, it has a tilt bar and wheels, so providing there's no stairs (which it has skids for), it's a single one hand trip to a venue with it. With 2 2x12s, that's two two hand trips. Or even one two handed lift for a single 2x12. So it would look better, stand closer to my ears, be more convenient to move, look better and have some versatility ;) I think I've just convinced myself to be honest :p |
I think I broke my thumb at practice tonight. Music cans be t3h dangerows.
|
How did you do that you scamp?
|
Whoof. That bites, funky. I too am curious.
the group had a bit of a show last night, the last with our current drummer. Because I play guitar in that band I was going all wtf and losing picks left, right and center. I ended up just about cutting my hand open trying to strum... it's my electric/acoustic which I never play anymore, thanks to my Jazzmaster. but hey, nobody cared because you know I just played seven nation army's guitar solo and all the women were all over me. |

Well, obviously. Who actually plays seven nation army, it's like the hardest song ever to play amirite.
besides, when I have my own tunes to play, playing covers is just kind of a bummer... with the exception of Last Chance for a Slow Dance by Fugazi. That song rules. so anyways, I got a phone call from my mother a little while ago and she told me a bit of news to me... my dad was heading out to a business meeting at a golf course and was in a truck crash. Considering she's back in Ontario and he and I are both in two different (but close) towns in BC, I was pretty surprised not to have heard this first. But then she told me he hadn't called since shortly after the wreck, and didn't call this morning either. That was when a panic button went off in my head. Fortunately, we got ahold of the driver of the vehicle Dad was in, and everything's okay. They're back out on the links again today with some Imperial clients or something. but either way, it got me thinking, you know. but before I wax too philosophical let me just say Uh oh, fart. Uh oh, Fart. course I get my boxer shorts at K-Mart in Cincinnati. They've got my name on them. Yeah. Oh, also I forgot to specify: the reason I almost cut my hand open is because the action on the electric/acoustic is a bit of a bitch and it's hell to play and adjust. so when the pick is lost, watch out. at least with the Jazzmaster I can still fingerpick and feel a little more like I'm still playing bass. I feel like a total homo talking about gigging as a guitarist in the bass forum. :upset: |
Good thing he's all right.
What Jazzmaster do you have? I have the Lee Ranaldo sig. I'm not a big Sonic Youth fan or anything, but it's a damn fine guitar. I may be mod of the bass forum, but I don't play bass much these days. Talk to me about guitar stuff. |
Covers are great money, just not the kind of thing everyone has fun doing.
We have K-Mart here too and I believe I may have purchased boxer shorts from them at some point. If we're talking guitar tonight, I have a PRS SE in S/S/S configuration, a Maton acoustic EM225C, a Blackstar HT-5 amp and that's about all my guitar stories finished already. Hoping to have a Holy Grail reverb added to the family soon :). |
We play a few covers, generally more obscure stuff that we really like. We do a few Brainiac covers, we've done Turnover by Fugazi, we've done an At The Drive-In cover, we've also done Gouge Away by The Pixies. I generally like to stay away from them unless I'm really into the song.
Oh yeah, one time we did Paper Planes by MIA. We got a lot of love for it. |
Covers as part of an original band set are a very delicate matter for sure.
I just meant covers as part of a working band, different kettle of fish that way. |
Gaslight: yeah, I totally agree. and I actually do have a lot of fun playing some covers... thing is I always play totally obscure covers, stuff nobody else has heard of. Well I shouldn't say that, but more like your average top-40 bar-goer or whatever place I happen to be playing at... they haven't heard of them.
The K-Mart reference is from Rain Man, because Dustin Hoffman f'n rules. Spiff: Very, very nice on the Renaldo Jazzmaster. That thing looks absolutely bad-ace and I would love to tear it up on one. I'm pretty sure I have like the standard run-of-the-mill '62 reissue... or maybe it's the classic player, I'm really not sure. That's basically my pimp cane right there. I've got loads of pics of my actual one, but because I don't have an online presence on teh webbernets anymore very little of it is online save for like facebook. Although my buddy Simon (the bass player in the band at the moment) put up some live videos of us at http://www.hotdogstorm.com/riders/WHITE STAR PARACHUTE... I don't know if they ever did work, but whatever. if they did work, it should be a very interesting show to watch... hahah. Jordan, the guy on drums, replaced Chris for that show and tore it up, with only like two practices beforehand. That was our last real big show, per se, and the funniest part was it was such a wreck... improperly booked, improperly promoted, improperly managed (the co-ordinator called to confirm us a week before the gig, and a month after we announced our intention to play the gig) so there were only 20-30 people there but it was still a great time. Plus it started raining midway through our last song and that was just fucking spiritual, man. Unbelievable. I told the crowd before we started the last tune to turn around and look up at the sky and told them basically mother nature was coming in for a landing or something totally gay, hahah. it was a great time. Anyways. Yeah, I dunno. playing guitar right now is more out of necessity than anything... I still would way rather be playing bass but because it's my material and Simon wants me to write it all for whatever reason, I'm pretty much stuck on guitar. Which is funny because he's primarily a guitarist and he's better than me on guitar, and I'm probably a little better than him on bass if only for the natural flow of how I play, I guess. but whatever, I s'pose. Whatever gets the music out. |
It's weird like that hey. I always play bass at gigs but I do play guitar a lot at home and write heaps on guitar, but I've never played guitar as part of a band. I don't know who I'd get to play bass if I was busy on the guitar at the time.
|
Right. Well, my band focuses on originals. We're finishing up our fourth album right now. Our shows are generally about 45-60 minutes and we'll have two or three covers thrown in. Lately we've taken a Brainiac song that we always do (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J5DMQq4GXKE) and inserted it into this noise jam/song that's on our new album.
Oh yeah, we're preparing to play the new album front to back for our CD release show. |
What's the new album called?
I don't think I've heard the first three. |
If we're talking guitar tonight...
Woah, woah, woah. It's 1000 (Ten A.M.) here in Canadia. Wowzers. uh oh, if we're on gear... I just bought a BF-3 flanger last week from this gal who's selling her father-in-law's gear, and this week comes a Boss phase shifter. Simon quizzed me about the pedals and when I told him she had a phase shifter in the mix too he basically said "Oh shit, go for it dude. You'll become the Mars Volta with that thing." So of course, I laughed hard for a while. WARNING: only Spiff might get this part - when we play, I always use goofy psuedonyms to introduce us (at our first gig Chris on drums was Dave Collins, Simon on bass was Tom Beacon, Rhett on keys was Ludwig Amadeus Chopin and I was Timmy Page) so after I get that phase shifter when I make my introductions you know I'll have to call myself Omar Khadriquez-Lopez. |
It's weird like that hey. I always play bass at gigs but I do play guitar a lot at home and write heaps on guitar, but I've never played guitar as part of a band. I don't know who I'd get to play bass if I was busy on the guitar at the time.
I know exactly what you mean. I play as much of a 'lead bass guitar' as I can - my stuff is always full of notes and variation. I basically try and make it as pumped up as possible. So anytime I have to do it live and someone is playing bass for me, they don't play what I've done on bass so my powers go down a little because I keep thinking "god damn, I could be absolutely tearing it up on my bass right now!" But hey, whatever. Simon does a great job on the four strings and he's an absolute wunderkind at conducting and all... pretty much the man behind the scenes. At the same time, though, as I expand as a guitar player I have a hard time seeing someone else playing my guitar parts too. heh. narcissism. it's rough. Spiff - FOUR albums? holy crap, man! are they still in print? turnover - very, very nice. |
What's the new album called?
I don't think I've heard the first three.
Our albums: Generique Pop Musique - 2008 Population Control - 2008 Collapse - 2009 The Fields - 2010 We only printed Population Control due to... general disagreement and unhappiness by certain members in the band. We're not signed or anything, we just write and record a lot of music. We'll be getting The Fields printed when it's done, though, because we all feel that it's actually good. |
Guitar players hate playing the guitar parts I write because they never want to use my exact voicings, and if they won't do that, then I don't really want them playing it. So it ends up that it has to be me doing it if I want it to be how I wrote it.
|
Couch, what other pedals do you have? Are you a big collector?
Also, here's us doing Turnover: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mnzqtzAUpvo Oh, and here's me and my Tele. It's beautiful, I know. :D |
Exactly - it's like that with a lot of my basslines. because I play my bass like a guitar, most people don't feel it really meshes with what I'm trying to do. Then I just think of Geddy Lee and laugh at those people in my head.
On the entirely different spectrum, I play my guitar with bass just about maxed out so it's a pretty heavy chunky kinda sound. I use a Jazz Chorus and have a digital delay that's my absolute main-stay and is always on too, so it always makes a beautiful mess. :D |
Unfortunately, I can't watch the videos... or see the picture. :( The work computer has websense on it so you know it's (not) good.
I'll make up a list of the gear in a minute or two. One of these days I want to buy a domain again and get everything I've got on it with pictures. People are usually taken aback when they see how much music junk one guy has managed to accumulate, hahah. and hey, for what it's worth you can call me Matt if you like. |
The bassist in my band plays interestingly. A lot of chords, a lot of melody, and also a lot of normal bass playing. It helps fill out the sound a lot because it's just one guitar, one bass, and drums. Vocals, too, but you know what I mean.
|
Yeah, I know exactly what you mean about it being cool to be able to step up and add a little more from the bass when you've only got guitar and drums with you. The vast majority of original bands I've been in have required that kind of extra contribution from the bass, and doing that kind of thing is probably what has given me the most fun, and shaped my playing the most over the years.

The fact that you like Fugazi tells me that you probably, at least a bit, come from a similar musical background as us, and people that do are always more receptive to our style. |
I wonder where Liam is lately.
It's been strangely positive around here. |
Probably playing Starcraft 2. It's his new WoW.
|
Haha.
Too right. I almost miss hearing how much he hates all of our music and thoughts on music and approaches to music. |
I wouldn't go that far.
|
Hey so a million years later I'm back with that gear list.
guitars: Peavey acoustic (Dad bought me this one and it's one of my most cherished instruments) Challenger classical acoustic (nothing special, my jr. high was tossing a bunch of them out back in '03 and I took three and built one with the best parts) '08 Fender acoustic (OK guitar, I bought it when my friends and I went to Coachella in '08 so I wouldn't wreck a guitar that had any sentimental value) Squier Stratacoustic (the electric/acoustic. purchased on the cheaps for open mic gigs.) '08 Fender Jazzmaster (my prize. my favorite guitar because it's just an absolute Champion to play.) '06 Fender Highway 1 Stratocaster (bought in '06 specifically to play a guitar solo that came to my head, so I wouldn't forget it. I had returned to Fort St. John for a winter's work thinking "yeah, I won't need an instrument. I'll be busy all the time." ... yeah, right. basses: '06 Fender American Jazz (60th Anniversary) my main bass. I love it to pieces. the pickguard is pulled so it looks a bit like a Jaco right now. '96 Fender Mexi. Jazz - the project bass I've talked about on here before; haven't done anything with it as I don't want to start 'til I have all the parts. of course it plays like an absolute dream and sounds as good as the USA Jazz so I feel guilty about tearing it apart... dammit. '03/04 Spector Professional - real nice bass. It was my main before I bought the Jazz, but now I never play it anymore and it just sits there looking pretty and bumming me out, haha. It's up for sale right now, actually. 'Mach 2' Jazz copy - my first bass, and the absolute ultimate power Champion. if it wasn't for that thing I wouldn't be the man I am today, at a desk in a Beatrice milk T-shirt. Oh yeah. '02 Ibanez GSR 200 - dead and gone, more or less. was my main bass forever back in highschool. Electronics died early on and it was forever being fixed, then I played it full-on for two or three years, long-term lent it to a friend of mine and his dad and the electronics died again. last I heard it was in Sudbury, ON in pieces. Too bad, but it had its run. It was a great bass, played real nice, real worn in. amps: TubeWorks 300W bass amp - never actually heard of these cats nor have I really researched, but it's a great amp. bought used for 300 bucks - another one of my great amp steals. Ampeg B115 - bought used from Shreveport, Louisiana just before Hurricane Katrina. It shipped up with my Spector, actually. it was a bit of a package. great, great amp. Simon's playing out of it at this time. Roland Jazz Chorus (50W) - my main guitar amp, and hopefully the only amp I'll ever need. bought this used for 300 as well, shortly after I bought the highway 1 strat. this amp was my greatest coup for gear so far. pedals: Jim Dunlop Crybaby wah with Fasel shifter Boss DD-3 digital delay Boss BF-3 flanger the foot-switch for the Jazz Chorus, haha. I mostly use the chorus & vibrato. Danelectro french toast octave distortion hmmm... I'm trying to think of what else... a Boss acoustic simulator, but I don't use it in the board. Currently I've also got a long-term loan in Simon's 'Chicken' pedal - a custom-build of the Soviet Big Muff. it sounds absolutely manly and is probably the best overdrive pedal I've ever played. and of course a power-all system to keep everything running full-time. I think that's it for the moment with the pedals, 'til I get that Phase Shifter. Also I'm thinking about picking up a T-Rex Alberta overdrive, partly because it sounds pretty bright and crunchy with the right settings and partly because the gang and I have a huge in-joke to do with Alberta and it would be good for so many laughs. other gear - Pearl Export drum kit with Zildjian cymbals - bought off my pal Anthony, who was in a band I played in back in the day called Club Sandwich. the cymbals are pretty junky (the ZXTs) save for the one crash I replaced, I believe it's a ZBT. still have the crash I swapped it with, it's getting pretty bagged but it's fun to thrash out on or to use as a cymbal that fades quickly. a bunch of cases, stands, whatever, they don't count. ha. Two PA's - a Toa and a Realistic... lots of speaker sets for both. The Realistic came with some bad-ace custom Traynors... I think they have Cerwin speakers in them now. That's all I can really think of at the moment. |
Damn. That is quite the collection of gear.
How's that Danelectro pedal? They're really cheap, but I've heard some decent things come out of them. |
It's really not too shabby. A friend who used to play gave it to me when he found out I was looking for a distortion pedal. I don't use it a whole hell of a lot to be honest... the music we play doesn't really call for too much distortion, and I usually just use the overdrive. But for what I use it for it works.

Arpeggiator is one of my favorite tunes - one of those can always cheer me up songs. |
Alright, will do.
What music do you listen to? List some bands, I guess? Our music has grown a lot over the last two and a half years. It started out pretty straight-forward punk, each album took it to a new level. The new stuff isn't quite as punky on the whole, but it's still a key influence. My favorite bands are stuff like The Mars Volta, Primus, Mr. Bungle, Brainiac, Dead Kennedys... I'm not really sure what comes out in our sound, though. I never know who to compare us to... we've gotten Mogwai a few times. |
Jeez, that's a good question.
Modest Mouse, Propagandhi, Matthew Good, Godspeed, Rush, Brian MacMillan, Fugazi, Bell Orchestre, the Hip, I Hate You When You're Pregnant, Holy Fuck, Fucked Up, Gob, Les Trois Accords, Les Denis Drolet, Thrice, Minibosses, Josh Ritter, Beastie Boys, Joel Plaskett, Minutemen, fIREHOSE, Mastodon, Elton John, Barenaked Ladies, Dan Auerbach, Mike Hale, Metric, Ween, Sam Roberts, Alexisonfire, Husker Du, International Noise Conspiracy, Wide Mouth Mason, Arctic Monkeys, Coldplay, The Blood Brothers, Beck, Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet, Tapes 'n Tapes, Arcade Fire, the list goes on forever... definitely feel like I have too many Canadians in there though. Really though the only things I don't really dig are 90% of top-40 radio and about the same on the rap/hip-hop spectrum. I love jazz music but it's more of a whoever's playing at the time kinda thing. Classical music is really cool, techno's good... the genres are just not the ones I focus on. I know what you mean about classifying the band... I hate trying to explain what I play to people. The easiest way to say it would be indie rock I guess, but then you get thinking of the billion-or-so influcences behind the tunes and start throwing shapes... "well, it's really Modest-Mouse influenced kinda indie rock, but there's prog and punk influences with a touch of folk à la Josh Ritter, plus a real Godspeed influence..." and then of course they're all lost. |

There's also no easy way to calculate how much of a volume drop you can expect to have by cutting it this way. Is your amp 8 ohm stable? |
My amp has one 4 and one 8 ohm tap. Also, it would sound different, as it allows you to reach more overdriven sounds before becoming too loud, as less speakers push less air and volume. It's all a question of if I had £1000 hanging around anyway.
Which I don't. |
My wireless unit also stopped working today. What the hell? It won't switch on. That's something else I can't afford to replace. Poup :(
