I'm talking to a friend on the phone that I haven't spoke to in like three years.

Arucard 06-13-2005 09:42 AM

I bet your having fun. Care to elaborate?
I bet your having fun. Care to elaborate?
fonesecks :naughty:

Actually, we basically had a discussion on hanging out this summer when he comes to visit, we then talked about how ridiculous Black Metal kids are, then his dad yelled at him for wasting his money on long distance phone calls.
/reads all posts I missed.

One thing I have to say:

Alex ist da sexy man!

Seriously dude, you look awesome.
Steerpike's name is Alex? Where do you find all this stuff?! Jeez!

Anyway, good morning. :)

ArcLite 06-13-2005 10:21 AM

Hey, Lucas. I'm too lazy to read through the thread and find out, but did you do a song for the prog comp?
Hey, Lucas. I'm too lazy to read through the thread and find out, but did you do a song for the prog comp?
No, unfortunately. My technical proficiency isn't high enough in the first place, and second a lot of my creative energy was spent on the Melodeath comp. But I've got a prog-tinged 20-minute song waiting in the wings for the power metal contest, whenever that comes around, so I'm all right about it. My last song had an Opeth tinge to it anyway, and I didn't want to write another one in that vein for prog metal.

ArcLite 06-13-2005 10:31 AM

Heh, well if your technicallity isn't good enough, I shouldn't have even bothered making a song. I'm trying to get it done by tonight. It's kind of cool sounding but isn't progressive or technical enough to win. I'll still enter it though. I await with great anticipation to hear your 20 minute opus.

i am the robots 06-13-2005 10:35 AM

What I kind of mean by that is skill at incorporating odd-time riffs. I can make a few that sound good, but by no means am I skilled enough at it to make a truly badass groove out of an odd-time thing. Like DT's The Glass Prison: the breakdown riff is a 12/8 guitar riff while the drums blast a beat in 3/4, and it's pure sickness. But I just can't think of cool stuff like that yet.

The 20 minute opus is pure power metal, but more serious power metal, like Nightwish, and there's a lot of prog in it as well. It's based on Lord of the Rings (I wrote a prog-metal soundtrack to the books for my senior project), and technically it's the "Fellowship of the Ring Overture." I'm doing MIDI orchestration and synth parts, which isn't a big deal since synths are MIDI anyway. I would really like to get ahold of a good sampling program though so that I can load it up with .wav files of Drumkit from Hell and have it play my drum MIDIs and have it sound good. But if I can't, we'll just have to deal with slightly fake-sounding drums again. :-/ meh. I'm excited anyway. :)

Shred Danson 06-13-2005 10:47 AM

Don't mind me, just checkin' up on the forums and uploading some tunes for the trip...

Dancin' Man 06-13-2005 10:51 AM

My entry isn't as technical as my first try but I like it much better. I do miss the Borg speech though.

I really want to win because I have a great idea for a song and I did some of the drum. Tribal metal. I don't know how it would work since it isn't a genre but it is my best work with drum programming yet. I'm starting to find the balance between impressive and fitting. I keep writing these insane drum parts that just don't fit.

ArcLite 06-13-2005 11:11 AM

Mine won't win, may noy even get a vote. However I put nearly every hour I had this weekend into it so it will be entered. Peter, what was the Borg speech? A Star Trek sample?

Lord Abortion 06-13-2005 11:13 AM

back from download- see review... it was pretty awesome

Heh, they are so awesome.

In other news, my obsession with Borknagar/Vortex/Vintersorg has led me to write a ten minute 'Melodic' Black Metal epic. I cant wait to get this recorded, its awesome.

Steerpike 06-13-2005 11:23 AM

Cain, I just missed you last night. Did you get a chance to check out the Savatage thread?

And while I'm thinking of it you and anyone else who reads my weekly threads, I could use your votes. The Celtic Frost thread now features the four candidates for next week and I'd like to see which of the four bands you guys would like to see featured next.

Arucard 06-13-2005 11:32 AM

Ill go now, i love your threads. You put alot of effort into them, each on is practically a FA.

I am so doing Borknagar as a FA, when i get more albums/learn more.

Question for all the metal heads:

I'm looking for some metal that has heavy riffs, but not something in the style of Immortal or Emperor. More like Pantera heavy. I want a band that the vocals are aggresive, but not constant growling. I like some screaming, but I want some singing, as well. Any ideas?

Iced Earth, all the way. Matt Barlow era in particular.

ATM 06-13-2005 12:19 PM

Any particular albums to look for?

Steerpike 06-13-2005 12:20 PM

Something Wicked This Way Comes and Horror Show are my favorites.

ATM 06-13-2005 12:21 PM

Cool, thanks man :)

On a completely unrelated note, do any of you play along with the music you are listening too all of the time?

I always have my acoustic with me when I am on the computer, and I just caught myself soloing over some Tupac.

Steerpike 06-13-2005 12:26 PM

I find myself singing more often than not because there isn't much room to play guitar in my little corner.

I'm actually getting pretty good. I decided to take some vocal lessons at school to supplement my guitar.

magicbus 06-13-2005 12:26 PM

Sorry, Steerpike, you just keep catching me right when I leave. :) I need to give it a more detailed view later, as I've got work in a few minutes. But I'm sure I'll find it quite interesting, especially if there are music downloads available.

Steerpike 06-13-2005 12:39 PM

Unfortunately, the dowloands I posted have expired. Bump the trhead and I'll put up some new ones.
