Well, although DSOTM or OBC are my favourite albums, my favourite song, right now at least, is easily Wish You Were Here. :thumb:

FloHaake 12-15-2004 09:12 AM

"Animals" will always be my favorite Floyd album.

gmoneyguy 12-15-2004 10:07 AM

I love animals as well.

FloHaake 12-15-2004 10:10 AM

Theres something about that album that cannot be touched by any other. Its just so good.

JonM 12-15-2004 10:12 AM

I can touch it. Meddle. I guess I'll just link to this thread.

I horribly scratched up my WYWH album and I couldn't live without. I went and got a new one. Its the only cd I've ever bought two of. That's how much it rules.

All Pink Floyd discussion should go here. Don't mean to be a twit, but just trying to keep the mods happy.

According to the Pink Floyd biography I read, the theme behind Wish You Were Here is sort of, like, being isolated and alone in the world. For example, the people shaking hands. It's a really empty gesture, when you think about it. It's just formality. And while going through this formality, the man is burning inside, but he just hides it. Also, after Welcome To The Machine (I think) there's the door closing, and the sound of the party, which was also meant to give a sense of isolation, and really superficial connection with people. Contrary to popular belief, Wish You Were Here was not written directly as a tribute to Syd Barrett, although it applies to him remarkably well. It just applies to the general sense of being lost, adrift in the world. Shine On... is a direct tribute to Barrett, however.

guitarded_chuck 12-15-2004 02:29 PM

Meddle and Animals are my favorites.

Like DeusEx said, WYWH wasn't completely based on Syd. Shine On is Water's tribute to Syd, saying how similar they really are, and how much he misses him. I don't know if the song WYWH was directed at Syd, but it could be. I think it could be said that Syd was a major influence to the theme of WYWH, not that the album is totally directed at him.

magicbus 12-15-2004 03:04 PM

Very interesting points guys. DeusEx, what biography did you read?

I never knew that. Gimme more factoids.

Broken Arrow 12-15-2004 03:23 PM

The new book looks really good.

I think its called Inside Out by Nick Mason.

It has all of these awesome pistures and looks interesting but also looks expensive.

Distant Echoes 12-15-2004 04:09 PM

Im planning on getting that soon.

I actually read about the Wish you were here meaning a week ago in an interview...that only shine on was made for syd...but you read DeusExmachinas thing, its just like what i saw.

The other day i looked in the Guitar center at a tablature book for the enitre Wish you were here album (yes, im considering covering that whole album too...like DSOTM), and there were 9 photoshoots in it. The first was them setting the man on fire, and a few of the drew members still in the picture, then they got about 3 good pictures of the handshake, then you see the man run away, looking for water when you see smoke fill the last few shots. It was pretty funny, but they actually did set this man on fire in 1975. It was one of the first times they ever did it to a stuntman...around when Smoky and the Bandit also performed it in the movie.

Sad But True 12-15-2004 07:19 PM

this has probably already been said, but hey ho.....

SCISSOR SISTERS, THE BAND'S DEBUT SELF-TITLED ALBUM, WAS UNLEASHED ON 2 FEBRUARY 2004 ON POLYDOR RECORDS. THIS IS THE ALBUM ON EVERYONE'S LIPS......
THE TRACKLISTING GOES AS FOLLOWS:

1. LAURA
2. TAKE YOUR MAMA
3. COMFORTABLY NUMB <----------oh dear god no.

Deano_Geetar 12-15-2004 07:32 PM

Floyd are one of my favourite bands and Glimour is my god! The solo for comfortably numb is amazing and time aswell. When me and my friends are drunk we love to listen to dark side of the moon(the album) and i love to listen to run like hell when im drunk and hyped up on red bull.

DeusExMachina 12-15-2004 07:50 PM

Distant Echoes, I have that tablature book. At least, I think its the same one. Does it have the interview with Roger Waters? It's pretty good.

The biography I read is "Saucerful of Secrets: The Pink Floyd Odyssey" by Nicholas Schaffner. It was really good, but it was released during the AMLOR world tour, so it's missing some stuff. However, the guy was definitely very thorough. He was on the tour with the band, so he got to work with them and get a lot of info. I definitely want to get the Nick Mason book too, though.

PinkFloyd 12-15-2004 07:53 PM

I think the creepiest on The Wall is empty spaces by far. Then followed by Is There Anybody Out There?

Distant Echoes 12-15-2004 07:55 PM

Well I didnt really check out the book that much, considering I know a totally accurate site for that and i left as soon as i came to the store since i found that my Wawa pedal only needed a new battery and wasnt broken...that was pretty embarresing.

How much did that book you read cost? Ill probably get it before christmas while i got to go shopping for the people i actually like.

DeusExMachina 12-15-2004 07:57 PM

My book? It wasn't too bad... 8 or 10 dollars, I think. Don't remember for sure. I really liked it though.

Distant Echoes 12-15-2004 08:06 PM

I pulled it up on amazon...its about 12 bucks for a hard cover 300+ page book. Thats not to bad. One more question...Any pictures? Reading isnt really my thing...

magicbus 12-15-2004 09:55 PM

I have the WYWH tab book too. I know every song except for the slide solo in the second half of SOYCD. The first half is so fun to play, I love Gilmour's tone on that song. I think I'm gonna get those books for christmas too, cause my list is looking pretty bare.

I really like Empty Spaces too, definently creepy. I just wish the movie version was on the cd. It has extended lyrics, and the coolest animation in the movie, I think.

Dr. Jake Destructo 12-15-2004 10:55 PM

Well, here is my 1,000th post, and I thought I would post it in my favorite bands official thread.

Since we're on the topic of playing Pink Floyd songs, the only song I've really sat down and tried to learn is Wish You Were Here. Awesome song

Could you reccomend some more Floyd songs that are more lead guitar, but not very difficult, please?

Yay, 1,000 :D

Dogs has some awesome lead work. :thumb:

DeusExMachina 12-16-2004 03:34 PM

A lot of the songs have amazing lead work. They're also not too technically difficult, although if you want to get the Gilmour tone out of them, and play them as well as he does, that'll take some work. Try going with something like Time or Comfortably Numb, or maybe Money. I just figured out the chords to Breathe yesterday, I'm stoked. I love that song.

BlackDeathMetalJazz or really ANYTHING else please- 12-16-2004 03:41 PM

Does anyone like early Syd Floyd (rare) era? Ex. Apples and Oranges

Those chords define that album alone, I've learned that song too.

Who agrees Marooned is a beautiful instrumental :)

DeusExMachina 12-16-2004 05:50 PM

I agree that Marooned is a beautiful instrumental. I love that whole album.

Breathe is a really amazing song, but hardly anyone mentions it when they name good Pink Floyd songs.
