I have to say, it's very off putting when you have a guitar teacher who's poor at teaching guitar. My old teacher was very critical of everything I did and made me learn basic barre chords and pieces he wrote. I didn't have a problem with this. I did however have a problem with the fact that he was hardly in my lessons (most of it was spent outside talking to other people or wandering), and when he was he would either be taking the piss out of me or there would be one of his favourites in there (you know, show offs). All this made me incredibly nervous in front of him and I found it difficult to concentrate and play my best.

My new teacher is much better.

reminds me of my teacher a few years back (never took lessons since then). These people should be crucified, they're such a bad influence (little stoicy was so discouraged back then :()

kurrpt 01-17-2006 03:02 PM

my 4th and FINAL lesson consisted of me playing SILENT NIGHT to sheet music for THE ENTIRE LESSON!!!

for someone who works on petrucci, shred, sweeping, tapping, etc, its VERY insulting to do that to begin. Not to mention the countless times he brought up his "8 year old students" who have "no problems" with sight reading sheet music.

Thats how I was with my teacher, then I got used to him...the being nervous around him because I didnt know him all that well.

kurrpt 01-17-2006 03:05 PM

i wasnt nervous at all. the sad thing i was always looking forward to learning, only to be let down by the "O, what were we doign last week" kind of thing. If im paying your fukking arse 30 bucks an hour, you could at least humor me by pretending you know what hte fuk your talking about

I mean he was a good slide player, but really, didnt impress me at all

damn these "teachers", that was awful man! Did you reach the sweep level on your own by the way?

oh please it's probably true that his 8 year old students can sight read better than you

as you can now tell, playing shred is near worthless to anyone who is serious about music

Stoic 01-17-2006 03:13 PM
as you can now tell, playing shred is near worthless to anyone who is serious about music
It might be true, but it doesn't mean it's any more necessary. There are probably 8/9 year olds in my old school band that can read music better than I can. Obviously I'm getting better since I did it for 6 years and then stopped and am now doing it again, but it's still the theory I'm struggling with.
What do you mean?
I agree with Eggo. I think it takes little musical talent to be able to seriously shred. I think it takes more talent to come up with a good slow solo that's all over the fretboard in different but perfect keys and modes and such.

ive literally done EVERYTHING on my own, kinda sucks, but if you want something done ''right" ...
What do you mean?
the stereotypical shredder who can only regurgitate the same scalar lines and arpeggio voicings will get laughed out of a respectable music school

no one wants a dragster...they just go very fast in a straight line and that's it :-D

Moses 01-17-2006 03:17 PM
as you can now tell, playing shred is near worthless to anyone who is serious about music
That's not true in the least. To be a diverse artist you should be able to play anything. Playing shred doesn't mean you can't play anything else.

Amit 01-17-2006 03:18 PM
That's not true in the least. To be a diverse artist you should be able to play anything.
you're making the common mistake of correlating shred with technique

you might need to look at your stereotypes through a microscope again..

i couldnt care less wtf every other "shredder" does, nor have i stated i like to limit my "style" to a few scales.

Id rebut more, but i wouldnt get satisfaction either way

You're right too, but a shredder is somewhat worthless. Sure it's :amaze: when you see someone's fingers move that fast along the fretboard but it just looks cool.

For example

Layla Unplugged solo > any Yngwie Malmsteen solo. sure Yngwie is a good guitarist, but I don't find him any better.

Amit 01-17-2006 03:24 PM
i couldnt care less wtf every other "shredder" does, nor have i stated i like to limit my "style" to a few scales.
shredders can play a million different kinds of scales but the whole definition of shred means you'll have to compromise any sense of sophistication in your phrasing
Id rebut more, but i wouldnt get satisfaction either way
the point i'm making is that all the shred, petrucci, tap, and sweep practicing in the world and your teacher says 8 year olds sight read better than you

see what i'm saying

we're not really talking about that here tho...

Ugh, of course I know that. What I'm trying to say is there's a difference between someone who's a shred guitarist and someone who can play shred.

For example: Any Nevermore solo > Layla Unplugged solo

when did i say i was lying? Apparenlty you dont get the meaning behind the posts, and only nit pick........why? I havent really cared enough to assume anything

Amit 01-17-2006 03:26 PM

and i don't really know why anyone would want to be able to shred

there's a difference between using constructing expressive sentences (slow or fast, mind you) and just going through the alphabet very fast

Shredding sounds cool everyonce in a while. That's why I like listening to solos that have shred in it as long as they don't base it around it.
