The only problem I have with APTB are the lyrics. Now I know one doesn't listen to Rush for the lyrics, but for some reason they irritate me. Still a good song, though.
You can't judge all of their lyrics by A Passage To Bankok! Read the lyrics for Spirit of the Radio, Freewill, Tom Sawyer, Xanadu, Closer to the Heart, 2112. Cmon, man.

Jacaran 11-17-2005 07:05 PM
Extremely cheesy, but I still like them.

I know, I was just talking about that particular song.

Dread_rocker 11-19-2005 07:41 AM

Can't wait for the new R30 DVD and album!!!

Maggot Dream 11-19-2005 02:30 PM

I think Rush's lyrics have their ups and downs. Some songs, like 2112, have great lyrics, while others like The Trees are just overdone. I appreciate that Peart was making an allegory in that song, but it's too much of a cartoon.

Hehe, yeah. The Trees is a little iffy.

Xanadu 11-19-2005 08:28 PM

ive been listining to Afterimage alot more now because of my grandfathers current death. it helps me remember him and plus its a great song but more now then ever

thunderzstruck 11-20-2005 08:51 AM
Hehe, yeah. The Trees is a little iffy.
haha My friends actually started laughing when they heard The Trees lyrics. But also they didn't get any of the metaphors at all *rollzeyes*

rockinbass17 11-20-2005 10:27 AM

I actually think The Trees is very clever. Instead of making this whole intellectual and philosophical statement, they made it very cartoonish, ridiculous, and easy to understand. Comical satire.

shamed-angel 11-20-2005 11:31 AM
I love Rush lyrics.

They're my favorite part.
Does anyone remember the guy bitching about Rush's lyrics and he posted the lyrics to the Trees? Those are some of the best lyrics I've ever read.
Seriously.

Maggot Dream 11-20-2005 01:18 PM
Yeah, I can't see them quitting anytime soon either. They've still got some good stuff left in them.
It's actually highly likely now, unless my friend was lying.

7/26/06, Red Rocks, CO. :D

YDload 11-20-2005 04:02 PM

I think Neil Peart writes the lyrics thinking they're going to sound cool, but he forgets that Geddy's voice automatically makes every word 58% funnier by default. This is why it's hard to take The Trees seriously.

Yeah, his voice does sound odd at times. Rush in Rio in particular.

Washburn 11-21-2005 11:25 PM
Time Stand Still was off of 2112.

I love Rush, theyt're my fav band. Just watched Rush in Rio like 2 hours ago haha. There's rumours that my city is tryin to get them to play a concert here, and I hope we do.

Alex Lifeson is on of my fav guitarist's. He is so original. Neil Peart is the best drummer and Geddy has a nice voice and he's a really good bassist.
Wrong... Time stand still is on the "Hold your fire" album.

Me and my buddy together have each and every Rush album, he has most of them, but i got a few. Everyone here has basically covered Rush's excellentcy (I apologize if that is spelt wrong) so I'm not even going to bother.

Washburn 11-21-2005 11:38 PM
i like the solo in A Passage to Bangkok
I played that for a talent show with my buddies 3 years ago, i rocked that solo... felt great.
I played that for a talent show with my buddies 3 years ago, i rocked that solo... felt great.
Cool.

In gym class, we usually listen to Rush all the time cause some guys always bring in their CDs.

Romanticide 11-22-2005 02:30 AM

yeah, ive got 2112, and thats enough to say i love rush.

id have to say my fave song by them would be YYZ.

ps. Geddy Lee is freakin awesome

FatalEnergy 11-22-2005 02:32 AM

NP: Jacob's Ladder

This song is mind blowing. Do they ever play it live?

Double Bass Jim 11-22-2005 02:54 AM

Great song ^^^

Scooch 11-26-2005 12:49 PM

So the new Rush 30 Anniversary DVD came out, what did you think of it?

Shoot2thrill 11-26-2005 01:36 PM

Mike Portnoy basically stole Neil Peart's style. So in that sense you cannot say that Peart and Portnoy wish they were Bruford. Obviously Portnoy is an overrated Neil Peart knockoff. Never has one single drummer influenced so many other drummers than Neil Peart except maybe Buddy Rich. You also cannot say that Rush is self endulgant if you ever watch an interview of them they are some of the most modest people about their abilities. They know they're good and they know everyone else knows they're good so why brag? If you've never seen a Rush live show you should be dragged out and shot. They don't move around as much as many bands but they play every song perfectly and the light shows are amazing.

I completely agree with you on that but just wanna say I think drummers like John Bonham and Ringo Starr have influenced many many of today's drummers aswell.

pohl_56 11-26-2005 09:35 PM

But about R30... I was gonna buy it today but realized I forgot all my money. :( Maybe for Xmas. What did those who bought it think?

Hammer_of_the_Gods 11-26-2005 09:58 PM

I saw R30 at work yesterday and was thinking about buying it. I didn't even know it was comming out. My bet is that it's a great DVD as I was at the Seattle show for the tour and it was fantastic.

pohl_56 11-26-2005 11:20 PM

*Really wants to see Rush in concert ever since Rush in Rio came out.*

I am so going to that. In fact, I don't think I'll stop saying that until the day of the show.

Dread_rocker 12-04-2005 11:52 AM

Wooo The DVD is amazing!! I got the deluxe edition the other day!

Xanadu 12-04-2005 04:17 PM

i definatly gotta get it for christmas

Artemician 12-04-2005 05:18 PM

Can anybody post the setlist for it?

I'm too much of a lazy bastard to actually look it up. Pretty please?

hendrixonpunk 12-05-2005 09:12 PM
I completely agree with you on that but just wanna say I think drummers like John Bonham and Ringo Starr have influenced many many of today's drummers aswell.
Ringo Starr was useless. Anyone could do what he did. In most of the songs he doesn't even actually hit a drum. Beatles are great notheless, obviously you don't listen to them for their drumming.

By the way i just got The Spirit of Radio from Wal Mart the other day. Flipped it on and i was playing Working Man in 5 minutes.

xxGumbyxx 12-05-2005 10:43 PM

This is something I've been curious about, can anyone tell me what album Spirit of Radio was originally on?

BludgeonySteve 12-13-2005 09:12 PM

I got Roll The Bones a while ago. The rapping is cool but kind of creepy.

BludgeonySteve 12-18-2005 09:02 PM

Ok, now I got Roll The Bones a really long time ago. Still good, though.

BurningSky 12-18-2005 09:36 PM

Hemispheres is probably their best album as a whole, while 2112 is definitely their best song. Moving Pictures is probably the best album to start with, though...
I got Roll The Bones a while ago. The rapping is cool but kind of creepy.
I don't particularly like the rapping, but I think it shows how creative Rush is as a band. They're constantly moving forward, their sound has progressed so much from album to album.

2112 and Hemispheres are my favorites. A Farewell to Kings is amazing too, if only for Xanadu. Moving Pictures is the obvious Rush standard, great album if you're just starting with them.
