I guess you could call it emotional, but I'd much rather listen to Akerfeldt be emotional while singing in tune. The whole part sounds a tad contrived to me anyway, not that emotional.
|
I like it anyhow
There's this part of me that likes cacophony a lot. |
It's the acoustics in the intro that do it for me.
|
It also has a lot to do with what mood you're in.
123, every album really has it's own mood. Damnation makes me 'lax. |
I wonder how all of you non scandinavians that writes "Akerfeldt" pronounce his name, beucause it is spelled "Åkerfeldt" :P
|
I pronounce it how it's pronounced, " mick-el awk-er-felt" (at least that's how I've heard it pronounced)
|
I've always thought it was pronounced Mi-kel Oak-er-felt. That's just what I've heard though.
|
Lol, i thought it was Mick-Al Ak-er-felt.
|

The singing at the beginning doen't do much for me either, but the acoustic guitar afterwards is orgasmic. I also kind of like the way it goes straight from soft to heavy, it's something different. |
WTF!?
i haven't had the 'net for a while.. and i just found out that opeth are coming to australia.. and perth !!!! YYEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!! /insert heart palpitations here fvuck me fvucking sideways, captain!!!! i am the happiest sentient being on the earth! *dances around like gollum when he finds those rabbits in the movie* this is the best news i have ever received ! can i get an amen?! *foams at the mouth* three cheers to some of the best musicians ever. hip hip..... |
Yeah I donno, sometimes I like it, sometimes I don't. Overall the song is pretty average to me. I think it's pretty overrated in the Opeth community. And we have this kind of joke where I bug everyone about it...
If by joke you mean you looking stupid, then I agree :p. |

Just curious, does anybody know what the Ghost Reveries bonus tracks are called?
|
The funeral portrait dosn't have enough contrast in it for me in the song structure, too heavy, or whatever you want to say for it, I find it hard to enjoy; though some of the riffs are fairly cool.
Dirge For Novermber starts out good, then lacks towards the end. I don't mind the off key singing, he hits the odd off key note all the time. Often the chords he's singing over are really dissonant anyway, it's part of the appeal. It's that lead riff over those acoustics thats the best part of the song. It gave me the chills the first time I heard it, and I'm not even sure why. Then it goes heavy, okay, it stays heavy for too long... then goes really mellow for a couple of minutes.. for nothing. No clean singing, no.. I don't know, climax? It dosn't seem to go anywhere. Godheads Lament is a good song, like all that album, so shush. Searching my way to perplexion, aah, aah, ahhh!
Just curious, does anybody know what the Ghost Reveries bonus tracks are called?
I've read that they recorded When and The Grand Conjuration in the BBC studios live, and they're going on it. I missed the performace, unfortunately. Also, they're doing a cover of Solder of Fortune (Deep Purple). They cover it pretty well live from what I've heard on mp3. |
Dirge For November is my first or second best on the cd. I don't understand all the Dirge hate. I especially love to play the acoustic parts on guitar.

Because, like I say, it dosn't feel like it goes anywhere. It sounds, in mind, like he got that lovely intro, stuck it onto a heavy section, then stuck another acoustic section on the end that isn't all that exciting overall, and repeats for too long, and nothing much happens in it. That said, I like about half of the song, overall I just feel it has structural problems. To each their own, I guess. |

ok i understand what your saying and i respect your opinion and all but i just disagree. |

123 man. At the moment, it's my favourite on BWP. I love the guitar layering aswell, as well as the clean guitar at the end. I don't really pay attention to Mikael's voice in the song, I just go with the music. |
I think Dirge For November is one of the best songs on BWP, although they're basically all good. The acoustic intro and then when it goes into that riff with the lead over it, thats so amazing, sure, the heavy part isn't as good as that part, but its damn hard to match that, you know what I'm saying. Good stuff, Opeth, either way :smoke:

The acoustic intro and first metal riff are cool, but after that it's kind of bleh. Same with The Drapery Falls, the beginning is great, and there are good parts throughout, but some of the middle just doesn't really do much. Like the deadly badgers part. |
I agree with you on Dirge for November, but The Drapery Falls owns the Hell out of it.
|
I think The Drapery Falls is the best song on the CD.
I realized why Opeth got a permanent keyboardist for Ghost Reveries. After having Steven Wilson doing keyboards for them on BWP and especially Damnation, they got used to having them. And when they called Steven up for the GR sessions, he was busy with Deadwing, so they panicked. |

Damn you Deth... damn you. |

123, After the amazing intro, the rest isn't anything special. NP: Godhead's Lament (This song has a badass solo!) |
123, After the amazing intro, the rest isn't anything special.
NP: Godhead's Lament (This song has a badass solo!)
All Opeth solos are awsomely melodic, rather than just being there more of a show off of talent, they fit in and add a lot to the song. |
Lol, i thought it was Mick-Al Ak-er-felt.
Me too.
Master's Apprentice is probably my favorite song from Opeth. |
123, After the amazing intro, the rest isn't anything special.
NP: Godhead's Lament (This song has a badass solo!)
Lies! The growls in The Drapery Falls, along with the melodies inbetween are some of the best on BWP! They lyrics are really tight to. |

Agreed, after Dirge, it's my favourite on BWP. It is incredibly fun to play on guitar. I love his growls althroughout the song and it never really tires, though the last growling section go's on a bit too long IMO. |
I love it when he says "Never Again" then it just goes into the acoustic part... thats great.
Off topic, but... is anybody else bugged by the bonus tracks on the reissues of the older albums? After the last notes of the albums fade out, and everything is at peace (IE Orchid) These horrid, out of place, bonus tracks fly in... their decent songs, but they just reck it... |
I hate The Drapery Falls. I don't know why.
I rather liked Still Day Beneath The Sun, one of the bonus tracks on BWP...I haven't heard any others though, besides Eternal Soul Torture. |
