I just ordered the Number of The Beast & Master of Puppets albums. I'm super stoked to get em....does anybody have them that can tell me what to expect?
Well, I dunno about the maiden one, but Master of Puppets :o If you liked the original, everything about DT's version is amazing, especially their version of Orion, and in some songs I think Labrie does amazing vocals (But that works both ways, I don't like his voice in some songs). Petrucci adds his own guitar work, I've only heard a Live cover (Dunno if they released a studio version?) and it was kinda bad quality, you can hear the guitar work, vocals and drums, fairly well, but the bass is drowned out, so I can't give a comment. |
ToT was November 2003 I think, 'cause I wanted to vote for it in a best of 2004, but it was actually 2003.

Dayum my bad. So I'm sure by now we're all die hard fans....how did everyone find about DT? I used to look up tabs on MX, and one day I stumbled across the forums. It was a "best guitarist" discussion, and the name John Petrucci kept coming up. Well damned if I had ever heard of him...so I did a little research and found his band Dream Theater. After reading reviews on several of their albums, I decided Images and Words was the place to start. From the second I threw it on, I was hooked. Each musician is now my favorite in his particular field (save for LaBrie, who every now and then just gets in the way IMO.) Since then, I have bought all of their albums minus FII and Awake, the Budokan DVD, and I have taken quite a liking to both LTE albums as well. So what are your stories? |
He says these words -
'This is John Myung.' 'I think it was a hundred. That was it.' 'It wasn't working out.' 'You don't know? It's the Infinity symbol.' 'Ace Of Spades.' And that's pretty much it. Maybe one or two more sentences but those are the ones I remember. And I've watched the DVD with the commentary at least 50 times.
I could have sworn that was Myung giving the commentaries on the Metropolis Pt. II storyline, but maybe that was my ears deceiving me and it was really Portnoy or Petrucci. |
1) Train of Thought was released 11-3-03, I believe.
2) I had seen CD reviews, but never really paid them any mind. I really decided to get into Dream Theater after hearing "As I Am" on the radio. Yes, the radio. |
Joz I see you backin up ToT a lot. It seems like every third person just bashes it end to end, and I just wanna say I'm with you on that one. Its no less DT than any of their other albums, just because it has a little more edge to it. I've been watching you fight this one man battle, standing up for that album, and I second your motion.
:chug: |
I like ToT, the only song on it I don't like is Vacant, which imo is a strange filler track that does nothing other than introduce one of the main riffs for Stream of Conscisousness.
On another note, the drum solo in "Finally Free" is 'kin amazing. |
Train of Thought is amazing!
I love it, I wish their next album was similar too, I did get let down by Train of Thought because I wanted more :( |
So, is Petrucci doing vocals? :o
Because that would be kinda cool I reckon. (*Has no idea what Petrucci sounds like).
this is what petrucci sounds like. recorded from the budokan documentary, the audio and video isn't synced for some reason but you can hear him at least. you can also hear him clearly on ACOS and other songs on the live scenes from NY dvd, although at times i'd rather you couldn't. http://s35.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1M2POMF55Y0Q63A4ZOYCM2JR26 as for ToT, it's one of my favourite albums and it's just the band playing as fast and as loud as they can. no one ever complained that chopin or paginini or whoever else back then played too fast, musicians have always tried to push instruments to their limits in terms of speed, but when a guitarist does it suddenly everyone is appalled and disgusted. it does have some good solos and riffs, although they are pretty basic compared to stuff off I&W and the other earlier albums. i hope the new one has some good old ACOS style complex riffing. vacant i also like, and i've always thought of it exactly as an introduction to stream of conciousness, sort of like a vocal section leading into the main song. and if it was a filler, i doubt they'd go to the trouble of bringing in a chello player to play it, they'd just get jordan to play it or do a comedy piano backing. |
ToT is by far the best DT album
|
Thanks for speakin up everyone. ToT is one of my favorite DT albums as well. I just dont like to see such a good album bashed so ignorantly. Youre not alone JoZ :thumb:

:chug:
I appreciate that. :chug: I mean, some people probably think I hate SFAM or I&W, since I am constantly putting those albums down. It's not that I hate them, it's just I like other albums better. I like a good softer song or ballad as much as anyone, but I also like to mosh about and headbang, and Train of Thought is excellent for this. I don't see how anyone could thing ToT is anything less than brilliant. It might not be a concept album like SFAM, but so what? The songwriting is masterful as always, and the playing is spectacular. I do concede that Petrucci seems more than content to just shred away on this album, but a guitar or keyboard solo makes up only a small part of an album, even a Dream Theater album. It's about the feel of the song, the hooks and riffs that make up a song...and I think ToT has some of their best riffage to date. ...but nothing will top the riffs in The Glass Prison ;) |
I need to transcribe "In the Name of God" to a 4-string bass and learn it, that song is 'kin amazing. The best song on the album imo, Endless Sacrifice would be second.
|
i like scenes much better than ToT
but i only have them two i want more |

I am working on a Guitar Pro file of said song. I play it on my four string, tuned C-F-Bb-Eb, it's really pretty easy...well, most of it anyway :thumb: |

IMO, "In the Name of God" on the Budokan DVD is by far the most emotional performance I've seen (other than Maiden's "Blood Brothers" at Rio), even though the song is kinda like that on the album.
JoZ: Do you think .110-.95-.75-.50 would be good for a tuning like that? :x |

You have a following now
I dont know about you, but I read somewhere that Octavarium is supposed to be heavier than ToT. If thats the case, I'm friggin stoked to hear it. I love all DT, but nothing tops their heavy stuff. |
Never a band to do things by halves, Dream Theater here delivers a two-disc extravaganza with a title track that clocks in at a prog-tastic 42 minutes.
Is this true? :o That's insane! Anyway, I've heard many people rave about The Glass Prison, so I'm thinking of getting this album, I checked Amazon, which is where I got this quote. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00005UEAR/ref=pd_sim_music_3/103-1739267-7659004?v=glance&s=music My only problem would be, I don't think I could listen to a 14 minute song. So is this album worth it? It seems a pretty long album. |
The second disc of Six Degrees is split into 8 songs, even though it's based around one concept. The songs, afaik, are NOT directly related to each other though.
The Glass Prison is godly. |
Its worth it for The Glass Prison, Blind Faith, and Misunderstood alone.
|

I just listened to the Budokan version of ItNoG and then the ToT version. Budokan > ToT. The improv solo at the end after the "Unyielding crusade/Divine revelation/Does following faith/Lead us to violence?" is amazing. I love the tapping part
|
I like Octavarium best.
|
I like Octavarium best.
You don't have it. |
You don't have it.
People labeled JLB's solo stuff as Octavarium? |
Yes.

Dream Theater aren't a metal band; they're prog-metal (The emphasis is in the prog). |
i just want more dream theater

Ah Six Degrees. One of the my fav albums of all time (especially CD2). It's got everything.
|
I agree on 6doit being one of their better works. Its definitely one of the most diverse.
My favorite DT cd is always changing though. It mostly depends on which album I have in the player at the time. Right now I cant put down SFaM. Also NEWS FLASH! I got both Number of the Beast and Master of Puppets (the DT versions) on the way...they should be here by the end of the week. /superstoked :thumb: |
I know this is probably asked way too much, but whens the new album coming out?
And does anyone know if its going to be like the previous records? Because I really liked ToT. |
June 7th :)
I can't help you out with how it will sound, but I hope it will be heavier and longer then Train of Thought. |
I'm not hoping for any specific sound. Just something I'll enjoy. :thumb:
|
I cant wait
