I agree with you. Although WT and TF aren't technically considered "concept albums", I think everything puts out has a some sort of theme or constant message throughout. TDS was the only one with a really specific, defined story though.

repcak 10-12-2005 05:08 PM

yeah, In TDS he at first had a concept in mind and then he started to write the songs. In WT and TF he wrote songs all the time during a special period of time/life and then put it in order

Killtacular 10-12-2005 05:37 PM

The Fragile was a concept album, but it had no storyline.

That's kind of contradictory.

No it's not.

Leper Affinity 10-12-2005 06:53 PM

Yes it is.

someone told me that nin was one person... is this true?

Yes(but not live)
Trent Reznor would be that ONE.

A concept album is an album with a storyline. I don't see how it could be considered a concept album if it has no storyline.

heavy metal kid 10-12-2005 07:00 PM
No it's not.
To be a concept album, it must have a storyline or at least a main theme on all songs.

The order isn't necesary.

This is why the Fragile is a concept album, not because it has a storyline. Just like Dark Side of the Moon and Ride the Lightning.

Leper Affinity 10-12-2005 07:03 PM

What theme does The Fragile have?

Killtacular 10-12-2005 07:05 PM
What theme does The Fragile have?

There's a general theme to the album of systems failing and things sort of falling apart.
Fair enough. :) I always thought every song had some kind of emotional consistency, but it never had anything specific enough to be considered a concept album.

Killtacular 10-12-2005 07:31 PM

Wikipedia is a wonderful website. I could get lost for hours.

A concept album that tells a story is a rock opera, I believe.

And yes, Wikipedia is "teh ****."

A concept album that has no storyline is an oxymoron. A concept album is an album that tells a story.

So who thinks a NIN/Porcupine Tree tour would be worth losing your virginity to a 35 year old biker named Chuck just to see the concert? :-D I would.

BlindWriting 10-12-2005 10:39 PM

While The Fragile is not a concept album in the more convential storyline approach, like TDS, it does have some linking themes. Musically, there are some repeated sounds, such as the music in The Frail being repeated a couple times throughout. There are other, much more subtle examples of this. Also, lyrically, there are some definite themes.

With Teeth DID start out as a concept album (Bleedthrough), and there are some repeated lyrical themes (lines blurring, one being right where he belongs), but otherwise, it does not hold much of an actual concept.

No it's not!!!

A concept album can tell a story, but it doesn't have to. It can just have a general theme that all the songs adhere to. For example: Ride the Lightning is a concept album, because all songs are ways of dying, which is the theme.

I've never heard any Procupined Tree, so I couldn't tell you.

Dried Muffin Remnants 10-13-2005 02:28 PM

Porcupine Tree is one of those bands that I want to get into (because they're obviously talented musically) but cannot because they have that little cheesiness factor that I cannot stand.

Tryxx 10-13-2005 03:01 PM

Not sure if this has ever been posted, but an in depth article and analysis of The Downward Spiral.
