You can start with Explosions in the Sky as an introductory course, although many here will tell you they blow (I like them). If you like them, you'll like Mono.
If you want to go a little more experimental, you can check out 65daysofstatic and see how they meld post-rock and electronica.
Pelican, Red Sparowes, and Sigur Ros are all staples of the genre and each have their own unique touch.
We Followed Tigers, despite the glitchy rips floating around, is one of the best post-rock groups out there.
If you want to go into more folk-y territory, Halifax Pier is a good start.
Jakob's "Solace" is an excellent album. They're like if you took Explosions in the Sky and made it darker and more interesting.
Mouth of the Architect and Rosetta both offer more Isis-esque metal.
Russian Circles is less post-rock and more instrumental rock, but still good (especially if you like Pelican).

That's all I can think of to introduce you to post-rock.
Jakob is outstanding - I have a massive music boner for them. :D

Seen them twice this year so far.
Can someone recommend me a good Do Make Say Think album to start with, please?
I'd recommend their newest album over & Yet & Yet.

niobium 03-14-2007 06:36 AM
Also, I've been digging Faraquet a lot.
..Are they considered post rock?
idk..they are good either way ;p
I didn't like Faraquet so much, but Medications rocks.

TojesDolan 03-14-2007 08:23 AM

Jakob is good interesting post Rock.

Just start with Winter Hymn Country Hymn Secret Hymn

I think faraquet is more in the vein of math rock (i hate that term, but that's the only way i could describe it)

AA-12 03-14-2007 09:14 AM

Anyone have a link to A Sun That Never Sets?

Concubine 03-14-2007 09:15 AM
Anyone have a link to A Sun That Never Sets?
I don't know, but "Watchfire" is my favorite Neurosis song, even after hearing The Eye of Every Storm.

AA-12 03-14-2007 09:16 AM
the Neurosis album?
Concubine 03-14-2007 09:18 AM

AA-12 03-14-2007 09:19 AM

I'm not on the DU, but I'd love an upload :) If you have any albums you're looking for, say it and i'll see if I have any that I could upload in return.

I would reccomend you to pass on listening to them.

But yes, they are post rock. Not good post rock sadly.

whatduffhuck7 03-14-2007 07:18 PM

does anybody agree that lift your skinny fists is the best GY!BE album? or am i just crazy? and please dont say F#a#. U.X.O. will be exceptable choice. i have slow riot but never gave it the time to listen to it. it takes time to really get to know a godspeed album

Raider 03-14-2007 09:03 PM

I really need to check out GSY!BE, Sigur Ros, and Explosions in the Sky. I love Pelican, but that's as far as my post-rock education goes at this point.

samthebassman 03-15-2007 12:24 AM

You have many enjoyable hours of listening coming up with those bands.

samthebassman 03-15-2007 12:26 AM

Anybody here get into a band called "Saxon Shore"? I think Im the only person on earth who has heard of them.

Dr. Jake Destructo 03-15-2007 12:38 AM

Nah, there was an album of theirs on the Daily Upload a couple months ago actually.

Amit 03-15-2007 12:41 AM
Nah, there was an album of theirs on the Daily Upload a couple months ago actually.
Thats good, not enough people know about them they should be a more "known" band.

Amit 03-15-2007 12:49 AM
Still newb.
AA-12 03-15-2007 01:12 PM

I'm downloading that because 99% of what i've heard from your music taste is great :)

EDIT: I'm not near done with it, but like always, this is amazing. Being that I find most "post-rock" anymore to kind of suck, this is some of the best.

Amit 03-15-2007 01:19 PM

the song is like being in the womb or travelling through hyperspace or some shi

AA-12 03-15-2007 01:27 PM

Hyperspace for sure. It's trance inducing.

TojesDolan 03-15-2007 02:32 PM

holy crap thanks Amit ++

Only downside: waiting for a couple minutes

._.
"the Exquisite Death of Saxon Shore" is one of the best post-rock albums I've heard.
**** yeah, that album rocks the *** out of most others in the genre.

no propellers 03-15-2007 08:40 PM

i have Saxon Shore's be a bright blue, but i don't find all too great, but i'm working on downloading the exquisite death of... right now.

samthebassman 03-15-2007 08:42 PM

You will not be disappointed, I promise you.

Spiritofmosa 03-15-2007 11:16 PM
**** yeah, that album rocks the *** out of most others in the genre.
i heard it first!

Sleepy 03-15-2007 11:18 PM

The Exquisite Death of Saxon Shore is a killer album.

pixiesfanyo 03-16-2007 12:29 AM

A Crimson Grail is decent.

But once you get over the novelty of it being 400 guitars, you're just like oh.

Amit 03-16-2007 01:25 AM

yeah agreed

but it's something that should be heard anyway

niobium 03-16-2007 06:45 AM

i liked it, i might test out parts 2 and 3 later
